Hey, everyone!
Welcome to my (mostly) retrogaming CZcams channel! What do I do here? Primarily cover older games and systems with some occasional modern stuff. I also do detailed comparisons of old games on multiple platforms, reviews of both hardware and software, and look at some fan translations and rom hacks.
I've been gaming since the atari 2600 days and have had most systems from most manufacturers.
Note: for older systems, video is captured via emulation because it's by far the easiest way to do it. If that bothers you, this isn't the channel for you. Newer systems (Switch, PS4/5, SBCs, etc) are recorded off real hardware via HDMI capture.
I also have a channel with choptunes I make here: czcams.com/users/InglebardMusic

I wish the lifebars could be fixed on the snes version with the names inside of them.
The Korean version although written in English as Gam*boy is written in Korean as 겜보이 which is pronounced more like "gem boy" (G sound like in 'golf' rather than a J sound like in 'gem'). The Megadrive/Genesis was sold as a Samsung Super Aladin Boy. You can still find them floating around but they're rather expensive - I see a a Master System on a Korean marketplace site now in mid 2024 for ~ $200 USD.
God, look at how terrible PCE is.
I found your opinions on the music very funny. The PC Engine always has the better renditions of classic SEGA arcade tunes. On the Mega Drive they either lack speed, some channels (After Burner hello!), always lack proper stereo (the MD simply does not do stereo) and often even complete tracks (the utterly amazing Space Harrier staff roll of the PC Engine).
You are factually wrong about almost everything you just said. The missing in channels in After Burner aren't "missing," the Genesis/MD conversion is based on arcade After Burner II. In arcade After Burner II, Sega stripped the melody tracks from several versions of the songs, most notably Final Take Off. The PCE soundtrack is based on the music from the original After Burner release even though the game itself is based on AB II. The fact that you didn't know that is very suspect. The Genesis/MD has stereo. You can set a channel to play all right, all left or both sides. The PCE supports stereo with more subtelty between left and right, but also has fewer sound channels. Gen/MD has 10 between the FM (6) and PSG (4) chips, PCE has 6 total PSG channels only. The Genesis/MD didn't receive a port of the original Space Harrier until the release of the Genesis / Mega Drive Mini II a few years ago. Until then, it only ever had Space Harrier II which didn't use any music from the original Space Harrier. The port on the Gen/MD Mini II is also, of course, based partly on theoretical hardware since it includes hardware scaling similar to what would have been available at the time the MD was released in 1988 - Sega was famously originally going to include a sprite scaling chip and removed it from the design due to the physical size it added to the hardware, yield rates, and price. Again, you should have known there was no Gen?MD version of SH 1 if you were going to talk about the music "missing" from it.
@@InglebardGaming You tell me nothing I don't know. The fact that After Burner arcade does not contain the melody does not mean the song has to be like that. They just could not get it right in the mix on the machine, they ran out of ROM, no idea. All modern renditions include it, and they managed to get it sound right on the PC Engine, so thank god it is there. It has to be in there, it is the melody line demmit! Left+Right is NOT Stereo. It sounds annoying, try headphones you get nuts. A MD is better off with a mono-TV. Where a PC Engine just NEEDS a stereo TV and sounds amazing on headphones. Amigas and Mega Drives have fake stereo. Face it. Apparantly you don't know PC Engine Space Harrier, nor played it to the end. The staff roll track is asthonishing, and absent on any other version.
Arcade version had a display of 384x256 and probably far more colours, while PcEngine was around 256x224, but graphics look pixel perfects (with slightly simplified palette range) so they added some extra scrollings. Still one of the best port, considering.

I never thought a fighting game could get worse than Amiga SF1... until I saw HKM. The opponent AI and character animations are risible. Having the opponents regen their health is just cheap.
I always used to think of Axelay as a sort of Salamander 2, until the proper sequel came out of course.
