Hiking the Stevenson Trail (GR 70) in Autumn
The Stevenson Trail, or GR 70, is a 272 km trail in Cévennes, France.
It follows for the most part the steps of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who after a heartbreak, went in 1878 for a walk in the South of France.
He later published Travels with a donkey in the Cévennes, about the walk he did with a donkey called Modestine.
It is now one of the most (if not THE most) popular trail in France.
If you're planning to hike it during peak season and don't want to camp, it is suggested to book accomodation a year in advance.
Another good option is to hike it later in the season, which is what I did.
I started in early November, it was peak foliage time, cold and quiet.

      C'est vrai qu'il y a énormément de Coréens sur le Francés. Je crois que ca vient du fait qu'il y a eu un livre à succès dessus et aussi que c'est un pays où le christianisme est la religion largement majoritaire. Par contre on en voit beaucoup moins sur le Baegdu-Daegan 😆 vu que pas grand monde ne fait ce sentier. A juste titre à mon avis, c'est un sentier beaucoup trop dur et laissé à l'abandon. Deal Gael, I will be hiking the GR 2 for 10 days starting in Dijon in the middle of this June. I’ve been backpacking in the California Sierra Nevada for over 40 years, but I have not done such a hike like the ones going through the French country side. I don’t plan to cook and will rely on markets, caffès and restaurants in the small towns and villages. Looks like I will need to bring a small tent as it could rain there at nights. In the summer, we don’t get rain in the Sierra Nevada maybe 95% of the time. Only in the afternoons and evenings mostly. Do you have any pointers and suggestions I should know about? My concern is that the trails may not be marked in all cases as I could not see markers when looking at google street views. But it maybe small and not visible on google view but visible to the hiker on the ground. I don’t know if there is cell service in the rural areas. Thank you.

    • @gaelchasingtrails2943
      @gaelchasingtrails2943 Před 3 měsíci

      Hi, I haven't hiked the GR 2, but I'm sure it's well marked. You can get a gpx track here www.visugpx.com/L5l92iApRE If you're not planning in staying in hotels, a tent is mandatory because it can definitely rain (especially in this area). On this kind of trail I'd say it will be easy to get food since you're probably passing a lot of villages. A good way to find water when hiking in France is to go the cemeteries. Most of them have tap water near the entrance to water the flowers. Wild camping (or bivouac) is usually OK in France, even in not so wild and remote places. I never had an issue with it. Using common sense, pitching discreetly and not too early makes it doable in most places. On trails in France it's very often a big hassle to stay in campgrounds, since they're usually not near the trail. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. Happy trails.

      Perso je pense qu'octobre est un moment parfait pour le faire. Météo sympa, jolies couleurs et un peu moins de monde. Après comme je l'ai fait moi (principalement en tente), c'est assez solitaire, mais les gîtes qui sont ouvert à cette période voient quand même du trafic, donc ça peut rester une expérience sociale aussi pour ceux qui veulent

      @gaelchasingtrails2943 Před 8 měsíci

      8 days will be hard if you never hiked before. There's a lot of elevation gain and loss everyday. But it's doable if you're in shape. A good way to save weight (and make the hike easier) is to stay in the refuges and eat there as well. This way you don't have to carry a tent/mattress and just need a little bit of food with you. Though it makes the hike much more expensive. But way easier. It's an amazing trail, hope you enjoy it!
