Probably a dumb question but do you have a link for the marker you used? I LIKE that! Great video. I think I want to make a couple of these and a previous poster is correct...show the end product more. Good job on the humidor and the video. Keep it up!
It's been a bit since I made the video, Im guessing you're talking about the what mark I used to mark on the walnut? If so that's actually a Pica Pencil. You can get a couple colors for it, including white. I'm definitely getting better at showing off the product or at least trying to. Thank you for watching!
@@SpaltedStagStudio Thanks!!
Had to do a double take when I saw your push stick. lol howdy neighbor!
Howdy! Kencraft is a great place. The whole family is so helpful. I learned allot from them.
Can you believe Satellite City sent me here to watch this, even though it might potentially refer me to Mercury (or not, we'll see; I'd like to be a patron of Satellite). Truly amazing tech support wanting me to get the best results for my idiosyncratic use, even if it's with a competing product. I'm trying to avoid bubbles in large black CA inlay fill areas between shell shapes. Mercury not only causes least reaction overall, I believe it's less expensive. I'll go back and look at other factors. I'm dying to give SC my business after that help tho, and NCA Quick would probably avoid big bubbles about as well.
Both companies were absolutely great to work with. I still use satellite city products for the most part. Mercury does have some CA glue products that SC does not carry. I also tend to use the NCF Quick for most applications. The only times I do not is when I absolutely do not want bubbles or I want a bit longer cure time. Even though NCF quick doesn't always get the bubbles, I like to play it safe. The mercury adhesives accelerator is great, but I really don't like the smell, and it seems to stick around for a long time. I could see some people being fond of the smell, though.
What gloss did you use? Can you give more details on this? It looks so amazing.
Thanks!! I used a satin lacquer, but I let the flattening agents sink to the bottom before spraying it, essentially turning it into a "gloss". Then I started wet sanding with 400 grit and worked my way up to 3000 grit, then switched to some car buffing compounds. The sanding part is a pain. The sand paper tends to clog rapidly. If you have the time, it's better to wait a week or more before starting to sand.
Thanks! Do you mind telling me which brand?
Sherwin Williams. I'm not entirely sure what line it is. I get it from a commercial shop that bulk orders it.
very good work. Why do you apply the oil with emery cloth?
It seems to help work it in on the initial coat. After that coat, you're supposed to lightly sand it before applying the next coat, but it always gunks up on me, so I basically wet sand it with the oil. Two steps in one!
@@SpaltedStagStudio thanks for the quick reply
Keep going! These videos are very entertaining
Thank you! We will keep at it!
You need a drum sander! It was a bit of a luxury purchase for me, but I use it daily now.
Oh it's definitely on my list! I'd really like a wide belt sander but those are a bit expensive.
@@SpaltedStagStudio widebelt is cheaper in the long run, they are a lot faster use a lot less paper and they have a lot less time sanding after you run it through
I've also heard it is much better due to the fact it doesn't generate no where near the heat a drum sander does.
@@SpaltedStagStudio they don't and you can get a longer belt, they come in 60 and 75" lengths on some of them and they last a lot longer than the belts on a drum sander. plus you can change the belt in 30 seconds as compared to the aggravation of a drum sander
Great build and even better apron!
What can I say? I'm a sucker for quality tools! Thanks for taking the time to watch.
Perfect upgrade.
What a beautiful humidor!! Does anyone know the name of the bit he's using to notch the wood for the hinges??
I'm mostly doing it with a router plane. Super simple tool, but very accurate!
Man I loved this process, thanks for this posting!
Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Can I buy ?

Well done. A really impressive looking piece!

Beautiful board great video. Have subscribed and will watch more of your videos. Regards James One Handed Maker - Australia
Thanks so much for watching!!
Really like your work. The videos would be so much better without the background music, though.
Really? I always felt like it was too weird between sections with silence. Would it be better with no background noise or maybe just the tools? Either way would be significantly cheaper on my end. Getting access to copyrights is pretty expensive.
Foe sale ?

