    2. Valve Issues - If the intake or exhaust valves are not sealing properly, either due to wear, damage, or buildup of carbon, they can leak compression out of the cylinder.
    3. Head Gasket Failure - A blown head gasket can lead to compression loss between cylinders or into the cooling system and coolant loss and overheating.
    4. Cracked Cylinder Head or Block - A crack of the cylinder head or engine block can lead to significant compression loss and is often terminal, requiring extensive repairs or engine replacement.
    5. Worn or Damaged Cylinder Walls - Cylinder walls can become scratched or worn, which disrupts the seal between the piston and the cylinder wall.
    Diagnosing Low Compression
    To diagnose low compression, a mechanic will typically perform a compression test using a compression gauge. This test involves inserting the gauge into the spark plug hole (or injector hole of diesel engines) and cranking the engine to measure the pressure built up by the piston of the cylinder. A leak-down test might also be conducted to determine where the compression is being lost (e.g., through the valves, piston rings, or elsewhere).
    Solutions for Low Engine Compression
    1. Replacing Piston Rings - If piston rings are worn out, replacing them (along with a complete engine overhaul) can restore compression.
    2. Valve Repair or Replacement - Repairing or replacing damaged or worn valves, and resurfacing the valve seats, can improve compression if valves are the issues.
    3. Head Gasket Replacement - If a blown head gasket is causing compression loss, replacing the gasket is necessary, which can be labor-intensive but crucial for restoring engine function.
    4. Engine Rebuild or Replacement - In cases of severe damage like cracked cylinder heads or blocks, or extensively worn cylinder walls, a full engine rebuild or replacement should be the best solution.
    Preventative Maintenance
    To help protect low engine compression, real maintenance of the engine is essential. This includes timely oil changes, keeping the cooling system in good working order, and ensuring the engine is running with the correct fuel and air mixture. Regular check-ups can catch issues like valve carbon build-up.