Recall not buying the NeoGeo at the time due to price of console and cost of games around $200 and up but mostly because I honestly felt my Genesis & Super Nintendo had so many more AAA games from more genres that were close to, just as good and in some cases better than what were available on the AES. Again, my opinion back in the early 90’s. Sure, I may have been trying to justify not buying the AES but when I did buy what I felt was superior to my “16 bit” consoles it was the 3DO which cost more than the AES with exception of game costs
Top job dude. Its always interesting to view a conversion against the arcade. The SNES version for me is very close and at that time, near enough the arcade. Some people say its an unfair comparison, but probably were not around at the time where the term arcade perfect was used way too often.
"Nachtclub" is Dutch, so it probably is The Netherlands, Amsterdam.
Ah, thanks!
The one they call Inglebard. I was 12 years old. I went on holiday with my grandparents to give my folks a bit of a rest from my ADHD-addled self, and also because we were moving house, and it just made some sense to get me out of their way for a couple of weeks while they got it done. Anyway, in the arcades on holiday they had a Fatal Fury machine, a Super Monaco GP machine which you could get free credits out of 9 times out of 10, a Simpsons machine which all the kids used to play 4 player on, and a Streetfighter 1 machine. Having played a little SF2, I knew how to do the fireball, spinning kick and Shoryuken, but it simply wouldn't work on the arcade. I eventually figured out that just rolling the button in a quarter circle while spamming punch would throw out random fireballs & Shoryukens enough to get by. By the end of that holiday I had been able to complete the game on 1 credit. On the way home, which was only like a 2 hour drive, we stopped in a service station somewhere up the highway and I made a beeline to the game magazines but I also found a place that sold games, what what do you know? They had Streetfighter for the Amiga for like 4.99. Bargain!! The screenshots looked great, with big, clear characters, backgrounds which looked just like the arcade version, if a little plainer in the colour palette which was perfectly common with Amiga arcade ports, nothing I couldn't get over quickly. And because this was an old arcade and not particularly impressive technically even by 1987 standards, I was excited by this find. Could not wait to get it home. Home being somewhere I had never live before, remember. Never slept there before, didn't know anyone within a 5 mile radius. Drowning my sorrows with a competent port of Streetfighter was just the ticket. Then, after a short loading period, the game finally started... The game was so bad that it actually made me hate my Amiga. I never got to play Human Killing Machine, but it looks every bit as bad as Streetfighter.
This game looks garbage
In this case... it's exactly what it looks like!
I love the SNES version, even if it's not exactly as close as we remember. Because it felt close at the time! But the one thing that really bothered me is the life bars. Why not simply put the name in the life bars? I think it was a way to try and even the score with the Genesis version, which feel short in almost every area by comparison.
I played that SF1 port and HKM on my A500 Mini...that SF1 port is a real masterpiece compared to HKM...one of the most unfair games i ever played....
I'd heard this was their follow-up of sorts to street fighter... but man, what a massive downgrade! sounds about right for tiertex (yecccch!) and I thought rise of the robots was awful...
Ha, yup, as garbage as Rise of the Robots is, this is definitely worse. No easy feat!
Tiertex was such a crappy bunch of developers, they couldn't even be bothered to fix the final boss in the Amiga version 😂
They couldn't be bothered to fix the final boss... or literally anything else!
I feel like Tiertex were the guys real programmers hated. They wrote everything in higher level languages so it would be portable instead of machine code so everything ran like 2fps. Then they could easily port their crap to other machines so it could run like shit there too. The only time I can think of that I can actually appreciate this was Paul Woakes, he wrote Mercenary for the Atari ST and then wrote an ST emulator for the Amiga so the Amiga version of Mercenary is actually the ST version running in his emulator...... :P That's actually respectable in a weird way
It's amazing that the company was around until just a few years ago. They only closed up shop in 2021. Crazy, right?
Why not find a Nintendo game and critique that. From the point of view of a normal person. Pick any one and tear it a new one like it deserves.
...I have. Several times.

@@InglebardGaming you know who I am Inglebard. I never complained about this style of content before but I snapped. Teirtex are real people and they area _really_ good at programming.
@@InglebardGaming I don't see many people criticising the Game & Watch but the Tomy handhelds get it in the nuts every time. But they were actually fun. The Game & Watches were insanely simple.
