Chris Longhurst here, I've been working in construction for 40 years. I've decided to start filming my work because I enjoy it, love the challenges it brings and want to pass my knowledge onto you guys interested in watching.

In this video we are moving the front door forward to create more space in order for the clients to be able to get up their stairs. A straight forward job it turned into a big job due to building regulations. This video explains the issues with a small job like this and walks you through the stages.

bricklayer ????? the frog goes down not up (that's the dip in the brick for you none bricklayers)
Sir, your skills are amazing
Great vids. I’ve started digging out the foundation for a garden room which will have an insulated slab floor. Do you think I really need to dig down to 1m for the footings though? It’s permitted development so I don’t need building regs but it is clay. Cheers
Chris you are elegant in your master skills.
superb job 👏
surely that amount of water must weaken the concrete severely ?
The concrete is a C25 over site mix, it’s a standard slump and is water graded to that standard. The water you saw was rain water on the visqueen which was scooped off into the cavity as the flowing concrete pushed it upwards. If you look carefully you’ll see the worker with the red tamper dragging it into the cavity!
i see the mortar between the bricks dried differnt colours did you use differnt sand?
No it’s all same sand from same builders merchant, the mix was a 4 sand x 1 cement! Possibly it was taking time to cure more than other areas. See end result all brickwork has dried uniform!
Made my day with memories of building my house 40 odd years back. So refreshing to know that Flemish bond is still up there. Spoke to a young lad starting out and he has yet to do any work other than stretcher and bucket handle pointing. He had never heard of lime mortar which suprised me. Loved the nice touch of the camber arch over the window and a proper looking cill.
No mortar between the block? Only that tiny core filled?
They are an interlocking block and don’t have purp joints, the hole that’s being filled are the gaps used for the bricklayers hands in order to lift the blocks and helps to lay the heavy blocks!
I had to do one of these, and it's my first attempt at brick laying. Its going OK so far, but I've got a bad suspicion it's one of the more tricky things to try for a beginner. Because unlike if you were doing a wall, there's no string line to follow, and you're putting the next bricks right on top of the ones you just laid, and putting the 2nd brick on always wants to upset the first as you push the buttered side together.
Nice one. We need to keep your skills alive, I hear a lot of new-build chimneys are now GRP because of the skills shortage. :(
How the hell do you get a builder on your job who is this good? It's total pot-luck. There's a lot of regulations to follow but absolutely no way for an average home-owner to verify if builders are even going to bother.
Maybe you could do a short tutorial on profile ans story poles? You are such a good craftsman.
Everyone should have a mentor like this guy. Craftsmanship.
Aww thank you👍
Lovely detail you are putting in! Would the Victorians have used a lime base mortar?
Yes and they used a gritty black sand with the lime👍
This looks really good, I hope the homeowner was pleased with the end result as you've built it perfectly. Thanks for making the videos and sharing this with us.
Thank 👍you
One day, you will be gone, but your brickwork will stand there for another century. I have always admired bricklayers.
A sobering thought especially when you think how fast time seems to go by! But yeah a truly amazing thing🤔👍
Chris, you give everyone so much confidence in the way you build. You would be a great teacher 👍👍
Awww thank you for your kind comments 👍
Great job 👍
nice work 👌 good to see
Closures ...... Not Queen Closures . Told you this before . 🏴
😂😂
isn't it great when someone knows what they're doing
Thanks for videos love you guys ! Did you make the pan stands ?
Thank you👍….yes we did out of spare tile battens they can also be used in so may other ways too😊
What a cracking job, craftsman 👍👊
Many thanks👍
Cambered
Do you not use formers anymore? It’s lucky you’re very good but if you had an apprentice you might get the reveal plumb.
You’re not making sense bud…The brick arch is being built over an arch former…if I had an apprentice you might get the reveal plum (what do you mean?)
It was as I sent the comment, the formers appeared
you are right to put the elbow in, I put a P trap in to stop the sewer gas coming out the porch roof drain. It both froze up and clogged up and had to be redone right.
stellar job, looks like it was always there. canine therapy though, not sure what that's about, there are people in the UK who can't afford to eat.
Bloody hell...now I want to do some brick work....and I'm a framer and a roofer...he made it look easy...I can do that....YEAH RIGHT....nice work....the best brikeys...seem to be over on the other side of the pond....good day from Michigan
Nice one, good day to you bro from Staffordshire mid England 🏴🍻
Very nice job. I never had the patience to learn bricklaying. I had a very good friend who could lay bricks and blocks and stones from the time we were ten years old. I always admired his patience. Maybe after watching you I will give it a try, patience has set in as I got older. Thank you for the great content.
Thank you😊..Yeah I guess as we get older we change, have a go and I wish all the best👍🧱
lime mortar
Your like watching a surgeon! A ton of work involved in that tiny area! Awesome videos really
Could watch a you all day a true artisan 👍
Thank you very much👍
Cracking job Chris , I’m a time served Brickie myself who gave up the trade in my late 20’s to take up a completely different career path - I seen far too many old Scottish brickies bent , stooped , broken and riddled with arthritis with the cold damp weather at home - I digress , it’s great seeing the easy skill you show on your vids and I whooped with delight when I correctly predicted how you were going to overcome facing the RSJ with cuts etc . Look forward to more of your content Chris ✊ 👍🏴
Aww thank you, yeah I’ve had two hip replacements on my right leg and one on my left leg but that’s an hereditary condition…My wife is a Fife woman👍
@@foundationgood123 Ah.. fae the Kingdom O Fife 👌… Well good luck with the hip issue my friend , proper sore having issues there .. ouch ! 👍🏴
Would u save time with higher concrete foundation with brick shelf? Anyway great informative videos!
That is not a CAMBER ARCH.
Goofy bricks..very irregular Nd sized poorly.. Do your best... Carry on
what the brown mortar? at the clay? or cement?
Lime mortar
@@foundationgood123 Lime!?!?!?! but, Holmes, why???
It’s elementary dear Watson
Thank you. Only good valuable tradesman in not afraid to share his knowledge.
Canverd? what?
Wish spot boards were up high in my days ....no bending, still can't avoid bending or "nosebleeding" though
Can these thermalite type blocks be used on either side?
They would need to be 7 Neuton blocks to withstand the weather, these are specifically made blocks for underground and would be a 7 Neuton
Very very impressive Chris, beautifully blended to the old..
Thanks👍
Not Good You Need A Lintel 😢 Amén.
The big double RSJ steel was already installed many years ago because the original house front was converted into a big shop frontage, I was reinstating the original frontage and the owners didn’t want the huge cost of removing the steels!
So valuable. This will inspire some youngsters❤
They’re the next generation, hopefully we can inspire apprentices on in the art👍
modern scam
What a fab job you did here. Great explanations and talking to us like we are your peers! I have a few construction friends I will be sending this vid too Chris. I hope you have effort to do more of these. I sure could have done without any of the music though. Thanks !
Awesome! Thank you!
