Forgotten War Ep1 - Witness the Rising Sun
In January 1942 the Japanese Army poured over the border with Burma, and pushed back the Indian and British Armies to the border with Burma. Today we look at how that disaster came about, why and the first phase of the campaign

    I'm sorry to chime in like this, but I have to raise a few points about Stillwell (honestly I kinda feel for the guy). While lacking combat experience, he wasn't half bad, and the Americans considered him to be one of their best infantry commanders, and would prove it in the Louisiana Maneuvers. Also, it wasn't a joke to send him to China, because Marshall was looking for a man who spoke Mandarin, had been to China and was of sufficient rank to not offend Chiang with the appointment. Not many who fit that bill in 1940s US Army. And a final thing, Stillwell was an honest man, and proved to be incorruptible with regards to Lend-Lease. I think Marshall was afraid that China would just absorb all the aid and not do any fighting by buying off or manipulating (ge. So'n'so, you are the only one who truly understands China and such, probably said by a beautiful Chinese woman) the American controlling it and lobbying in Washington (which is what Chiang actually wanted, or more likely his wife's family). As to why he remained for two years after the Peanut incident (he was right by the way, Chiang's bald head really does look like a peanut), the Chinese were angling for Chennault to take over for Stillwell, and he, like the Chinese was corrupt and venal, but unlike the Chinese, was actually stupid.

    • @HardThrasher
      @HardThrasher Před 4 hodinami

      Firstly, thank you for the comment, I was somewhat surprised not to have more Stillwell supporters chime in, but I think he's basically been forgotten in the US now. I started off quite sympathetic to him, but it's hard to be nice about him after a while. The usual War Dept vs everyone else politics didn't help and Marshall wantes to send his man, partly to avoid anyone else sending theirs, and Marshall's pool was quite limited, and clearly you're right there was a rank / language mix in there too. Stillwell was I think third choice for the post, but I couldn't find enough out about the other two. Fundamentally he was totally unsuitable for the job, his temprement was all over the shop, and just not compatible. Chennault was not much more than a straight up crook, but sending someone from the USAAF - Ira Eaker springs to mind - would've probably been better. In reality I suspect whoever they sent would've failed - China wasn't the land the US thought it was, Chaing wasn't someone they could control, and the Chinese didn't want yet another westerner running things behind the scenes. By '43 Stillwell did the sensible thing and created his own force to do the job and both he and the US gave up on Chaing.

He went to be a Chindit and never came back. She never married and his picture was by her side all her life. All war is hard, but Burma was very hard indeed. Thanks for putting a spotlight on it.

    Great introduction to the Burma Campaign! Even if it's also forgotten here the campaign had a large cascading effect on Thai politics for the rest of the 20th century. Originally Thailand was scheduled to join the Japanese assault on Rangoon but was not allowed to due to fears that it would alienate Japanese relations with the Burmese nationalists. After a lot of angry letters to Tokyo Thailand was allowed to operate troops in the Shan States, but the command at the time had zero clue of what they were doing and many of the men suffered from atrocious logistics. Moreover, the Japanese did not share any supplies with them and treated their allies the same way they did their colonial subjects. In the last stages of the campaign as the Japanese made their frantic retreat back to the Thai border the Thai troops operating in the Shan states were given zero support from Japan or Thailand (whose fascist government had been overthrown by the pro-American faction in 1944). When the war was over the Japanese got to go home in requisitioned trains, but the Thai troops had to walk home 1000s of kilometers on foot through some of the harshest tropical jungles in the world because the new post-war government (same people who were in charge the last stage of the war) disbanded all of them without warning. With the Japanese gone and the Americans concluding Thailand's war participation as forced by the Japanese, they channeled all of their anger for their suffering to the pro-American government and launched a coup in 1947 to install the old fascist guy back. The coup pretty much started the endless cycle of military coups that would last until today. Looking forward to part 2 and eventually Imphal, a battle so disastrous that Renya Mutaguchi became synonymous with incompetence in Japan!

    This was the theatre where my great-grandfather served in the Royal Signals as a radio operator and telegraphist. By the end of the war he had become a photographer for the Royal Signals, and took photographs of the signing of the Japanese surrender in this theatre. He passed away before I was born, but I'm told he never liked to discuss his service - from his perspective conscription just led to him being sent off to the other side of the world and not seeing his wife or children for more than four years.