I found this video really boring. I like Tiertex, I think they are a good developer who were just tasked with programming for literally every single platform and given not enough time to do so. They are legends. I had enough after just 4 minutes. I heard it all before. I don't like mud slinging when it's just this game. Yeah we all know about it already. It just feels pointlessly callous.
Who gives a shit? If you don't like this kinda content, just stop clicking the videos only to be a contrarian
@@mortenera2294 I'm airing my opinion. Why is that so confusing to you? It's not personal.
@@mortenera2294 Honestly, I clicked on it reluctantly. I already know about the old contract studio for hire from Macclesfield who are real actual people Inglebard is just dumping on from a great height to sound authentic and really passionate about games Just focus on their worst game and clutch our guts laughing and ignore anything good they ever did, those incredibly talented developers accomplished. Let alone putting out games for a rock bottom price to be enjoyed. People go on like you would go out and buy Human Killing Machine for £50 in 1989 money then cry all day because they can't get their money back. No, they just didn't get payed or generate any money and that was it.
@@mortenera2294 Play Outrun 2019 by Sims (a respected developer if you ignore the Sonic 4 mobile game (part 1). I finished Turbo Outrun 2019 on my very first attempt. It was so shallow and weak. Now play Turbo Outrun by Tiertex. It's looks a bit dinky and weird and the road is strange and doesn't curve properly but it's so intense and fun. I played it for hours. Whereas Outrun 2019 wasn't much fun really and only lasted about 10 minutes.
I'm sure the programmers were nice people but as a zx spectrum owner, tiertex sucked but did a great conversion of marble madness on the mega drive.
I never knew this existed at the time and I'm quite grateful for that. The janky kick reminded me of playing Brutal: Paws of Fury on the Mega CD and I thought that was bad. I'd say IK+ on the Spectrum looks more fun to play!
It's hard to properly describe how bad HKM is using simple human language. Maybe someone can create an interpretative dance that will convey the proper emotional firestorm that it conjures within the unfortunate gamer! Also, Brutal sucks, lol, but nowhere near as much as HKM!
Folks, there were a few things I didn't get to talk about since I shortened the gameplay footage to mercifully spare you from too much exposure to this toxic goo. Just so you know I didn't forget them, here they are: 1. You may not have noticed, but your opponent's energy bar constantly refills. Yours does not. Awesome. 2. There are no sound effects in the game. Music only and just that one track during gameplay. 3. I know that in the US some platforms got a different version of Street Fighter. The C64 for example had a terrible Tiertex (Yechhhh) version in the UK but a slightly better version in the US from Pacific Dataworks International. I've actually owned a retail copy of that (paid for and everything!) since it was new. It even has the three special moves! Maybe I'll show you that some time.
Please do, we need a chaser to wash this down.
oh boy!, the Amiga sure had some terrible games, at times I think they were trying to eat more than they could chew.
Well, the thing is this was developed by Tiertex (Yechhhhh). They were notoriously terrible at making games and did lots of awful arcade ports across multiple platforms. The Amiga did get a lot of junk, but it was really capable for when it came out and has some great stuff, too. But games from Tiertex (Yechhhhhh) though, they were in a category of awful all their own.
Wow, I didn't think you uploaded a Final Fantasy IV video! There's many other games that were ported to the WonderSwan Color, like Front Mission
Yup. I've covered a few other Wonderswan things here and there. Not much, usually just as quick mentions in other videos with short clips.
As someone who started exploring the Saturn very recently, maybe one of the most underrated consoles, so much unique game variety and plenty of technically impressive games for the system. Once I get mine fram modded so I never need to replace a battery I will really be in business lol
There's a lot of great stuff on it. It's a real shame it didn't take off here in the US, but I've had mine from almost the very beginning. I really need to either fix mine or get a Saroo or something.
Que buena comparacion! Ahí te sigo y recomiendo, si querés mira lo que hago. Saludos y éxitos.
Thanks and welcome!
