What a fantastic 5.5-mile (8.8 km) paddle on the Great Stour in Kent. This out-and-back paddle took in some of the medieval city of Canterbury and some beautiful countryside. As seen in the video, this paddle is not for the faint-hearted or novice paddlers, as the Stour is very fast-flowing at some points in this area of Kent.
The River Stour is the second-longest river in Kent. It originates as the Great Stour in Lenham and flows towards and through Canterbury and then on towards the sea at Pegwell Bay. There is a Right of Navigation on the river from Canterbury to the sea. After two weirs above Fordwich, the river becomes tidal.

Lush green banks and reed beds line the most part of the river from source to sea. With pretty converted mill buildings, ancient bridges, and sites such as the historic city of Canterbury to paddle through, it's an incredible place to paddle. No licence is required.
There seems to be much confusion whether the public have rights of access to the River Stour in Canterbury. There is a right of navigation on the Kentish River Stour to Canterbury. However, it is presently navigable only from the sea at Pegwell Bay to Fordwich. There are weirs a short distance above Fordwich Bridge. It may be possible to canoe from Canterbury to Fordwich, but there is no official access or portage over the weirs. This launch point is listed on the River Stour route map on the Go-Paddling website. I certainly would not deliberately walk or paddle through someone else's land. In my defence, I am waiting for YAG laser surgery as I am suffering from posterior subcapsular cataracts, which are affecting my reading vision. It has also reduced my vision in bright light, so if there were signs on route I would be unlikely to be able to read them clearly. Likewise, I am always considerate and do not harm man or beast. I have commented on the Go-Paddling River Stour in Kent map page, advising people to not paddle upstream of Fordwich or launch from Tonford Lane. I have also messaged Go-Paddling to report this launch point.

Thank you. Yes, I flew upstream with the current, but it was really hard work paddling back (downstream) 😉 Hopefully, the next trip out will be on the River Rother to Bodiam Castle after half-term.

Great video David. I have not long retired and kayaking is my new passion. Your videos have helped me get to know where to kayak as I'm based in Maidstone. I am looking forward to paddling the Stour, after watching your video. My wife is from Sturry, just up from Fordwich, and we joke about how to pronounce the name Stour. She pronounces as in Flour, whereas I'm Stoor.

Cheers, Mark. Seeing Canterbury from the river perspective was wonderful. Although the Stour is not tidal above Fordwich, the downstream current and fighting my way through Pistia (water cabbages) and reeds was challenging yet fun. 👍
Looks like amazing route, I remember going to Canterbury years ago and seeing the river running through the historic town. Will bear in mind your advice about not paddling through Canterbury during peak periods (school holidays)
Looks stunning.. Did I hear you say you can fit an Itiwit kayak skeg to the Ottowa?? Some of the waterways where I am are very shallow & you might have answered my thought process.

I always carry the 8" Ottawa skeg and a spare 3.5" Itiwit skeg as well. In shallow calm water, I have used the 3.5" skeg on my Bluewave Glider, Story Ranger, and Aquatec Ottawa Pro. I also cut a cheap eBay 9" skeg down to 5".
Great work David , thanks for sharing this journey. I’ve been considering this paddle myself, but was uncertain about paddling through the city. I couldn’t find any definitive answer as to whether it was aloud or even possible. This is my next paddle then . 👍

Well I'm glad I watched your video David. It seems the only way I can view this route. I turned up this morning 24/05 to launch and no sooner had I got the kayak unloaded, I was approached by I guy taking water samples and was told under no circumstances was I to enter water as it's private and I could be fined and he'd called a bayliffe to come along. Oh well best find another spot . Gutted though as I'd been waiting all week to get up here.
