By popular request - I had a go at adjusting my 1275cc 4 cylinder A Series Tappets on my MG Midget. There are several ways you can do this:
- Turn the crankshaft
- Turn the fan belt and dynamo
- Jack a wheel up and turn in gear.
OR - Do what I did - push and pull the car! But only after a few other goes!
Its been quite an interesting one this. But i have to say, really rather enjoyable!
Next video will be the competition winner reveal!
Big hugs
Andy

Hi Andy, I just bought a bargain priced 1971 Midget, basically an older restoration in good condition just in need of a little fettling. This video is going to help me do my first mechanical job, so thank you.
Congrats James! Excellent year I must say. Enjoy. I miss mine every day
@AndysMGAdventures Luckily I have room for a practical classic as well (a 1982 Visa) for family duties so can also run a Midget for 1-2-1 times. How are you getting on with that Mini?
@JamieMcAlley ah she's great now we've rebuilt the gearbox and she's had a few bits done! Enjoy the midget mate!
Outstanding video and presentation.
Good to see your nice clean oily bits. Good job. Mind you, hitting the rocker cover with a claw hammer? Naughty man!. Get yourself an engineer's mallet. Leather one end and copper the other, much less destructive. or a wooden block will do. (I'm getting off me soap box now, TTFN).
I know I know ! Bloody builders nicked my mallet. I was as gentle as I could be !
Thank you for the show got to do mine at sometime.😊
Yeah I was a bit nervous. But it's relatively straightforward!
I use a remount starter switch to bump the engine over. No worries on moving the car. Great video!
Well now you're just showing off 🤣🤣🤣 cheers mate!
@@AndysMGAdventures Hahaha I have been collecting tool for years. I am buying a 73 Midget and looks just like yours but the steering wheel is on the wrong side! LOL
@@GO_OutDoors it can be margos bizzarrroooo. Nice work!
Andy, just got me MG and will be hitting your channel too often. You make lovin fun, lovin MG Fun that is,Roberto in indy, yes home of the indy 500
Ccchhheeerrrrssss
Haha love this! I'm a fan of yours already!
I turn the engine over by placing a socket over the dynamo/alternator nut and placing pressure on the top of the fan belt with my hand, then turn the engine with the spanner/socket on said dynamo or alternator nut.. It works a treat and I do remove the spark plugs as you did, it does help.
Oooooooo that's cool!
Just jack up a single rear wheel, throw it in 4th, and turn that wheel by hand.
Like it says in the owners manual.
Marvellous.
Thanks.
Nay problem sir
Nice video Andy! just a friendly observation here, it's good practice to always use the ring end of a combo spanner where possible and I would nip up those locknuts tiger than you showed. On the other hand the nuts on the rocker cover need a gentle touch, otherwise the tin cover deforms.
tighter no tigers were hurt in this comment
Hahaha . Nice work Tim and top work work on the tips with the tiger !
The rocker arms and components look brand new. Sounds great too. Thanks for the info, never heard of the rule of 9! So adjust 1, compressed 8 (1 + 8 = 9). adjust 2, compress 7? 3+6, 4+5, 5+4, 6+3, 7+2, 8+1 where adjusting is the first number, compressed is the second number?
Those numbers are bang on pal! Yup yup
Hey just jack up one rear wheel, throw it in 4th, and turn the wheel to turn the crank.
Not a bad shout!!!
Should explain what made you decide the valves needed to require adjusting?
She was getting noisy under acceleration and I hadn't done it since owning the car !
How about adjust the air mixture on the carbs?
Good idea that !
Did you convert the engine to run on modern unleaded petrol (gasoline)?
I didn't but the owner before me did. Unleaded head on a reconditioned engine. Works a charm. Am chasing the hoses though
@@AndysMGAdventures Thanks. My brother and I owned a 1973 Midget in the early 80's in the States! Too much rust to fix so we sold it. But Fun Cars!
@@frfalbo yeah tell me about it and your stateside. Imagine a wet windy Bristol in the UK, she's looking like a cheese grater!!
Just pull the valve cover off, start the engine, and adjust the tappets while the engine is running.
Um..... you can do that??
i like you, you're look a nerdy tony stark
Hahahaha I'll take that as a compliment
That's my weekend job then.
Good luck sir!
Never mind the sloppy attire sir, why is that Bibendum not illuminated!
Tony ! If only he did have a light !!!! And top marks for saying it right. I give you 12 extra points
@@AndysMGAdventures Drill a hole in the botty area and fit a 12v bulb and holder wired to a small plug type transformer
Lol. You never know what you'll "learn" from my videos 🤣
Ha.... maybe I will !
Mallet not a hammer old boy
I cut out the bit of me hitting it with a sponge between the Hammer and the cover. My mallet was taken by our builders haha 😄 hence a gentle tap . But thank you muchly I knew I was being naughty
I will let you off this time lol
@@milkythemidget4774 hahaha phew
