Bleeding Edge Interviews: Supa Dave Talks To The One & Only Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal!
This is best seen and heard in the rotten shed
I think the rush comparison is from the Rickenbacker bass which he traditionally uses and that high vocal
This song is too short! It was already severely edited. Much like some people want to hear the 17+ minute version of the Beatles' "Dig It", I want to hear the full version of this song! How much worse can it be?
I wonder what the meaning of the song and video is 🤔, end of times? NWO? Lizard people?
Bent Knee is just awesome! They're going on tour later this year! Go see them live. They're even better live.
It's all polymeters in standard 4/4 signature. Once your brain begins to hear the elusive 4/4 pulse, the groove suddenly sounds like it weighs 10 tons.
That’s the exact reaction he was looking for.
Check out the later live version of this one... flows a bit more. A touch less busy. Fiery Gun Hand!! Give that a go. I sang a few tunes live with a great cover band called Jibber & Twitch and memorizing the lyrics and hitting the marks was a hellava challenge. ;)
Also, Roger's 'Amused To Death' is a masterpiece. Head & shoulders above all his other releases.
You should give the 'On An Island' record a listen. You may find some tracks very enjoyable.
Oh he's been a busy lad. But a lot of his music was merely internal, and with family since his last solo album. Yes, this new one hits the spot, and in fact another track dropped today which features his daughter Romany, who is a spitting image of a young David, and seems to have inherited some of that brilliance as well. Watch these two, then watch the explainer for the new track: czcams.com/video/dGdEe8yp2TI/video.html ( David Gilmour with Romany Gilmour - Yes, I Have Ghosts (Von Trapped Series) ) czcams.com/video/T_gQ_D5yhAE/video.html ( David Gilmour and Romany Gilmour - Kokineli ) Can you imagine having David as your dad and music teacher? Then watch him beaming with pride as she knocks out an incredible vocal in essentially one take: czcams.com/video/hCQcKUtg9kc/video.html ( David Gilmour - Between Two Points (Explainer) )
My old roommate hated this album, he eventually hid it on me took me months to find it. You either love them or hate them. I think if people hate them their just musically ignorant. This it a top 10 all time record imo.
Im glad I saw them 3 times, they are one of the greatest bands ever, first time I heard them I hated it, but then my mind woke up to greatness on the level with The Beatles
And to really blow your mind, he also sings opera so there’s that too🙃
I love Cardiacs, the Archive collection was my introduction to the band and I quickly fell in love with this song. I learned to play it on drums and played along nearly every day for a year straight. Tim's music is a continuous inspiration to me.
My favorite band. Me Train Running Low On Soul Coal, is the perfect XTC song for you. Includes a noisy guitar sólo.
This Album change all my music life..... Since then incredible fan of Mike Patton and all his Projects. From Fantomas, Peeping and Mondo Cane to mention a few. this Sunday 16.June .2024 i will See Mr. Bunge live again......
Humilitive by meshuggah next, please
This track is undoubtedly long for what it is, but that reinforces its hypnotic aspect, so in the end it serves its purpose. The hi-hat was probably deliberately under-mixed because remember that in the very early 80s it was popular in post-punk and new wave, especially in the UK, to favour martial drums and toms over cymbals, especially since Peter Gabriel had released his third album in 1980 in which he expressly asked that cymbals be banned during recording sessions. This attitude was adopted at the time by bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Psychedelic Furs, Public Image Ltd, Killing Joke.... Just as you'd be hard-pressed to find guitar or keyboard solos with XTC - not really their style! 😉
i dunno.. expecting deeper lyrics out of squeeze me macaroni is like expecting gospel from looney tunes :D
Fun fact about the cardiacs fan base, they managed to throw Rick Beato into a rage trying to get him to listen to them lol. Apparently he threw a fit and asked people to please stop contacting him about them lol. Which I think is goddamn hilarious.
I didn't know that, hilarious!
