Converting Niles rocker switches to LED for Nissan W/D21
This is how I replaced the lights in the Niles rocker switches in my '93 Pathfinder's dashboard. The same switches were used in the Hardbody pickups, and probably other makes/models as well.
I may redo this video later showing more color options. All I had when I did this was two flavors of white. This particular switch should've gotten a red LED, but I didn't have one on hand at the time.
These switches are fragile, and some of them may be tricky to source replacements for, so work carefully and consider having spares on hand for the important ones in case you break something.

WD21 Pathfinder Rear Wheel Bearings (Disk, H233B)

The service manual shows how to do this job if you've got all the special tools Nissan dealers had in the 90s. Here's how I managed without them. Keep in mind I'm just a guy in a shed, and this is not necessarily the right way to do any of this. This video does not cover the wheel bearings used in the drum-brake WD21 Pathfinder and D21 pickup. I'm told the bearings in the R50/D22/WD22 are simil...

The project returns! The suspension gets an overhaul, two dipsticks are identified, and temporary fixes become permanent as the V8 Triumph returns to the road. This special extended-length episode was brought to you by a dying capacitor in my Macbook, which caused more kernel panics than a mass hysteria event in a cornfield and prevented me from editing video until I got around to fixing it.

Rebuilding a Vise Jaw

In a previous video, I welded the cast-iron movable jaw of this Samson vise back together. I knew cast iron didn't weld very well, but thought I'd give it a go anyway. It held for a while, but ended up breaking again, right next to where I'd welded it. I'm done with that jaw. Let's see if I can make a new one out of stouter stuff.
Fixing a leaky drain plug without draining the oil

I reused the copper washer on the oil drain plug of this '63 Scout one time too many. I needed to replace it, but I wasn't about to drain six quarts of new oil if I could help it. Turning the truck upside down wasn't an option, either. Here's what I did. Huge thanks to AvE for the tip. And once again, no, do not try this with your gas tank, all that'll get you is a fire.
Easy fix: Bionaire BCH9214RE Heater

This is a quick video on what went wrong in a small heater that quit working following a power failure. A zener diode in the power supply was blown out. I suspect electrical noise (arcing) in the mains when the power cut out caused the capacitive dropper power supply to pass more current than the diode could handle. A new diode was all it took to get this thing back in service. This isn't a wal...

Cheap Fix for a Buzzing Kenwood Heater

Does your Kenwood heater do nothing but buzz when you plug it in? As always, wrench at your own risk. If you're not comfortable working on electronics,...

The Dumbest Problem I've Ever Had With A Car
I don't know how many times I said to myself this job should be easy 7 hrs later and after a lot of cursing I was done, the R50 Pathfinders / WD21 will always make a 30 mins job take 7 hrs 🤣🤣
And even a true 30 minute job is one stripped fastener away from taking days!
Same as the last guy, the extra at the end was PFC. I can also appreciate the way a little electrical thing in your pathfinder turns into a much longer day/days. I’m in the middle of one now, and the last time I went down this rabbit hole I gave my 94 SE away. Now doing it again on my current 94 SE. Yes it really is 2024 when I say this.
Cool project and great work around. Out of interest, when your cars brake lights are on as well as the indicators, the trailer and car lights flash 180 degrees out of synchronisation... is this typical for all 5-4 converters in North America? (sorry, I am in Australia and all cars and trailers use amber turn signals)
Thanks! AFAIK, yes, they're all like this. To avoid that effect, the converter would have to know the difference between the flasher being off between flashes and the flasher being off in general, which would be difficult without running additional wires. IMO the back-and-forth flashing is more eye-catching anyway, which is what you want in a turn signal. Separate turn signals are a much better idea. Unfortunately this four-wire setup is standard on trailers over here, with the exception of the big chungus ones on semi trucks.
Can you share with me where you got the head gasket parts from? Canada or USA? Cheers
It's been long enough that I don't remember, sorry. I think it was a US seller. I know I ordered online, that's about as much as I remember.
Wow a guy that really knows what he is doing and shares it. What a absolutely awesome video, it works and works great, had this issue on my ford escape with factory trailer package. Great job, awesome video. This was great. Thanks
Glad it helped!
My Grandparents had those same plates
Thank you! I had the same heater, same problem. Your step-by-step instructions were right on the money. My heater is back up and running now. 5 bucks for the capacitor is a way better deal than $100+ for a replacement unit. And this was the first time I touched a soldering iron in 40 years! I had to cut the hinge off the second two sets of clips to get the board out, but with 2 screws and 2 clips it works just fine.
Thanks............idk you could purchase convertor boxes ... :)
Wow, thank you for this GREAT video!
Thank you so much for this video! I ordered a bag of capacitors and a cheap soldering kit and fixed my 10+ year-old Kenwood right up! I'm thrilled to have it running properly again.

