I just recently ordered a new cassette just for the reason of tackling hills. Got my bike second hand and it came with a 21 tooth low gear which has been killing me on the inclines. Looking forward to not having to go into the red with anything more than a 5% gradient

I don’t think a 38x52 drivetrain is needed at all. I’m 65 years old and I still can climb double digit grades with my gravel bike. I have a Specialized Diverge with a 42x11-42 drivetrain running stock wheels and 700x42 tires. I’m sure there out there, but I have yet to find a hill I couldn’t climb. My cadence slows down to 70 and my speed to around 6 mph on big climbs, but I’m okay with it. I don’t have to stop at the top to recover for a minute either. My conditioning is good, but ordinary for anyone who cycles year round. Just my opinion. I enjoy the videos!

I personally think the handlebar is not yet done evolving. Alt bars have a long way to go, to split the difference between “flat” vs “drop”. Electronic shifting means the ability to shift from multiple hand positions and cross style in-line sequential brake levers could also allow for braking from multiple hand positions. I think the bullhorn bar should make a comeback!

The core of Alfine 8 need to do a oil bath every year or 5000km, but I found out about this after 12 years and god knows how many km of riding in SE Asia rain. The same hub still works great , and rides even better since it no longer work by thick grease after first oil bath.

This is utter nonsense, yes the gearing makes a difference, but if you lower your gears to the point that it makes cycling up hill easy enough to 'feel' as easy as riding flat, you are going to be cycling so slowly that you begin expending more and more energy balancing and steering. Your opening claim is totally and utterly incorrect. Torque is a thing, the weight of a human and the length of pedals is finite and it DEFINITELY expends more energy riding up hill than it does riding flat. Yes you can make it easier than the average bike set up allows, but that's about it.

History moves in a spiral and all the events of history are repeated. So trending for gravel will end. It's not that good as they said.

Sorry, this is idiotic. What you're saying is that you can slow down, to keep to some energy output as going on a flat. It doesn't help you much though, if you have to actually get somewhere, not just cycle for the sake of cycling.

I think this especially starts to make a lot of sense today with electrically assisted bicycles. You already have the motor, so If you can have a fairly efficient generator, then you can get rid of the chain and the gears entirely, which means less wear and thus less maintenance. You can choose yourself how much power you want to put into the system vs. how much the battery delivers, and this way, you could increase your range, probably significantly. I own an electric bicycle, which only has a rotation sensor and no gears. This means that it won't let me invest any of my own energy. I only have to move my legs to activate the motor which does all the work for me. The only reason the chain is there is to get me of the line. It has a range of 40 km but I'm noticing a significant and exponential power decrease after 20 km. Being able to deliver extra power with a generator could make a huge difference there I feel. This way you can still have your workout whenever you want without a chain or belt. This could really simplify electric bicycles. Add regenerative braking and it even starts making more sense!

Is it possible to create a 3 or 4 person bicycle frame, seated like a small car, where each person can pedal to contribute to the ride like a tandem bike, and what would that sprocket system look like so that that particular bicycle would be able to easily reach up to 45 mph...?

A HUGE benefit will be the increased freedom of design, without to worry over chains/belts/mechanical hubs etc. ESPECIALLY in the three wheel bikes for the disabled....🙂

You know theres this thing called gravity. Its a constant force going down. If you're climbing a gradient then the force of gravity starts to pull you back as its not a direct downward force. This resistsnce means you need to counter it with energy. Its basic thermodynamics...
