    OK a quick note on socialism and what it is and isn’t.
    Socialism is a very broad term covering a lot of different kinds of thinking and which emerged in the 1830s as an idea to transfer wealth from the rich to the poor. In Marx and Engels you'll see that described as the Factors of Production, because they felt it should include things like privilege as well as material stuff like buildings and, critically for Marx, capital.
    However Marx is an extreme outlier because he believed revolution and Historical Determinism e.g. look at the past and divine the future, revolution and the emergence of a capital-free workers paradise...which is pretty batshit insane and far beyond what most modern socialists would advocate for.
    One can reasonably measure a society by how well it looks after its weakest and most vulnerable members, and if not then we still need a lot of stuff from the state to survive e.g. roads, education, defence etc - otherwise the state ceases to be. This is likely to include the use of taxation of rich people and giving to poor people. Therefore *all* states have some element of socialism within them and that is a wholly good thing, it only becomes a problem when combined with authoritarianism.
    The coercion required for the removal of ambition that Marx saw was what led to the Soviet and Chinese systems. However coercion is used by all Right wing states too - not least the whole of the feudal system in Europe and Asia, all monarchies, significant chunks of South America between 1900-2000 and, of course, by the Thin Blue Line brigade when they want you to not be able to protest or get an abortion. All states contain this too, and their monopoly on violence defines a state. Again, if it goes toofar, and shuts down democratic processes that’s when it becomes a problem.

      perfect explanation, sir!

    • @agriphalalbion115
      @agriphalalbion115 Před 5 měsíci +13

      In this explanation you compare the modern interpretation of socialism in the West with the events of 1920 to 1940 and conclude that the NASDP were lying about their stated belief in socialism. This is an ahistorical turn. Should we compare the liberals 0f 1848 with the 21st century interpretation of what that word means, and state that these people were not really liberals?

    • @williamchamberlain2263
      @williamchamberlain2263 Před 5 měsíci +39

      @@agriphalalbion115 there's a 1923 interview with Hitler in which he states that he's redefining 'socialism' to "take it away from the Socialists" and turn it into nationalism - you _can_ compare two meanings of a word at different periods, or the same period, when one meaning has been explicitly changed in a well-defined way.

    • @agriphalalbion115
      @agriphalalbion115 Před 5 měsíci

      @williamchamberlain2263 Sure, Hitler said that. He also consistently called himself a socialist and that the party has "privatised" the national economy by installing party officials in corporations and removing uncooperative directors. I think he really believed what he was saying. It's a different debate as to how close he was with his words to reality. I my opinion, not even in sight of reality.

    • @Starwar111ITA
      @Starwar111ITA Před 5 měsíci +17

      A quick note to everything you've said sir (solid explanation btw, everything is spot on and I agree with the point you've made). Marx himself wrote in various letters to Engels in 1884, and in the manifesto itself, that democracy was a vital part to achieving their goals: in an authoritarian state workers wouldn't have the means to organize or protest, to reach the tipping point for the big revolution to happen.
      Marx also believed that some countries (the UK, the US and some others I'm forgetting), could perhaps reach socialism by virtue of voting and a peaceful transition of sorts, but unfortunately his insane ideas about historical determinism and the big revolution were the main way to reach his goal.
      Still, thank you for the video milord, there's lots to like and it's unfortunate that such interesting (and also kinda horrifying due to the whole slavery and g****ide bit) stories have to be buried under modern political bile. (I also apologize for any butchering of the english language I've done sir, I am not from the mainland, nor one of the colonies, and I'm sure I've written an unrecognizable mess).
      As a final aside, as a left leaning person myself, I strongly believe that we should start distancing ourselves (left-wing people) from the guy. Not that he didn't have good ideas, he certainly did have some, but the man lived in the mid-1800s. We shouldn't be clinging ourselves to the past so much, spouting theories and concepts from a bygone age. We can all see what unfettered capitalism has brought to the table, and what greedy corporations and investors can do to society and to the common working man. Why not start from there?

      A lot of people don’t realize that there was actually not a negligible amount of support for a dictator in many western countries. There was in particular in America many different schools of thought regarding what kind of system should replace what they believed to be the defunct one that had caused the depression. But we were able to gradually recover and get past that. Because the treaty of Versailles hit Germany hard already the stock market crash hit them even harder, thus the appeal for some fiery speaker who claimed they would fix everything seemed ever greater. It was kind of the perfect storm of events in Germany at the time that allowed Hitler to rise. But I think here in the west we were a bit closer than we realize to a similar fate.

    This story kinda underlines how the biggest enemy of a nazi is another nazi. And this is true for all dictatorships. For example, the biggest concern of the Soviet Union was to monitor (i.e. spy on) its own allies and communist organisations in other countries in order to 'weed out any internal enemies'.
    Thus, dictatorships are stupendously inefficient as they end up needing to support oversized internal security services and manage and pay a huge network of informants. What is worse, every citizen's career becomes dependent on if they denounce or inform on the right people at the right time - and so, cooperation ceases both on the societal and personal level. Every small decision becomes a backstabbing power struggle, where party apparatchiks try to outplay the outsiders and each other, micromanaging every aspect of every decision. Basically the country stops working. This is how the Soviet Union ended up with all those empty shelves and crappy cars - and this is where the Nazi regime would have ended up, if they were to survive WWII.

      It's important to remember that fascism is hard to define chiefly because it's more a political cheat code, the quickest path to power. Fascists often personally believe in nonsense but fundamentally they believe in winning, that the strong winners must shape society and thus will do whatever they can, however they can to win.
      They think winning makes you right when winning just ensures you're in charge when the ship hits the iceberg you fought to steer towards (it sounded like a good idea at the time to the passengers who don't know how ships work).
      Any political party that focuses on winning over any other consideration becomes like fascists be default, blaming everything on an outgroup is easy votes, gaming the political system and backstabbing gets support from capital, all of it works to get you in charge but destroys functioning systems to do it. You win but the state becomes a looted hulk bouyed purely by combative hatred of a vague pike of "bad things" and "bad guys" who can't meaningfully be countered because they include the whole rest of human life on earth, or at least everyone who's not a heroic ubermench, meaning even the glorious leader falls outside the definition.
      Fascists are dangerous because they win, and then they have to keep winning forever or their entire ideology crumbles and eats itself. The nazis could never win because they'd have to defeat everyone on earth, at which point they'd start killing each other to explain why their society still sucks to live in.

The second is “Roads to Moscow” an epic about a Russian soldier’s experience from June 1941 to October of 1945. Both are on the same album, “Past, Present and Future” which was, originally, meant tp have a songe about each decade through the 1960s. It’s not quite like that but these two songs cover the decades of the Second World War and, for studetns of history, are not to be missed.

The companies are nominally independent of the tyrant of the day but nobody gets to run them without his approval. If the company acted against the interests of the tyrant the concentration camp or a high window is waiting to say hello.