Absolutely beautiful and great info regarding the build, but I'm pretty sure the bottom right piece is supposed to be white.
I did a bunch of research on regulations, and nothing said anything about that. You are right, though. When I specifically searched it , I found it. I would guess it wasn't clearly stated because with most boards, there is no specified orientation. You can just rotate it 90° if the white is on the wrong side. With mine it kind of has a specified orientation.
Good stuff
Thank you!
I had the same question as Mr. Zombie. Thanks for your explanation. I have built 3 boards 2 foot by 2 foot by 2 inch thick (~3 inch borders). I did the playing field thinner as I had a wide drum sander and glued direct to a plywood base. I also covered the back of the plywood with a veneer. I made my plywood base 1/2 inch bigger all the way around to be a tenon that Inserted into the border. I also inlaid an 1/8 inch brass square strip around the playing field to separate it from the border. I love the shine on your board. I'll have to consider that on the next one I do. And yes, Once you make a clamping jig, you'll love making these.
That sounds great! I'm sure that brass really sets it off. Do you make your own pieces as well?
@@SpaltedStagStudio I just added a 4th axis to my cnc (rotary) and started test cutting. Once I finish dialing it in I'll make custom figurine pieces.
Common now I don't need any more justifications to buy a CNC! Haha
That's beautiful man
Thank you sir!
Looks great. Why don’t you just cut the board squares to be a thinner depth to reduce the chances of wood movement? When you cover it with epoxy it will really minimize chance for moisture expansion.
Doing a veneer style was a thought. However, I really dont have an effective way to get it that thin. If I had a wide belt sander it would have been a much more feasible method. My planer gets a little vicious with thin stock.
Looks awesome!
Thank you very much
Whoa! This is great craftsmanship. Do you make these boxes for customers or is it just for personal use? Impressive!
Thank you kindly! I normally make them for customers. I just did this one for the video, though. I really enjoy working one on one with clients to create custom pieces.
@@SpaltedStagStudio Cool! Where can I find your info to contact you? I’d like to get more info and see about getting one of these beauts on order.

Great and beautiful, where can I buy Spanish cedar?
I get mine from a local hardwood dealer. I'd assume most would carry it. Thankfully, it's pretty light, and you don't need much of it, so if needed, I'm sure you can find it online.
@SpaltedStagStudio thanks, i am in UAE, and I tried Amazon, only thin lists and small pieces available.
I wish I could be more help, unfortunately I'm not familiar with other areas. I feel like ordering online is going to be very expensive. I'm privileged enough that most things are readily available at dealers near me.
@SpaltedStagStudio Thank you, dear Sir, and Merry Christmas to you. I have a lot of friends in the USA and Canada who can buy for me, if you have any adeess or contact that I can use, it will be greatly appreciated.
Merry Christmas to you as well! Sorry for the late reply. I personally use a place called Kencraft in Toledo, Ohio. I think your best bet would get ahold of your friends and have them check their local hardwood dealers. It's a fairly common species, so I would think most are gonna carry it or at least be able to order it for you.
So you can make a humidor box out of any wood as long as it’s lined with cedar?
Thats my opinion, yes. I' have made a few of these, and all of them have held the moisture content very well so far.
What were the two things on the inside of the lid?
The guage Hygrometer and the other piece is a humidifier. You can just add a couple of drop of water to it and increase the humidity a bit.
At the beginning of the video you mentioned how quickly CA glue glues fingers together because of their moisture content. I was hoping you would try water.
That's a really good point. It would of been interesting to test using water since pH affects the cure time of the glue. So, theoretically, alkaline water should dry the glue much faster than acidic water.
Good information Justin. We'll done.
Thanks for your support!
you spent 18 mins showing us how you made this beauty but only 14 seconds showcasing it. you did great work. you should show it off a lil more =)
Thank you! We are still learning the whole video recording thing. I will definitely make sure I do a better job at showcasing the projects though!
Doing some amazing work over there, absolutely stunning table, well done
Thank you very much!
explain to me the saw blade you used during the period of cutting dados and miters. Silver blade with very large gullets. Explain why you like that blade please.
It's a 24 flat tooth freud. I also have a CMT from Katz-Moses that works just as well. Generally low tooth count with large gullet is for ripping. It gives the saw dust plenty of room to be ejected. In this particular case, I use it for its flat teeth. Allot of blades have alternating points, which leave an uneven dado/rabbit. Flat teeth give you a much smoother finish. These two blades are very high quality. They last a long time and have thicker carbide teeth so when they do dull you can have them sharpened.
I like what I have seen so far 🤗 Subbed to see more. 😊 I have been debating on making one of these for my home. We have such limited counter space i feel it would be useful. The only thing in this video that kept throwing me was the pronunciation of Forstner bits. Is it an accent? Tamar from 3x3 Custom says ‘drawer’ in such a way it kind of throws me but she is from the NE US so understandable. Just was curious 😊
Thanks for watching! It definitely did save us some counter space. Haha I can't blame my speech on accent, unfortunately. I just can't talk. Normally, I catch things in post, but I didn't even realize that one. Add it to my mispronounced list with wenge!
@@SpaltedStagStudio I honestly thought it was accent related so it’s all good! We all have issues with certain wood names… Padauk, Sapele, Jatoba, Macore… so all is good 😊
Thank you for sharing - Excellent video, box looks great. Enjoying your channel, from Australia!
Thanks for watching! It's so mind-blowing to me to have people so far tuning in!!