It should be worth noting that while Cardiacs got most of its audience from the Prog (and to some extent punk scenes), they always rejected both labels, with Tim prefering "psychedelic pop". End of the day really the only genre they belong to is their own one.
another interesting fact to their lyrics: as patton said that most of the things he sings about are mostly a joke to confuse people and see their stupid faces when he comes up with lyrics like these, he said that to him lyrics are just a way to make the music around them sound more interesting and on point. like they´re just a way to put the instruments and the picture that they create with the whole song to put on the front. thats so unusual when u think of it, that most composers and songwriters create lyrics with deep meaning to give this whole song an forced vibe, but just choosing words just to make the whole arrangement sound more interesting and for certain words to fit an specific melody or signature shift and make them more present with that is just so overwhelming to think of. sorry if that´s hard to read or even sound ridiculous, i´m baked
Not paying alot of attention to David Gilmour for the last 15 years has you missing a master evolution.
Ya know... My girlfriend had me listen to some stuff from On An Island and it was much better than I had expected. No offense to Gilmour - who is one of favorite guitarists - but I wasn't ever wowed by About Face or The Division Bell, so I lost track of his work. And, yeah...I think I'm going to do some catching up. I definitely missed some really good stuff.
@@BleedingEdgeProg Understandable. The Division Bell album, which was overproduced, comes to life live as does David. Every one of his songs are much better live. I suggest watching the Pulse Concert 1994, Live at Gdansk 2006?, Live at Pompeii and Remember that Night to really see how he has evolved.
@@BleedingEdgeProg Also the best Gilmour solo album is David Gilmour-David Gilmour
Amorphis is prog only in their discography evolution. They are melodic death metal with folk influences.
I'd agree with you from what I've heard thus far. I'm looking forward to hearing more, but I agree what I'm hearing isn't very proggy...yet. But they do seem to have a good bit of crossover appeal, based on what I see at prog concerts and in my own opinions
Missing on The Karelian Isthmus! - the pre-kalevala / kebab metal era! recommended tracks: Sign from The North side, Misery Path, Karelia+The Gathering
Nice! Thanks for the suggestions!
Neil Pearts favorite drummer was Steve Smith. Steve left Journey as a rock drummer. He studied with Freddie Gruber who eventually helped Peart, Weckl, and everybody else
I believe that, though it feels like that particular fact doesn't get as much attention as it should. I'd heard rumors about Smith for years, but never got around to following up, and when Preston pointed me towards a specific track that finally got me dislodged from my inertia. So glad he did that!
try tuonela album
Got it! Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank you so much for having me on! Was great fun talking to you about the album!
You are so welcome! It was great talking with you!
Mike Patton (lead singer) has said that a lot of times he considers his voice to just be another instrument, especially on the Bungle albums, and that the lyrical content was often just absurdism used to give his “instrument” a vehicle. So that does explain things. However he doesn’t approach all of his music like this. It seemed be specifically about this album and some other random things.
Try their song "Complicated Game" - it's quirky, but more like knife to your throat kind of quirky.
Thank you so much for the watch and the suggestion! Added it to my list!
Hi Dave. I was the nominator for Bent Knee, so thanks for giving them a listen and glad you liked it. This track is 4/4, but in triplets (notes divided into three), except for the odd burst of what I believe is standard 4/4 where the notes divide into four (I could be wrong). The main actress in the video is not the singer, Courtney Swain, though the other dinner guests are all members of the band. Some other tracks I'd recommend are Way Too Long, Being Human and Counsellor. All of which showcase Bent Knee's original sound and Courtney's dynamic vocal style. They also did a truly psychotic version of (You Are My) Sunshine.
Very cool! Thanks for all this info and the suggestions. I needed some for my next listen, so this helps a lot! I appreciate it!
Best band ever. Mic drop. Haha.
I love this reaction lol
Thanks! Nothing yet has caught me by surprise the way this track did. I joked about it, but I had a blast with it!
Man. Your opinion sucks. Then i saw you had pops in your place. I get it. Your what the kids call base
There is definitely a lot of humor to them. Sleep is Wrong, Donkey Headed Advesary, or even Tonight We're Gonna Party Like It's 1997 (which may also be more...conventionally rock?). As someone mentioned, they don't really stick to one style. Sometimes not even in a single song.