No, your videos have never been terrible. I really like your channel. Anytime that I have disagreed with you has always been to debate about whatever game or console the video was about. It is never done in a disrespectful way. Sometimes it's hard to tell when the main means of conversation is text.
I actually did not like that you skipped the hardware specs of both machines. At any rate, when SF2T was released on the 3DO, it was hailed as the best defacto version to own in the home. I remember getting a chance to play it and being mesmerized by it in 1994. Then....I started noticing things about it. The lack of parallax scrolling was something that really bothered me. Now, I thought the colors, especially during a Super Finisher, were incredible. I wonder if maybe it might look much better on a CRT TV. I thought the graphics were otherworldly when I played it and I was enjoying SF2T on the Snes an hour before getting to see the 3DO port. It could be the CRT hides blemishes like they did with Genesis and Snes games. Things like the Sonic The Hedgehog water level and dithering come to mind. What do you think? Is it possible?
I didn't show the specs because the 3DO works completely differently. It doesn't really have dedicated 2D graphics in the way that older tile and sprite based systems did. Because of that, it really didn't make sense to talk about the hardware. Regarding CRTs, the worse the TV quality, the less obvious any visual issues were in any system, especially colors. For the waterfalls in Sonic to look transparent, you'd really need a pretty awful CRT, they never looked transparent on the monitors or TVs that I used in those days. I mostly used composite video on old c64 and Amiga monitors until I went up to a 32 inch TV with an S-video connection and then used that pretty much from the Jaguar until the HD era.
@InglebardGaming I know that, but....this is the pointless comparison video. If there ever was a time to do it now, it would be it. Addendum- When I talked about Sonic I was referring to the water level itself. As the Genesis could not do proper transparencies (without trickery) they had serious issues getting the effect right. They had to do some type of interrupt in the middle of the screen which caused horrible artifacting all over. That's when they added the waves on the top to hide it from players eyes. A CRT TV really makes the illusion look great. No, the waterfalls color-banded like crazy because of the dithering effect. Thankfully, it did help sell it because waterfalls do create rainbow effects.
nice idea and nice vid but you should have added embedded captions with the game titles!! (at least at the beginning of every game clip)
You use your foot to jump by pressing space bar. Well we used to back in the day when the c64 was set up on the floor on the family tv
honestly was still a fun port if you grew up with it or before that in 94 when i got a genesis and champion edition for christmas, the fact that I could play street fighter at home was amazing at the time.
i didnt even know ali baba was a sega game. It was my first msx ever, in cartridge. The sound was soooo freaking annoying man, i kinda hated that game....also, it was too similar to pac man...
Really seems like you got a bad one. Mine didnt have most of those issues. Also i only use the RA menu as most everything is optimized on it. My battery also last for awhile depending on the game. But good for people to see its a mixed bag. Could get a good one or one with issues. I also dont agree with included roms. Only because i dont wanna see more legal action by nintendo. I dont care how you get the roms aside from that.
I did switch to MuOs so I can play Stardew Valley and Axiom Verge on my 35xxsp. Which I like better than the stock bs they use.
I don't think that I got a "bad" one as I've seen most of the issues I had mentioned by other people in other places since I put this up. Anbernic isn't exactly a name associated with quality, as their screen issues with the RG Cube have shown. I do really like the Arc though. Weird on that one they didn't include any ROMs but did include pirated emulators from the play store when you boot into Android.
@InglebardGaming I'm just going off experience, I've been doing this about 10 years. For me Anbernic is the higher quality. I considered retroid 2nd but after the flip powkiddy may move up from 3rd. Yeah they dropped the ball with the cube screen. All but 1 of my anbernic devices have been flawless. The 300x is the only bad one I got.
@ExiledRetro Me too, I've had indie portables since the earliest of the GPD days. So far, I'd say AYN is the best there is at the moment, love the Odin 2. But looking at the SP, first, I still gave it a 7 out of 10. I like it. I just think there are simple things Anbernic could have done to improve it without affecting the price. I have nothing against Anbernic, I'd still consider buying their stuff if it looked interesting. But I'm going to criticize them for the stuff they do that's worthy of being criticized. The Arc is around the same price and just feels like a better product with better components, for example (I gave it an 8).
