  • Here's my conversation with / interview of Pigsy, who's working on the Genesis / Mega Drive Castlevania Symphony of the Night demake. I've whittled down our longer conversation to about an hour and 45 minutes. So grade a snack and a drink, or feel free to take breaks and come back later to listen to the whole thing. I also show footage of the newest demo of Genesis SotN which technically doesn't come out until 12/24! For best results view at 1080p60fps.
EDIT: Pigsy has released his Christmas 2023 demo, here it is: • Castlevania: Symphony ...

Thank you for the interview with Pigsy! I'm really looking forward to the demo!
If the console's palette(s) coudn't get any bigger at the time of design, then the MCD should have had its own VDP and video output, even if another feature had to be dropped for cost reduction (scaling/rotation? Get the basics right first!).
PS: I'm now playing Wonder Boy III with the FM sound on the Japanese Master System, there are some great enhancements to the music!
    Happy holidays!🎄

Pier solar on Genesis has a mode 7 overworld. FF4 is definitely fully possible! Great watch, guys!

Thanks! I checked out the Pier Solar effect, while it's nice and impressive for the hardware, I'm still convinced that the effect in FF4 could be reproduced more smoothly, but who knows. Hopefully we'll find out some day.

"Pyrons Lair" Como funciona os Sprites nos 16-bits ?
Find this video for the most detailed explanation of sprite limits for Genesis, TG16,SNES. Explains the resolution and sprite limits change for Genesis res modes. Unfortunately you'll have to deal with on the fly caption translation

Loved the interview, also seeing the work done in this game it's really interesting. Not only it will inspire other people to try develop more games for the console but music as well.
39:37 (Sorry if this gets long to read lol) Yeah I always thought the same thing. People hated the MD sound and practically most arcade hardware (and PCs with the Adlib and stuff) use FM and nobody complain about it, they in fact consider music from Ghouls 'n ghosts or Turtles in time classics and they all use FM sound chips, some arcades and PC games ports for the console sound almost exactly like the originals, even better than the originals in some cases but no, they suck because they aren't from the Super Nintendo or crap like that (No SNES hate, just making an example). I know people who even listening to examples side by side still say the same thing, they have their brains washed out with that ignorant argument.
I've read a lot of Japan comments and posts when something FM related appears on YT or Twitter and they love it, when the MD it's mentioned it's always in a fair way like the rest of the hardware like PC-98 or X68000 in terms of audio, they never had that hate idea towards it and we all know the console wasn't even close as popular in Japan like in the rest of the world.
The console got "westernized" if that makes sense, being more popular here of course more developers from the west had the chance to do games but sadly unlike Japan, FM synthesis wasn't as big and it showed in their games, not all but most of them.

It's hard to explain just why the sound in so many western developed games was just distinctly bad. It's not entirely the fault of GEMS, people made a few things that sounded OK with it. Still, even a lot of western arcade games using the YM2151 sounded pretty rough (see pretty much all of Atari's arcade line up in the 16-bit era).
It's definitely an interesting topic that might be worth it's own video.

Porting Amiga/ST games was what happened when the Jaguar was still being supported. They're just continuing the tradition.

Maybe guys who know the hardware well should come up with an AJDK...

    • @InglebardGaming

To a much smaller extent. There were some ports and they normally at least had a little more color or sounded better. A lot of modern ST ports are just direct ports that are almost identical to the ST versions, without any real enhancements.

I'm not enthusiastic about the new Shinobi at all, I already looked at it and it looks like it has COMBO's and all that XTREME garbage. Shinobi is simple to get right, it doesn't need combo's and mechanics from other games. It needs Shinobi mechanics. Run through levels flinging ninja stars at easy to kill enemies while collecting something like bombs or hostages. That's it. I didn't like the graphic style either.

I'm hopeful what they showed was just a prototype and it'll be cleaned up and consistent in the end.

@@InglebardGamingLet's hope so, it looked like a sequel to Mark of the Ninja more than Shinobi.
