Easy fix: Bionaire BCH9214RE Heater

- This is a quick video on what went wrong in a small heater that quit working following a power failure. A zener diode in the power supply was blown out. I suspect electrical noise (arcing) in the mains when the power cut out caused the capacitive dropper power supply to pass more current than the diode could handle. A new diode was all it took to get this thing back in service.
This isn't a walkthrough; I just found something I hadn't expected and figured I'd make a video in case someone else is troubleshooting a similar failure.
Thanks for the hints! I found my 24V Zener had failed shorted.
Well I watched your video mine wouldn't start so I saw you tipped it.over I did the same nothing then I gave it a harder drop now it works thanks
LMAO. Same. My light was not solid, but blinking. I tipped it over one way on my hardwood floor. Nada. Tipped it on the hardwood floor on the other side, worked like a champ again. Thanks for the inspiration of abusing my equipment! :)
haha same here! now it works like nothing happened!
Thank you for this comment- I did just that and it works LOL
How do you fix if the heater is not working in the bionaire
I saw the responses to a previous if it’s the element can
That be replaced
Hi there. I appreciate your videos. I recently got a used one like your dad's. Everything seems to work except it makes a screeching sound after a minute or so and continues until i get annoyed and turn it off. Sounds like the fan. I've got the cover off now is there anyway to fix this myself?
Sounds like dry bearings on the fan motor. A drop of oil on each should do it. 3-in-one, car engine oil, pretty much whatever's handy that isn't WD40 or chassis grease should do the trick. If they're really bad, you may need to take the whole thing apart and clean up the shafts with a Scotchbrite pad or similar.
I have a Bionaire ceramic swivel heater BCH9212R-U and it works great, one day I turn it on because the remote was not working it needed a new battery. I must of pushes a different button now the numbers don't light up like they use to. Is very light. Do you if you can give me an idea of how to fix it. Thanks.
Might have different brightness modes? I haven't worked with that model, but you can probably find an owner's manual for it online that would explain how to set the display brightness, if that's an option on that unit.
Hi, how do I fix my bionaire BCH9212 tower heater/fan?? I took it apart to clean it and put it back together. It comes on for a few seconds or so but cuts off!!! Help!!!!
I'd check the tilt switch first. I don't remember if it's open for stuff to get in, but if it is you might've pushed some dust into it, which is making it think it's on its side. Another comment here suggests you may need to smack it around a little to get the ball moving. If it's not that, open it up again and make sure any plugs you messed with are properly seated and the wiring didn't get pinched when you put the case back together. Good luck!
I have one of these that has stopped working (different symptoms) and am unable to find disassembly instructions anywhere. I have all seven screws I can find out but the two parts of the case won't budge.
It's not uncommon to have to do a little prying to get cases apart. I don't remember there being a special trick to this unit, but that was a while ago.
Could I pull out the whole ball bearing thing since mine is in one spot.and screwed down? That seemed to be my heaters issue is the ball bearing.
Interesting question. Depends on how the ball bearing safety works. I assume it's optical, so just removing the component probably wouldn't do it. If the optical part is the problem, it may be difficult to spoof. Might take some research there. If it's a mechanical issue where the ball is stuck or something, that would be easier to bypass.
The LCD display panel in BCH9212R unit has become too dim to read from more than a few inches away. Any suggestions on the cause or how to repair? Otherwise unit works fine. Thanks in advance.
Haven't run into that one, sorry. It's not a bright display to begin with. Might check the voltage across the backlight LEDs if you can get to them easily. If the issue is contrast rather than brightness, could be the LCD itself isn't getting full power for some reason. Good luck!
I am having the same problem.
Display has become very dim.
I have a Bionaire Silent Micathermic that has a failed start 1/0 button. Is there a way to repair this? Thanks in advance
I'm not familiar with that model. If it feels like the button's bound up, you might be able to fix that just by taking the control panel apart and freeing up the button (might just be wedged or something). If that doesn't do it, the switch itself might be bad. If it's a soft pad type contact (like most TV remotes), you can clean the contacts with alcohol and usually get them going again. Other types may require component replacement. Good luck!
My Bionaire turns on for a few seconds and then stop heating with a red power red light flickering. It keeps happening a few times. Do you know how to fix it?
No idea, but I'd check the tip-over sensor inside (with the rattling ball in it). Could be that it thinks it's on its side for some reason, though I'm not sure what would go wrong with that system. If the flashing looks like Morse code, it may be some form of trouble code; I have no idea if these units do that but some older cars/trucks do that. Good luck!
The part 1N52318 5V Zener Diode which I found on eBay but I can’t find where in back that look like it, I know you said it not the same. Thank
Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking.
My heater just stopped working and I came across your video about this. I found the part that need to replace but I can't find where the old one. thank
@@honthai3599 You're looking for where the diode is on the board? I've got that pointed out at 2:41, it's between the LCD screen and the electrolytic cap. Make sure you get it in the right way around (the stripe on the diode indicates polarity). Good luck!
Mine works fine as far as emitting heat but it is not oscillating. Any ideas?
The oscillation function is its own motor inside IIRC. Could be the motor's not working, the linkage is jammed, the switch that's supposed to turn it on and off has worn out, or the relay on the circuit board that controls the oscillation isn't working. Check for power at the motor (or unplug it and power it directly). If the motor's not getting power, I would check the button next, make sure it's got continuity when the button's pressed but not when it isn't. If that checks out, try and work out which pins under the relay are the coil, and see if that's getting power. If the relay coil is getting power but it's not connecting power to the motor, the relay's borked.
Stupid me. I didnt push the right button
Hi, Thanks for the video, I have the same type of heater as yours, but my heater doesn't blow the hot air out, it only blew out the cold air, may I know what could be the problems?
Thanks

I would check for thermal fuses that might've popped and cut power to the heating element. Could also be a bad relay or element.
@@Darwinpasta Thanks, sure, I will use the DMM to check the fuse connectivity, do you know where is the fuse located approximately?
@@ALEXSHUNCAI Don't remember, sorry. Might show up somewhere in the video, assuming this model has one. I'd expect to find it somewhere near the heating element itself.
Should have shown how to open up the unit
How did you open the back cover?
It's been long enough that I honestly don't remember! Usually a screw at one end and a tab at the other, unless you're talking about the cover with the stupid plastic clips.
Remove the 4 screws at the top, then 3 at the bottom.
I used a small/thin flathead screwdriver to slide in to where the two pieces join. Then gently turned it like a key as I went around its entirety.
Any idea how to fix the LCD on these?
Depends on what's wrong with it. If it's physically messed up then you're gonna need parts. If it's just not turning on, I would check that it's getting power.
@@Darwinpasta Thanks for the response. Everything else works perfectly. Just no DISPLAY. Any idea where to get a replacement LCD?
@@melissarij8687 Common bits like temp switches are usually off-the-shelf and widely available, but model-specific stuff like the LCD may be harder to track down, if it's available at all. I would try ereplacementparts on the off chance they've got anything for this model. Good luck!