@InglebardGaming same here lol. Also when I consider my top quality list I mean massively produced Chinese handhelds. My AYN Loki Max is my favorite hands down. But AYN, Aya Neo I put in a separate category. I also count x86 as a stand alone category
Didn't Super Street Fighter 2 introduce a number of different color selections for your player character? I wonder if that's why the Genesis bkgs took a hit in the color dept.
It did, but that shouldn't matter because they're just changing the palettes when you change colors. I have a hunch what MIGHT be going on, but I asked a Genesis developer and am waiting to hear back from them before I say anything since I don't want to give out any possibly wrong info.
I dunno. Im no purist but I thought then and still do now that this was a damned good port for the hardware at the time. It's nearly 1 to 1 in my view.
Yeah the Genesis version sounds terrible. I especially perfer the sound and music from the CPS-1 versions. Its so much beefier and packs a better punch on a stage like Zangief with that groovy bass line and snappy drum samples.
Yeah, and if you listen to any of the music redone over the last few years by fans, you can get an idea about how much better it could and SHOULD have been. The Genesis soundchip was capable of so much more. Also Super SF2 was a CPS2 game. The first one!
this was my first jrpg ever, and is one of my games I like to return to from time to time. Even though first time playing it, it was kind of hard to understand the mechanics, since I did speak no englisch at the time (and it never got a german dub), heck, there are still some elments (like what certain items do), I still don't know/understand XD though somehow I still understood the story somehow. The music, the character design, the battle mechanic, freakin love it all. Honestly the only thing I hate is that ending. Cuase even as a kid I kinda shipped Sarah with bowie and the romance with the princess came completly out of nowhere and forced. Other than that, fantastic game.
It must have been tough to really enjoy and get through without understanding the language! Especially this one since the game tells you what to do and where to go in its relatively open map at times. And yeah, the ending is just OK and really conventional for a fairy-tale type story. Oh, well, at least the rest is pretty great.
@@InglebardGaming surprisingly no, again, I was able to understand the story out of context. Like even with these simple pixels and animation, it was somewhat clear to tell what was going on. Probably cause the story was pretty simpicist but ironicly I would count that as one of the games strenght. Just a easy but still big and fun adventure. And I remember at least getting to the point where they have blown the cave open. And again, overall it's still a fun and great game. ^^ Though I only reached the ending after my english skills improved XD
Good video. It's completely subjective but I personally love the level 1 CD music.
Thanks! Yeah, how much people like the music will definitely be subjective. While I think there are some great CD soundtracks out there, I was personally let down by this one. But I can still see other people enjoying it.
The MAIN difference is that the PC Engine version uses the Gradius checkpoint revival system instead of returning the player in the position they died, a system that Gradius Gaiden ditches when playing with a buddy (otherwise the classic checkpoint system is used in single player) or by default in Gradius V (yup, in Gradius V the checkpoint revival system must be enabled... I dunno if just like Gaiden if you play with a 2nd player ditches that system OR if just like PC Engine AND MSX Salamander goes back to the last checkpoint regardless of who died... like playing the Turbo Tunnel or Volkmyre's Inferno in Battletoads during the bike/plane segments), is also funny how Parodius also has the Salamander (Arcade) revival system starting with Gokujou (or in Europe Fantastic Journey) in the same manner as Gradius Gaiden for the Arcade and 32-bit ports (Ps1 and Saturn) and on the SNES/SFC if you enable the Salamander revival system as well... I think this extends to Oshaberi Parodius in both SFC and 32-bit consoles (just keep in mind that the Options/Multiples you had when you lose a live are instantly lost instead of having a chance to recover them), however in Sexy Parodius the Salamander revival system when it comes to single player is ONLY used when you pick the Auto power up option. Revival systems aside, the Pc Engine port is amazing, there's also a cheat code to have it in "arcade mode" but I think that's only for the mini-console re-release.
