Hand Carving Woodsrunner Flintlock Rifle Kit

This one took me a long time to edit and I apologize for not getting this out to you all sooner. In this video Jim does a very basic, but beautiful, carving on the Kibler Woodsrunner that involves a toe line, a volute on each side of the comb and a cheek carving. Jim demonstrates various techniques including incise carving with a v-tool, relief carving, and scraping with a chisel. We do sell cu...

Stock Sand-Along with Jim Kibler. Showing proper technique on sanding a flintlock muzzleloader kit.
zhlédnutí 62KPřed rokem
Jim teaches how to properly sand a stock in this video. This is an area of gun building, especially when they are built from kits, where people tend to rush. When this is properly done the staining and finishing will go smoothly and look beautiful. During the filming we had high winds and the power flickered off and on a number of times. The first time, when it came back on, the vacuum pump tha...
Kibler Woodsrunner Assembly Part 3 Fitting the Ramrod. Useful Tips for EVERY Flintlock Muzzleloader
zhlédnutí 17KPřed rokem
In this video, Jim shows how to assemble the tip of the ramrod as well and size and fit the ramrod into the ramrod channel and pipes and stock. This is a very common problem that new gun builders have since ramrods come a little bit oversized. We get phone calls and emails all the time about the ramrod not fitting and we try to explain that a LOT of sanding is required to get it to fit. Jim sho...

They're never in stock.
@@Man_Cave wrong. We have many in stock all the time.
There is a way to control the density of the color. Cut the solution by 3, take a day per coat to get what you want. Stop, Bob's your uncle.
Does the iron nitrate continue to turn color and eventually turn black?
I just ordered mine this week Personally I think making it easy is great for people like me with little skills in this area. We can get a first class rifle kit that will be a family heirloom quality rifle that we can have a hand in finishing
Any update on when these start shipping?
They will start shipping next week. Thanks for everybody’s patience.
What a wonderful job on our gun! Question how did you darken the pins
You can always tell when your getting old……..er, we start fussing about things like like light 💡’s. Not laughing at you, I’m laughing with ya! 😂
Do you know when the term Woodsrunner was given to this rifle?
I sure am glad he tests tongue out and tongue in. I would want a rifle so finnicky that I have to hold my tongue a certain way to make it fire. ;)
I ordered the Fowler 20 gauge any buddy know what size mold I need to get
Thanks for putting out these great videos and for making such great products I’m mighty excited about the new Fowler almost have the money saved up to put in an order. Thanks again
a lot of pucker factor going on !!
Do you need a heat gun?
Well I need to follow up. I ordered a Woodsrunner during the summer sale ships tomorrow. I got my kit in four days. it arrived on Saturday and I had it all dry fit within about two hours of very careful examination and assembly. There was near zero fitting needed on my stock. The barrel was snug in the channel but it was yet to be draw filed. After filling it fit like a glove. The amazing thing was how perfect the tang and barrel seat is. I blackened all the parts with a kerosene lamp and everything marked off fully seated like the wood grew around the barrel. Here it is Monday And my metal is prepped and I'm final sanding the stock. I'm ready to blue my metal bits and when my tannic acid shows up with the aqua fortis I'll be good to go. I think I'll be able to go do load work up end of June. I've never seen a "prefit" stock that fits as well as your stock nor one that almost needs no sanding. I can tell there was a huge investment of time and fixturing to make a kit as close to perfect as possible. I think I'm going to order a SMR next. Unless you decide to build a true Hawken.
To the guy in the background playing with the dog don't do it on camera dummy .lol
What oil did you use to with the boneblack ??
All I can say is thank you for machining these butt plates. I spent about an hour cleaning up a machined woodsrunner butt plate. Very easy to clean up and took little more than some fine files and fine sand paper
I’ve put at least four of these kits together and never had to do this?
Great demo Jim! Tks
Is there a reason it’s done at night? Easier to see?
Nice walk through
Okay, I think I can do this. I'm kind of a hot head with no patience my wife says and she thinks I wont be able to build it without rushing and messing things up haha, but after watching these videos it doesn't seem so bad.
Good day Jim It would be great to see a carved woods runner with finished on it to see the carving stand out in depth Thanks

So you use bluing solution on your wood, it keeps getting darker eventually turning black or grey looks awesome by the way
Just saw this video now in June 2024, great job you have done. My only bitch is leaving the parts covered by hardware unstained/lacquered. To me it's kinda like going out in the city without wearing underwear.
Is there a size of V gouge that works best? What would be your recommendation?
Would you recommend this for walnut?
For walnut you only need to use a sealer or oil of your choice. You can adjust the color with aniline dyes. We sell a few, or you can get them from Laurel Mountain Forge. They have a nice color chart on their website.
Great work, Jim! Love the design and the technique. Just offhand,, however, how much added machine time does this require? Saving up to order mine! One of these in fancy maple, and a smoothbore in some nice walnut.
Thanks! It's a couple hours of machine time.
When you learn from the Master it is all exciting!
Wow, that takes a LOT of coats! I never would have guessed! I would have panicked thinking I had done something wrong! Great video!
When I was active duty and working on the flightline my nails always looked like his. I was constantly fighting to keep dirt, grime, oil, and smutz out from under them. Keeping them short and torn up helped with that. Great set of videos, I enjoyed the entire series. Now I'm going to watch you apply a finish!
One day, one day!
Jim Kibler
Jim warns us to be careful of to toe.... Be careful. Do not set it down on the floor.... Trust me!
What grade wood is this with this kit from Kiblers?Im otdering one soon. Great video!
Extra Fancy Maple
Wood is beautiful but a composite stock would be interesting.
I'm guessing that the first few cuts are powdery because of the surface hardening during the gun drilling?
One day, I'm going to win the lottery and set up a home machine shop. I hope by then, you have patented this and are selling your tech to the public. I've watched many videos of the different rifling processes and this is absolutely phenomenonal ‼️ I would do this in a heartbeat if I could. Thank you so much ‼️
👍🏻
I got the email announcing the soon production of these and was wondering why walnut stock wood is encouraged. For historical accuracy? Easier machining/carving? The forest is depleted of maple? I’d really have to see one all done up in walnut to decide, because that maple one looks so good. Also, I’m used to the aqua fortis finishing method and am not familiar with what it would take to make walnut look good. Pore filling? Dyes? I know you guys have put a lot of long hours into this rifle, and it does not disappoint.
We recommend the walnut for it's historical accuracy. Tried and True Varnish Oil looks nice on walnut.
I jist pre ordered mine! I'm so excited jim, I've been wanting a fowler for years now. Was going g to buy a TVM fowler about a year ago, and I heard rumors about your kit. So I've been waiting patiently!
Thanks! We appreciate it. I think you’ll be pleased with your choice.
Very cool, I can't wait. I love my mountain rifle and Woodsrunner. This will be a nice addition to the stable.
I know what I’m buying next !!
You keep appreciating them and it is making them go beyond my affordability range ! Stop it ! I absolutely love these flintlocks. 😁👍
I'm still convincing my wife I need one
Bravo! Very impressive!
