Parking Brake System | ඔටෝ ගියර් පාකින් හරියටම කරමු
Vehicle parking braking system is designed to keep a vehicle stationary when parked. It typically works by locking the wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. There are several types of parking brake systems, each with its own mechanism and advantage.
1. Mechanical Handbrake system
• Operation - Activated by pulling a lever located between the front seats or under the dashboard.
• Mechanism - Engages a cable that runs to the rear brakes, applying pressure to the brake shoes or pads.
• Advantages - Simple design, easy to use, and reliable.
2. Foot-Operated Parking Brake system
• Operation - Activated by pressing a pedal located on the floor near the driver's side.
• Mechanism - Similar to the handbrake, it uses a steel cable to apply the rear brakes.
• Advantages - Frees up space in the center console area and can be easier to engage.
3. Electric Parking Brake (EPB) system
• Operation - Activated by pressing a button or switch.
• Mechanism: Uses electronic controls to engage the rear brakes, often with an electric motor.
• Advantages - Convenient, integrates with other vehicle systems, can offer features like automatic engagement when the car is parked.
4. Hydraulic Parking Brake system
• Operation - Usually found in larger or more specialized vehicles.
• Mechanism - Uses the vehicle’s hydraulic brake system to lock the rear wheels.
• Advantages - Can provide a stronger braking force, suitable for heavy vehicles.
Components of a Parking Brake System
1. Brake Lever or Pedal - The part you physically engage to activate the parking brake.
2. Cables - In mechanical systems, these connect the lever or pedal to the brakes.
3. Actuators - In electronic systems, these are motors or solenoids that apply the brake system.
4. Brake Shoes or Pads - The components that make contact with the brake drum or disc to hold the vehicle.
5. Control Module - In electronic systems, this manages the operation of the parking brake system.
Maintenance and Common Issues of parking brake
• Cable Adjustment - Over time, the cables can stretch and may need adjusting to ensure the brake holds properly.
• Wear and Tear - Brake shoes or pads can wear out and may need replacing.
• Electronic Malfunctions - In EPB systems, electronic components can fail and may need diagnostic and repair.
Advantages of Modern Parking Brake Systems
• Safety - Prevents the vehicle from rolling, especially on slope area.
• Convenience - Electrical systems offer easier engagement and integration with vehicle controls.
• Space Saving - Foot-operated and electric systems free up cabin space.
Understanding the type and mechanism of your vehicle’s parking brake is essential for proper use and maintenance, ensuring your vehicle remains safely parked when not in use.