Yeah there were some exclusive features for a few of these Konami games on the mini. As for the checkpoint system in general, it's got plusses and minuses I guess. On the minus side, it makes it way tougher to get through the game so it's a more frustrating experience. Also, there are some places these games put you where its near impossible to make it through without power ups. On the plus side, you're kind of forced to actually get better at the game so you can survive longer with your power ups. In most cases I'd prefer to just come back where I died instantly.
This was one of my favourite arcade conversions back in the day, but it could've been even better. A 2MB cart would've allowed for better graphics and possibly some more percussion in the music
Despite being visually cut back it still plays and sounds great! But yeah either more cart space for improved visuals or maybe eliminating the second game would have made a more visually accurate version of the arcade game possible.
One extra note, the credits sequence in the PC Engine CD version is slighty different if you beat the game in Professional Mode showing the remains of some of the bosses before finishing it the same way as the arcade, you also hear the Gradius 2 navigator say "Congratulations!!!" if you beat the game on that difficulty.
Cool, thanks for the info! I always just play Gradius titles on the default difficulties.
I had this game as a teenager and I agree, this port was such a let down, especially the music. I hated the new announcer as well, he sounded more effeminate than the previous games (why?!). I didn't admit it at the time though 😅
Considering that the console versions were limited by the amount of ROM size (2/3 less)… the ports were impressive. And the music was pretty good on the SNES overall. And I do t remember the colors being so dark on my CRT.
I was surprised to learn (or re-learn, I probably knew and forgot) about the slightly different soundtracks in the Japanese and European versions. A few of the songs are WAY better in those versions of the game.
I got a Saturn in 97, a year before I would get a PlayStation, and the thing I loved about the Saturn growing up was all the sprite-based RPGs on the console
Letter box because of the multi with snes having an even bigger letter box... Graphically it improves alot compared to turbo, sprites are bigger. Animation, well, add stars up to four... you even have an 8 stars demo mode in vs when you look at ai vs ai match... Capcom mess the musics but the voices were better than SCE and same are arcade... All in all i don t agree...
yeah I still can't believe the Genesis SSF2 had 8 extra megs compared to SNES but somehow sounded worse?! it seemed to play just fine at the very least. Still definitely prefer the SNES version though.
Saying "it's 64bit where it counts" is not admitting anything delinquent. All it's saying is by videogame device standards, it's 64 bit. I had several Jaguar brochures back in 90s which stated the 64 bit data bus is what made the Jaguar a 64 bit system. It even described the processing as a "64-bit freeway". It said nothing about 64bit processors or 2x 32bit CPUs. In the end, bits don't mean anything if you don't know how to use them.
good video and agree with much of the descriptions, but the "fake" parallex is impressive for the PCE/TG-16 and I prefer the darker colors in the PCE/TG-16 vs. the washed out brighter look to the arcade. Also the option of PCE Mode or Arcade mode makes the PCE/TG-16 the better overall game IMHO. As for EGM Sushi-X giving the game a 10? Nah, but it is one of the better ninja games of the time.
This is a cool idea for a comparison. I’d like to see you go Game Boy Advance vs Sega Saturn games.
I actually like super streetfighter 2 on the Mega Drive, but I’m not gonna lie I definitely prefer special champ edition may need due to the much better graphics and music and the gameplay is definitely the main reason why I have super streetfighter 2 in my collection and I did play back when it was new back in 94 I honestly don’t remember caring about the graphics and sound. I mean I knew the voices were bad but all I cared about is that I was playing super street fighter 2 at home but overall it’s a lazy port and I say that this port also contributed to the bad sound rep that the Mega Drive gets as the sound is one of the worst on the system that it’s actually kind of insulting and equally as bad as that Capcom thought it was acceptable with Capcom just doing the bare minimum.
Yeah, I did like the game back then, but still acknowledged all its shortcomings even in those days. One huge plus of course was getting to play it with the Sega 6 button pad which felt way better than using an SNES controller, IMO. But in the end, so disappointing that Capcom didn't do anythingt o take advantage of the strengths of the Genesis for this game.