great video my friend. Love the apron!
Thank you very much for watching! Yeah, you can definitely tell the designer of the apron is a woodworker!
He only works with the absolute best!
Great project , a few tips from a lifelong bespoke humidor producer, no need for dominos in you’re long grain glue up , just quality pva glue, also no need to “pre soak” you’re edge joint. Spanish cedar is the standard for humidors( it’s actually a mahogany species), always wear a respirator as the dust is nasty on the lungs. when edge banding try 3m luthiers tape, it has elasticity to apply clamping pressure . We never clamp edge banding.
Thanks for the tips! I really need to get better about wearing my respirator around the Spanish cedar. I tend to overuse my domino, but I gotta justify the purchase somehow haha.
Hello, we are going to make a new Humidor and we don't have much information about it. Can we do this using nails and any wood glue or will these damage the cigars? We have 18mm thick cedar wood and we will not put extra cedar wood in it. We will cover the outside with 5mm mahogany leaves. Our aim is only to preserve the cigars at a very good level, we are not interested in aesthetic appearance. Could you please inform us about how we should do it?
Great-the only problem is your smoke box looks like a chest X-ray.
Hahaha. I didn't see that! I feel like bookmatches are like ink blot tests. It's interesting to hear what people see in them.
👍👍👍👍👍
What magnets are you using? I'm having a tough time finding ones I like
1"x 1/2" neodynium disk magnets. I think I got them of Amazon.
great tip on the backer piece for the sled.
Thanks! I definitely messed a couple cuts before I came up with that lol.
Great Project . I enjoy seeing mistakes. Because it let's me see that even YoubTubers aren't Perfect ! I do have a question. Wouldn't it have just been easier to cut off the stubborn dowel then sand and put a dowel on the other side ? My thinking is no damaged tenon and everything still looks as it should . I'm just a newbie asking questions.
Well, since I broke it, I guess that would have been an easier solution. That center pin is what really holds everything tight and centered. The outer ones just hold it against the other board but still allow for seasonal movement, so I was worried about it moving to much back and forth without that pin, though thr glue prolly would have held it just fine once that dried.
Thanks for the reply at 59 I'm still learning and looking for ways to keep my mind active and occupied. I was always told and taught to ask questions and if you didn't makes mistakes your not doing anything.
Exactly! "A master has failed more than the apprentice has tried." I love hearing suggestions! Sometimes, when we do something enough, I feel like our brains lock up a bit and we need some outside perspective.
Nice box, where did you get the humidor kit?
Thank you! I found them on Amazon.
Say, ..That book match appears to capture The Ascension Of Christ! Think I’ll have another glass of wine….😅
I always feel like I'm at the shrink looking at it haha!
My Bestie takeaway was 17 coats of lacquer….. I tend to be a bit stingy and self rushed on finishing but I’m going to smarten up.
It took me more than a few ruined finishes to do so myself haha. I'm a very impatient person, so it's a work in progress.
@@SpaltedStagStudio the voice of experience must be listened to…..

You don’t need clamps for the corner banding, blue tape works fine.
Yeah, it did seem to hold it just fine, I just have a hard time entrusting a project to a couple of pieces of painters tape.
Excellent craftsmanship
