Follow a complete beginner through all the highs and lows of owning a classic MG!
In 2017 I took the plunge and bought Margo the MG Midget! She is a 1972, 1275cc RWA Mark 3 with only 10,000 miles on a refurbished engine.
I have always loved cars, but didn't know my bum from my bumper with literally no mechanical knowledge!
So, seeing as though I work in TV, and have a garage where I attempt all her work, I thought I would film all my antics.
You lovely lot get to watch me attempt all the repairs, go for drives, head to classic car meets and generally be silly.
If you enjoy a bit of a light-hearted mechanical madness, then feel free to hit subscribe!

How to Bleed MG Midget Clutch
zhlédnutí 8KPřed rokem
So, it's the job that everyone who owns a midget fears..... How to bleed your mg midget clutch! This has been quite a pig to be honest, however it has been made SO much easier using Peter Mays Remote Bleed kit that meant I could do everything from Margos engine bay! Thank goodness. This job however, documents it's not always so easy using an easybleed kit, and that sometimes old school methods ...
How to Change MG Midget Clutch Slave Cylinder

Ever wondered how to change the Clutch Slave Cylinder on an MG Midget? - look no further. It's the job everyone hates, changing over the clutch slave, and bleeding it. Access is hard, and it seems to be hit and miss too. I have made 2x alterations during the fitment of the clutch slave. One is notching out the top bolt hole to allow installation to be easier. The second is using a Peter May rem...