Definitely sounds like a band I want to further explore. And will! Thanks for the suggestions!
I would also call Chrome progressive punk with Alien Soundtracks and Half Machine Lip Moves, though their approach was more of a brain damaged and hallucinogenic Hawkwind//Can meets Stooges variety
Great description!
Ok I’m sold, I want Posty to drop an acoustic album where he covers Popular songs like this
First song you play isn’t the original album version. The original sounds a lot different to either of these.
Yeah. I found that out later. I swear the video was labeled as being from the album. That's the big risk with listening to these fresh: More than once it's turned out I had the wrong video. LOL
Listening to this song as an introduction to Mr. Bungle is like listening to "She Loves You" as an intro to the Beatles.
Fair enough. I'll take that to mean that really early Beatles isn't anything like what they grew into. The more I hear from fans of Mr. Bungle, the more that becomes apparent to me! I'll find my way there!
@@BleedingEdgeProg - I highly recommend “Carry Stress in the Jaw” from the Disco Volante album. Disco Volante is by far their most experimental album, and their follow-up, California, is a little more mainstream. Their most recent release, The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, is basically a re-recording of their early demos from high school… pretty straightforward thrash metal. Anyway, each album is completely different from the others. Disco Volante is, in my opinion, their magnum opus. Loving the channel so far!
Monty Python meets King Crimson meets Blondie 🤣🤘
Heh! Love that description!
Dave, you’re the best! Loved chatting with you - thanks so much again ❤️
Thank you so much! Likewise! You guys were great! Got me to go back and listen to my collection of Cars music, too!
If you want more variation in one of their tracks you could try “I”, but that’s a whole other animal. -Bending is something they definitely do.
I'll have to dig that one up! Thanks for the suggestion!
SiX By SiX is the best group!!! Love what Robert has created with his mates - very cool mates from excellent backgrounds as well - I was a big SAGA fan myself. Been a Robert Berry fan since 1975 in the days of HUSH, one of his many amazing bands.
Indeed! I've really been enjoying their stuff, and in no small part because Ian gets to cut loose a bit! Been a huge fan of his from back in the day, and he's truly an underappreciated guitarist!
Dude... You are my age. This shit was made when we were still in highschool. What were you doing back then? Lol
LMAO! I don't know how this one got past me. I think I didn't have the most adventurous friends, musically speaking, so if I didn't find it myself, it got past me. One would think that working college radio someone might have introduced me to them, right? On the other hand, I was there to hear the first album of Cannibal Corpse... I was not ready for that!
Think about the person watching you. You pause the music....okaaaaaaay.... Must be something important that you have to say we assume. You proceed to talk for a minute about how it's hard To understand someone's screaming that you personally don't do well with that as though you and everyone else. Don't find it difficult to understand what someone saying when they're screaming. Is that something that you really feel? You need to pause the music to take a minute. To explain someone that is hard to hear. What's someone's actually saying when they're screaming?
Duh Some things are just understood without you having to clarify them, Bud.
I hear ya. I generally like to pause somewhere midway through whatever song I'm listening to, just to provide a bit of commentary at the moment. Not every bit of commentary is a gem, I'll admit.
4 minutes into the song, and you haven't paused at all. Holy c***, we can't have that now, can we?
My intro to this song was the Primus cover from their Miscellaneous Debris EP. That was a much better version than this original version. Not much different in construction, but the Primus version does use modern production methods (even for the early 90s). This sounds like they recorded it themselves straight to tape on a boombox
I'll have to hunt that down. Not a huge fan of Primus...and I'll admit I didn't really get past their most well-known stuff at the time, but I might have to correct that.
"Senses working overtime" is 80s music at it's best. Great band! And try "Neon Shuffle" and "Sargent Rock", oh yeah and "Science Friction"
Thank you for the suggestions! I got tied up with other things and life in general, so these are where I'll be headed when I get back to reactions!
Oh yes there is much much much more for you discover with them . Dig deeper and you will be rewarded many times over !