The comments written in Russian are easier to decipher. If you mean the wheel wobbles, that could be a bent rim, bent axle shaft, or something stuck between the wheel and rotor, or rotor and axle shaft, that shouldn't be there, causing the wheel to sit cockeyed.

Hi there. I appreciate your videos. I recently got a used one like your dad's. Everything seems to work except it makes a screeching sound after a minute or so and continues until i get annoyed and turn it off. Sounds like the fan. I've got the cover off now is there anyway to fix this myself?
Sounds like dry bearings on the fan motor. A drop of oil on each should do it. 3-in-one, car engine oil, pretty much whatever's handy that isn't WD40 or chassis grease should do the trick. If they're really bad, you may need to take the whole thing apart and clean up the shafts with a Scotchbrite pad or similar.
Amazing!
I laughed the whole video.
This was very good infromation on this fix. i brought the parts and now the space heater is working. It is heating up as i type this thank note
Is there any fire risk if heater is making this noise? Thanks
I don't think so, but I don't recommend leaving any appliance plugged in unsupervised when it's not working properly.

Has any of your bolts flew out because you didn’t lock tite them?
Nope. I usually take the faces back off and retorque the hub bolts after they've had a few days to settle in, same as I do for lug nuts. After that, they stay tight.
I wonder, if you had an LED rated for 12v, whether the little block could be dissasembled cleanly enough to reuse. If not, maybe you could 3D print a little adapter to just slide on like factory.
LEDs need to be current limited so there's not really a "12v rated" LED without an integrated resistor or some other current regulator. Could probably put together a PCB to mount the LED and limit current somehow in the proper form factor, but wiring it up manually as seen in this video seems fine too.
@@moofree Ah, that's true. I just remembered getting an LED replacement kit for a car radio that was basically just a pack of LEDs that were labeled 12v. The radio itself was likely limiting current in that case.
@@tigerproductions4 12v LEDs are a thing! Digikey has a few flavors of them. I assume the resistor is integrated. Doesn't look like they have warm white, and the brightness looks a little low compared to similar 3v LEDs. That's probably what the radio kit used, though. And the rubber block is reusable, the leads on the old bulb are just wrapped around it. The LED would be facing the wrong way, but a little trimming and bending would fix that. Not a bad idea!
when is your audio books? great voice.
I had to also modify on/off switch becuase it was not actually hardware on/off, flashlight was permanently under voltage and switch was just a button to change modes, which is totaly stupid because it consumes electricity even when it's turned off. Why are today producers doint such stupid products? Why can't be things just logicaly made?
Did exactly what you said and bridged those 2 points with a piece of wire and its perfect now. Bypassed all modes and just stays on full brightness now. I did it to spotlights for my motorcycle.
You did the right thing, nice job 👍
I have the opposite issue, being in Europe and having a US classic car I'm allowed to have US-spec lights on a car, that is this brake light and indicator combination lights are done by one red bulb, while to attach to normal trailer I have to somehow divide these functions.
Yeah, that's a tricky one. I don't think there's a simple circuit to break the US combo wiring back down into the euro style. I would run wires from the brake switch and the turn signal switch (or front turn signals, if those are separate), and then run those back to the Euro trailer connector.
It appears many of these flashlights are using a mosfet transistor such as a 2n7002 housed within an SOT-32 package. The transistor is SOURCE grounded and the GATE is controlled. The LED obtains its ground signal from the DRAIN of the transistor. When the LED ground wire is moved from the DRAIN to the SOURCE of the transistor - this essentially bypasses that transistor and the LED is permanently connected to ground. Thanks for this video!!
how's it holding up. (?) 😕😕😒
Last I heard it's still on the road.
I was given a near mint garage kept one of these recently. Pers like a kitten
Glad I found this! QUESTION: how do I know if the belts work besides braking or accelerating really hard? We drive a motorhome and those situations are uncomfortable to test 😅 they don't lock when you pull them out quickly like modern ones, do they?
I don't remember if they did the pull-to-lock, sorry. If you can access the belt reel, you could unbolt it from the cab, tip it by hand to simulate G forces, and see if that locks it up. Be careful if it's a newer rig, though--it may have seat belt pretensioners tied to the airbag system. Maybe disconnect the battery first on the off chance you piss off a yaw sensor and make the system assume there's been a crash. Failing that, I guess you could park on a hill at various angles to see if that makes them lock--but I imagine that would also create an uncomfortable situation. Good luck!
Great tractors. Mine is still running strong. Had to change the tires as the originals finally gave out.
This one's still running strong too! Fired right up this spring after sitting all winter.