Best MG video I’ve seen so far.
Present. And erect. lol
Just pull the valve cover off, start the engine, and adjust the tappets while the engine is running.
Um..... you can do that??
I have owned 2 Midgets that I purchased both when they were brand new, right off the showroom floor. I liked the mustor color so much that I chose that color for each 🚗. My first MG-MIDGET was a 1972 model with Chrome bumpers. Later after selling that car and wishing I hadn't, I purchased my second Midget, but by then it had those ugly rubber bumpers. The second Midget, also a mustor color, was a 1976 model. I know how emotional it is when you identify with your car. My next car was a "British Green" Triumph Spitfire. However, I got married and my wife and I started our family. We had 6 children, three sons and three daughters, so the two-seater 🚗 were not an option for us.
They're not just lumps of metal are they it's weird how they get under your skin!
Had a 66 midget, a guy in Canton OH made door hinges and hand formed rocker paanels.
Those sort of people are rare!
Do you know how much the Keith minis are worth?
Mine was about 6 and a half grand I think !
@@AndysMGAdventures Thanks, we might sell our one which we’ve had for 14 years so wanted to ask a reasonable price for it.
I had a 1973 ... I put a Toyota starlet 5 speed gearbox, coby exhaust and custom air box. It was so cool... I blew up driveshaft. Fixed that and it was possibly the coolest car I’ve ever driven. Slide round corners... and heaps of power. Ohhh reminisce... now I have 4 kids (under 6) and a Mitsubishi people mover 😏
There will be another chance when they're a bit older my friend. Always always always. Cars are family too
Thank you for your videos, always informative and fun. However I do not understand this one. The moment the car is with front wheels on the ramps, and you jack it up at the rear, it would slide off the ramps, because the handbrake is only on the rear wheels, at least mine does...?
The ramps are notched so the wheel sits snugly inside each little cut out . Hence no rolling back off them!
Andy, why is there no further videos of the mini
She hasn't needed any work. So not sure what to film!
great video very useful
My bonnet spring and locking mechanism unwind constantly with the vibration of the running engine. About once a month or so, I screw the lock up to 5cm from the underside of the bonnet. It's about a 30 second job and keeps stuff where it ought to be.
Why do you have to treat this like a big joke. It doesn’t need you to behave like an idiot.
Well when life throws you all sorts of curveballs, it's nice to be silly once in a while. Plenty of other videos out there my friend for you if you want something serious. 👍🏻
@@AndysMGAdventures you know, I’d like to apologise. I’ve been watching your videos and you have a unique way of explaining things very clearly. I’ve learnt a lot about the car and also to not be so judgmental. Please accept my apology. Regards. Steve w
@@stevewoodbridge5648 all water under the bridge matey, no problem at all. Best of luck with jobs on your motor!
This is a really good video man I just did this on my recently past grandfathers 1970 midget and sm I did differently if you ever have to do the slave again there’s just barely enough room to reach your hand up and around the trans and that frame to get that top bolt in without the notch definitely a little bit more tricky but you can do it now I just have to struggle bleeding it wish me luck
I don't miss doing this job !
Does anyone know where I can buy it?
Nice presentation. Yours is the first one I've come across that actually showed where to place the stands and at what mounting point, vs just telling you where they go.
Video ruined by awful music! 😮
Ah well it was a first go at a car show apologies
hi do you know where the choke cable comes out to in the engine bay? ta
great video, can I just add having done quite a few of these, on occasion, the pressure in the line, whether pumping the pedal , Eezibleed or whatever, if the bleed nipple is not open enough the piston in the slave cylinder can move and air can stay in the cylinder, clamping the pushrod so it doesn't move usually cures this.
Great video. I am about to buy my first, mk3 67. It needs a bit work, and I am totally knew to this, no experience handling cars more than driving them. Would you please share some tips I ought to know? The very basics, tools, places to order possible parts, parts (in the car) to pay extra attention to and learn its name/meaning. Thanks.
Congrats on the purchase ! Whereabouts are you based?
@@AndysMGAdventures Thanks. I am based in Sweden!
Hmmm I don't know Sweden! I buy parts off moss europe, and demon tweeks. So sorry !!!
Hi Andy, I just bought a bargain priced 1971 Midget, basically an older restoration in good condition just in need of a little fettling. This video is going to help me do my first mechanical job, so thank you.
Congrats James! Excellent year I must say. Enjoy. I miss mine every day
@AndysMGAdventures Luckily I have room for a practical classic as well (a 1982 Visa) for family duties so can also run a Midget for 1-2-1 times. How are you getting on with that Mini?
@JamieMcAlley ah she's great now we've rebuilt the gearbox and she's had a few bits done! Enjoy the midget mate!
Rewatching, Andy, finally have everything lined up including the good weather, new rad, hoses, extra tall jack stands.
I have had that new radiator for over a year, lol, what a lazy slacker I am.
THANKS Andy good job
Where do you get the vacuum hoses?
Pretty sure I ordered them from demon tweeks
@AndysMGAdventures where is this located at? I live in Texas USA
Just found your channel, recently purchased a Midget, I'm glad you got a new four wheeled friend.
MG meets are always usually good. Spoilt though by a few who can't rely on the car to get them there they trailer them Instead...😢
This one was super!
Looking at a supposedly spotless 1980 black one. £15000 so not cheap. Any advice there? Low mileage good or bad? Paul
15 grand ?for real? Its not the Richard Hammond one is it ???
Leak?
Ha. OK. I was always told mechanically they're easy to work on. So bodywork is key. Look for ripples, signs of rust in arches, pillars, water runs around the bonnet and boot. 15 grand for the 1500 engine seems a lot to me. it's more the provenance of it being Hammonds. Having been in both, I still prefer the pull of the 1275
Thanks Andy. What is a water run please? P
Just look in the seams of the boot lid where the hinges go. There's a bit of rubber that goes round it. Look in that recess, common places for rust all round the boot aperture
Andy! So glad I found you again! I can't believe it's been so long. Hope the families good my friend.
Good year to be born, it’s my 40th tomorrow.
A fellow 84er enjoy tomorrow!
Dash pot oil specified by SU is SAE 20 Which equates to auto transmission fluid
Hello Andy, the rear GB badge on Margo, from were did you get it and how did you fix it on please Ps please buy another, kids grow up lol . Then we can have a new series for us late comers. Fantastic content mate Ta Anthony
Haha I wish I could have both the mini and the midget! The jack flag was on the car already annoyingly, I believe she was riveted on . But guessing!
Fantastic vlogs love em, how did you fix your replacement poppers on please, do you have a blog on them, cheers Anthony
Hey Anthony ! I'm afraid I didn't do a video. I just ordered a new Tenex fastner and threaded it on really!
Hi Andy After hearing your comment about not using braided fuel pipes, which i had purchased via MGOC Called them and they confirmed the braided fuel pipes they supply are in excess of the E10 requirement and have been for 10+ years as many country's worldwide have had the fuel for a long time. So I thought i would let you know. Have just finished fitting mine when looking at your video for clues of the routing of the fuel and brake pipes under car or in transmission tunel??? Can you advise??? Great videos Mark
Hmmm. Sadly I no longer have Margo. No idea where she is anymore which sucks. That said. I was told they could be e10 compliant BUT it's still hard to spot cracks and leak sources... so not sure really. They do look dang cool though !
Thanks, very informative. Paused it and ordered the Moss catalog. Didn't know you could get hard copy free. Thanks
Good work that man!
Andy, did you ever manage to resolve the problem with the clutch only just disengaging and at the bottom of its travel? I have a similar issue with a Mk4 Spite (1968) where I've already replaced both master and slave cylinders, which has been suitably bled. Perhaps a full change of clutch and thrust bearings may be needed.
you mean the "top"?
English quality
I wouldn't let you sit on MY car!
install a "roll-cage"
look for oil leaks
Hi buddy, need help with my 75 midget, do you have a contact for Dave please, or anyone who can help ad can't find nobody local to me or even information on were to find help. Cheers. Ant
Did you have to cut the anti roll bar bushes? And what with?
Andy, how did one mount the go pro on the rear of the midget? I'd like to mount it somehow to record from behind the driver like you have
I think I put a go pro suction mount on the bootlid.... or I wedge a tripod cleverly behind the seats
Clutch fluid ? Huh I’m going to have to look for that on my 75 midget never heard of that
Hi Andy, got my 1st ever 1975 midget, were do I find the switch to spray water onto windscreen please, going to check out your other vfogs nice one
Should be a little pull down lever mid right of the main dashboard. But some are wired differently. Hopefully someone wirh a 1500 can help in case the dash is different !
Looks fab except I have the flat black originals with flat silver fleck on top of ribs & on my 76 mg midget special edition the wheels silver matches the "T" special edition strips on car sides
Sounds like a beaut !
what is the chimney looking thing at the side off the radiator
Thanks, very helpful.
Cheers doug!
Great demonstration.
Cheers buddy!
I wish I had kept my mrk 2 midget, one point to stop the car being stolen install a petrol cut off valve in the boot. When you leave the car for a period just action the valve. The thief will not go very long distance !!!!
Great idea 💡
I just brought home a 76 Midget that hasn't run in years. The last owner said he accidently added gasoline to the dashpot to "prime" the carb!! Should I take the top of the dashpot off to clean and refill with oil?
I'll let someone else reply as I don't want to say the wrong thing
