They certainly don't seem to. And I have to say...from my experience, a lot of the prog artists don't actually take themselves terribly seriously, either. Their music perhaps, and it varies from individual to individual, but I hear what you're saying!

@@BleedingEdgeProg Dream Theatre and Queensrychebsure does. lol. Genesis back in the 70’s were pretty laid back and funny lyrically as was Zappa and Gentle Giant. I think the main ingredient with Bungle was the underground avant jazz scene and old movie scores which flowed in and out of the songs too that with incredibly insane lyrics… not cheesy though, the Bungle Copycats only have them as an influence. They’re missing the ingredients. I think 100 years from now Disco Volante will be hailed as one of the greatest albums ever made

Fair enough. I'll take that to mean that really early Beatles isn't anything like what they grew into. The more I hear from fans of Mr. Bungle, the more that becomes apparent to me! I'll find my way there!

@@BleedingEdgeProg - I highly recommend “Carry Stress in the Jaw” from the Disco Volante album. Disco Volante is by far their most experimental album, and their follow-up, California, is a little more mainstream. Their most recent release, The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, is basically a re-recording of their early demos from high school… pretty straightforward thrash metal.
Anyway, each album is completely different from the others. Disco Volante is, in my opinion, their magnum opus.
      Loving the channel so far!

What's crazy is they weren't that damn far from 12. The were high schoolers. Which is wild if you look at the sheer musicality and complexity. It's easy for a lot of people to miss because they are thrown off by the juvenile craziness of he lyrics and skits. But they switch time signatures all the time. Blend genres in super unique ways. You caught it but I've seen a lot of people get thrown off and miss it.

That's a really good point! I had lost track in my head of what their ages must have been at this point. Just super crazy, and even if presented as kinda juvenile, the creativity and musicality on display are just mind-blowing.

Mike Patton (lead singer) has said that a lot of times he considers his voice to just be another instrument, especially on the Bungle albums, and that the lyrical content was often just absurdism used to give his “instrument” a vehicle. So that does explain things. However he doesn’t approach all of his music like this. It seemed be specifically about this album and some other random things.

Their first album was actually *The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny* - pretty much an extreme/ thrash metal album (with a few covers). The CZcams videos of their recent tour were mainly of performances of songs from that album (which they only properly released lately).
Their music varies quite a lot from album to album, so your ship has just bumped into the tip of the iceberg here. Might be an idea to try the one with the scorpion tale on it if you're still waiting for Stub a Dub to make it to the top of the list. Might be an idea to try it later, either here or somewhere else.
(Paint your fingernails, put some Mr Bungle on, drive up past some kids, and slow down in a menacing, evil kind of way, make a beckoning gesture with your crooked fingers, say in a villainous voice, "Come here, little boy", and then laugh a mean laugh when they scream and run away.
Later, learn a bit of humility when the cops come round, because the kids were Scouts who know to take your number plate. So now the joke is on you. I had a friend who did this, once. His girlfriend painted his nails, and this gave him a bad idea on the way home. He was a nice bloke, I swear.)

another interesting fact to their lyrics: as patton said that most of the things he sings about are mostly a joke to confuse people and see their stupid faces when he comes up with lyrics like these, he said that to him lyrics are just a way to make the music around them sound more interesting and on point. like they´re just a way to put the instruments and the picture that they create with the whole song to put on the front. thats so unusual when u think of it, that most composers and songwriters create lyrics with deep meaning to give this whole song an forced vibe, but just choosing words just to make the whole arrangement sound more interesting and for certain words to fit an specific melody or signature shift and make them more present with that is just so overwhelming to think of.
sorry if that´s hard to read or even sound ridiculous, i´m baked

I think you’re both spot on in someways… But entirely too focused on the lyrics. I think you have to understand that, knowing the words to the song is kind of an inside joke… You’re just really honestly supposed to enjoy the cadence and the instruments I would argue. This is truly an epic masterpiece that was way ahead of its time.
Nobody was singing “we came to potty”… the lyrics didn’t come with cassette tapes, generally, and the Internet didn’t exist to look it up. Most people were winging it. There was a lot of mumbling going on back then lol

    • @BleedingEdgeProg
      @BleedingEdgeProg  Před 2 měsíci +1

Fair enough. I do normally try to take all of a song in for the full experience, but that's a valid point that sometimes it's better to just focus on the music. If the composition is good enough, I can ignore sub-par lyrics.

OK, yes, here they are, making a parody of the holy consumerism, sex&food and that`s the whole idea and the way I perceive it. And believe it or not, I don`t mind it at all, `cause the music that revolves around it is just so amazing, don`t you think so?😎
Even the humor of a 12-year old, as you put it, is somehow grotesque in a way and serves to illustrate the absurdity of ill kind of rising up, but also transcends it in a clever, yet korky way. So when you look it that way, they`ve just showed you another alley of their virtuosity and genius spirit. It`s also a cynical criticism on a count of modern living, and I liked it so.😆😄😊😝
Man, you gotta love their wits...😎But I`ll tell you this. Right... Ok, so far we`ve heard them play ska & circus music , with some thrash metal...Your words.😉 and that was in the previous song, Carousel. Here, we hear them play funk, rap, soul (wow!) and even Brazilian samba! (`chicka chicka boo` part)...That`s wild!🙃🙂So, where should we go next, what else do you expect from them to play? Jazz maybe... ?😎Suuuure, no problemo!😀We got it in this candy shop.😉🙂 Just to keep it on this debut album for hearing some `jazz maybe`, how about the first song on the album, "Quote Unquote", with the alternative name "Travolta" (which lead them into some legal right issues, so they kept the first title...). That would be very interesting to react to. The lyrics are on some other level in here.... On the trail of jazz is also "Love is a Fist" with some rough lyrics too, so you might consider this one also. However, if you want to keep it `classical` in a way of the arrangements and sound which, by no mean can be said about the lyrics of that song too, I suggest a reply on the infamous "The Girls of Porn". If you can imagine a blend of Michael Jackson, George Michael in one hand, and the funk-metal like "Extreme" or "Living Colour" in another, then this is a funky-sassy thing to react to. Absolutely nothing too strange or over the top except - the lyrics themselves! So, there you go!😀
And remember... The journey just started. You ain`t heard nothing yet! 😃Roughly, if you say that this debut album is for a demented 12-year olds, you`d probably be simultaneously right and wrong, Ok?... It groovy, funky, ska-ish and mostly circus fun... But, the story changes with their second album "Disco Volante" where some serious, deranged art starts to kick in.😉 Be warned..🙂Not for everyone`s ears, but I actually think you`ll dig it more than these two songs you`ve heard so far... Things become pretty dark and weird on this second album, clowns become artistically black and white, but the THIRD ONE, "Califonia"... they just become so amazingly sweet, clowns masked almost as a regular people, shiny, colorful.. just almost!...and knowing the `retro` nature of it - surf rock, soft music, world music and all that stuff....😀So many musical quotes of big names, The Beach Boys, Elvis, Vangelis, Herby Hancock, Yello... but Sepultura too!😃 You would`t believe it until you hear it! ... But all in time....😉Let`s just finish with this album first, do this few songs I named you, and then you`ll be ready for some serious sh..... No kidding. "Mr.Bungle are for kids...."🤣Nice one! Thank you for reacting to them so far either way. It`s much appreciated. "We are fans and we are manyyyyy...." Hahah... Thanks. Bye. C-ya!😊