It is said to have a very interesting and complex technology. If it were produced today, such a TV would be much more expensive than LCD and LED TVs. I can't even imagine the cost of production during the years it was produced
Gonna be building this myself for my 1983 GMC 7000. I like LOTS of lights on my trailers, and 7.5a isnt much capacity when using a Hopkins converter!! Any idea how to make the signals stay in sync with the car when brakes are on??
You could light up a trailer like one of those Japanese dekotora trucks with this setup! The counter-flashing is baked into the circuit, but I'll bet you could rig another relay to each stop/turn wire that inverts the signal back, then set those relays up so they only work when the truck's brake lights are on. Basically re-invert the inverted signal, when it's inverted, so it's not inverted anymore. Is both flashing together a requirement where you live? I don't mind the counterflash, honestly I think it draws a little more attention to the trailer (if it's small enough that the truck's tails are visible).
Use transistors instead of relays and add diodes
Good job sir.

I have a Bionaire ceramic swivel heater BCH9212R-U and it works great, one day I turn it on because the remote was not working it needed a new battery. I must of pushes a different button now the numbers don't light up like they use to. Is very light. Do you if you can give me an idea of how to fix it. Thanks.
Might have different brightness modes? I haven't worked with that model, but you can probably find an owner's manual for it online that would explain how to set the display brightness, if that's an option on that unit.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have been looking for the wiring connection information on the same model and this was very helpful. My issue was it would not turn on at all and I found that the Transformer (24 VA/2VA -2ndry) was the issue. You are a good man!

Thank You, had (2) similar units (Kenwood EW6708K) One would just click rapidly and not heat, the other one had no display but the heat would turn on. Replaced the Capacitor, 470uF, 35V, 105C in each unit. And they now both are working properly again. FYI my bad Capacitors looked fine before replacing with the new ones.
That's the same as a delonghi heater, but without the good chassis...
Great video! Another Kenwood carries on thanks to your clear instruction and a 30 cent replacement capacitor. Prospective repairers be warned that two of those non-screw fastener clips will test your will to carry on. After unclipping the easy two, I kept them unclipped with a piece of 1/4” dowel and worked with needle nose pliers and a screw driver to free one of the difficult clips. With it freed, the last one was relatively easy to unclip. Be mindful of which screw came from where and it’s pretty much clear sailing. Cheers!
You should have known that oil was going to come out
The LCD display panel in BCH9212R unit has become too dim to read from more than a few inches away. Any suggestions on the cause or how to repair? Otherwise unit works fine. Thanks in advance.
Haven't run into that one, sorry. It's not a bright display to begin with. Might check the voltage across the backlight LEDs if you can get to them easily. If the issue is contrast rather than brightness, could be the LCD itself isn't getting full power for some reason. Good luck!
I am having the same problem. Display has become very dim.
