  • Working my way through Cardiacs' back catalog, this time with a suggestion by @loonylotto4363 & @unk4140. I might think I've begun to figure out the quirky and eclectic nature of this band, but I'm wrong! They surprise me again!

I love Cardiacs, the Archive collection was my introduction to the band and I quickly fell in love with this song. I learned to play it on drums and played along nearly every day for a year straight. Tim's music is a continuous inspiration to me.

On the whole tims lyrics are hard to decipher, but quite intriguing at the same time, with some themes about every day life, looking forward to more, not gonna request any because you could pick any song and it would be an interesting reaction 😂

You've probably had suggestions for it before, but I'd highly recommend Nurses Whispering Verses. There are a few (fairly different) versions of it - for someone with a prog background I'd choose the version from Sing to God - it was a more recent recording so the sound comes through with a little more intensity. It's a good example of them demonstrating their capacity for really intense music without indulging in quite as much abstract weirdness, so to me it feels a little more accessible in that way. Definitely something I'd put on a playlist!

Agreed re: the Sing To God version. it's the most polished (and the longest) version with the ambient ending.

Cardiacs managed to upset the prog crowd by being too punk at the same time as upsetting the punk crowd by not being rock n roll enough. And the music industry by forming their own label. Pretty much the full set there! No wonder they were under-appreciated.
Good tune this, although you've probably picked the worst version to play (I like the Rotten Shed version best).

LMAO! Fucking awesome, right there! Nothing better or more predictable than getting stuck in the middle like that. In fact, it's a similar way I described myself in high school: Too nerdy to fully fit into the party crowd and too much of a partier for the nerd crowd!

Check out the later live version of this one... flows a bit more. A touch less busy. Fiery Gun Hand!! Give that a go. I sang a few tunes live with a great cover band called Jibber & Twitch and memorizing the lyrics and hitting the marks was a hellava challenge. ;)

For lyrics full of strange syllable breaks such as you mention here, one day you might find *Jitterbug (junior is a)* interesting/ perplexing. If you do, one thing to remember in that song is that the lyrics were taken (to a large extent, anyway) from Mark Twain's favorite Portuguese-English phrase book, which went by the title _English as She is Spoke_ and someone has figured out was probably produced by someone who didn't know a word of English, and probably not much French, if any, who had a Portuguese-French dictionary, and an English-French dictionary. So put them together and you can make your own phrase book without such inconveniences as learning the language.
Jitterbug is a very unusual song. When he was young, he first wrote everything down (taught himself to read music by comparing a score for Quadrophenia to the record, and from then on used this as a tool), but he'd stopped doing that for most songs later on. But Jitterbug had to first be written down. Story is he woke from a dream in which the song came to him, one morning, and set to, trying to make sure it didn't just vanish in his memory. He kept at that for something like 36 straight hours, and at the end, he had Jitterbug. So it has an unusual provenance, too, and unusually, has a history of how it came into being. I haven't heard of many such songs.
If you do do it one day, I think you'll need the lyrics in front of you, if you want to not know what one earth they're talking about while listening. If you don't, you'll just hear phrases as music - as a kind of instrument, almost. It took a while for me to get some bearings in that song, but in time I kind of got it. Now I think it's beautiful. Am probably "cult-indoctrinated". Waiting for the space ship to come and collect us all on the top of the hill next week after we've paid our tithes again.
    Here's the lyrics video: czcams.com/video/KvsOwKYQGvs/video.html
(The a cappella cover by David Minnick is something you might find you enjoy sometime, too.)

"Mark Twain's favorite Portuguese-English phrase book" - Now, there's a phrase you don't hear every day! LOL
I'll add this one to my list, too. Thanks for the suggestion. If I keep it up, I might join you as "cult-indoctrinated", but hopefully I don't take so long that I miss the mother ship pickup date! :D

@@BleedingEdgeProg Oh I'm sure the Great Leader will just time travel back to fetch you if you end up a bit late to event.
Mmm ... and now that makes me think of Magma. I'll check, but have you heard of the French group Magma? (They have a song where the lyrics go something like, "In this ancient stadium we are gathered today, and today is the day we die; and to you I say Thank You"... very roughly. A bit of a twist on the whole mothership rescue theme, but that made me think of it.)
They sing in a language they made up about the legends of some interplanetary civilization. (And they came into existence to try to fill the void left by the death of John Coltrane, so there are all sorts of layers to this.)
If I recall correctly, various members of various iterations of Cardiacs all got together, caught the ferry to France, and went to watch a Magma concert quite near the time of Tim Smith's stroke and heart attack.
I'll try to think up something superstitious to say about that if I can.

@@BleedingEdgeProg the British underground was happy with prog and mixing all sorts of rock or whatever - and utterly ignored and belittled and misunderstood by the music and general press at the time, to an absurd degree. I suppose I should mention the all-dayer gig we put on where Cardiacs headlined, sold out 1200 official capacity (it was somewhat over that tbh) and had the editor of the NME stand in the middle of the gig making notes with a scowl on his face, then publish an article pretending that Cardiacs didn't exist, and reviewed all the other bands.
