Hiking the Hebridean Way

  • In 2022, after hiking the Scottish National Trail, I hiked a few other trails in Scotland, including the 155 miles (247km) Hebridean Way.
The Southern terminus is in Vatersay and the Northern one at the Butt of Lewis.
The section from Butt of Lewis to Stornoway isn't finished yet, so it's mostly a roadwalk.
This trail is best walked Northbound (I learned it the hard way), so you don't have to deal with a constant face wind.

Lovely to see it again in your video.... We finished it last week.... what a contrast, we didn't have to use a bus stop! We hiked in 12 days in a total of two hours of rain! Rest of time was sunny...came back sun burnt... though we had a cold north wind in our face for a week, so much for that wind behind you! But the wind was nothing like you were experiencing... as implied we headed north, up hill, opposite direction to you;) We had some tough days too, that bog and endless road walking does sap your strength, but overall it was an amazing 12 days..

      Glad you enjoyed it.
      Good weather?? Lucky you 😆
      I'm really jealous.
Yes, that was pretty horrible when I did it.
I had never experienced such a strong wind for such a long time, that was insane 😅
Though I would love to do it again with good weather someday, because it really is a beautiful walk and I didn't get to enjoy it properly.
This time I would go northbound though 😆

Non c'était une sacrée galère 😅
Mais si j'ai l'occasion j'aimerais quand même le refaire par beau temps.

People tend to hike south to north instead because the winds always going northwest from the north Atlantic ocean.

Yes, I started up North because that's where the ferry from Skye took me, but if I were to hike it again, I'd definitely make the effort to go South to start there 😅

Ah makes sense, I'm starting the route on Monday. Flying directly on to the isle of Barra! First solo backpacking I've done. Any tips for the route?

@@wadsee1111 Nice! I hope you have good weather. Are you planning to camp? I found that it wasn't the easiest place to camp because of the terrain and the wind. Though I somehow managed to camp all the way. But it can be good to have a plan B for where to stay in the evening. Also, waterproof shoes are useless in my opinion, even more so in Scotland, because they always get wet eventually, but they'll never dry. I hope you have a great time there, happy trails!

@@gaelchasingtrails2943 yes I'll be wild camping. Good idea, I might add some markers for campsites/hostels if it's looking unlikely to find somewhere. Thanks!
