Quad City Challenger Crash At Oshkosh EAA AirVenture (2018)
N1666R, July 23, 2018, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Injuries: 1 None
The airplane was landing on the ultralight field when the accident occurred. The pilot stated that she made a wide base to final turn because she was unsure about the placement of the runway. Although the pilot added power, the airplane entered a left descending turn until the left wing contacted the ground near the beginning of the runway’s displaced threshold. The airplane then spun left and slid rearward on the ground until it contacted a chain-link fence.
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical anomalies with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation. The pilot’s statement, along with a ground-based video of the accident, revealed that the pilot failed to maintain adequate airspeed and exceeded the airplane’s critical angle of attack during the base to final turn, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall.
Probable Cause: The pilot’s failure to maintain adequate airspeed during the base to final turn and his exceedance of the airplane’s critical angle of attack, which resulted in an aerodynamic stall.

Even just wathcing the video, I could not see those power lines! They should have had balls on them so pilot can easily see and avoid them. I have been a pilot for over 57 years and can sympathize with this poor pilot. I might have had the same thing happen to me.
That's one way of getting out of an annual inspection.
Yeah, that's gonna leave a mark.
How? Why? So much dumb I can't process it.
Knew a guy that had a C180 that made an approach over some power lines and the mains cleared by some miracle but the tail wheel caught, pulled about 15 knots off the speed and snapped the castoring tail wheel off the rod and flung it God knows where.
What in heaven's name are powerlines doing right across an airport approach path? I would send the bill to the power company responsible for putting those likes where they did.
Who is this fellow “Duke Power” and why do they want his balls attached to the power line?
LOL WTF WERE THEY THINKING
Source of original video?
Never mind. It's an EAA video.
Practice those maneuver with R/C first
well that was a ah chit moment.
Who was more disturbed, the guy flying or the guy tenting?
Stick to boating.
This vid was clipped
Took a lot of skill to land backwards.
Que coisa nao!
I hate it when pilots blame perfectly good airplanes for their screw ups.
A bigger field and there might not have even been any damage!
Lets hear it for the Fence Guy! That shit worked!
Flying beyond their abilty. Poor pattern work.
Interesting...she has 300 hours in this make/model alone, and almost 1000 total hours in different aircraft. And sill makes such a silly mistake.
HER ability. It was a woman, not a crowd.
Like a glove!
The mount attached to the yoke is an incident waiting to happen too. @01:13
Looks like one wing stalled while the other was in ground effect.
Don't see a lot of aileron or rudder.
because when you are stalled that makes it worse.
The cause of this event has been determined to be a loose nut behind the controls.
Pilot handled it like a boss
A passenger-boss perhaps?
Except for the part in the video where he crashed.
@@stejer211 She.
@@saito125 Now you're being sexist. Everyone knows that women never crash.
(Handled it like a boss) ? You must be kidding, right? Poor judgement and pilot skills. Too slow, too much bank, too low to recover.
Oddly a smooth crash
Handled like a boss
I'd call it 50/50 on fault, seems like seeing an aircraft on the runway that you had no knowledge of at an uncontrolled airport is a FINE time to go around
Landing upside down is never a good thing. 😮
Seems a dumb place to have a powerline, right near the runway threshold.
Now where is that godang user manual
Short coupled nasty little plane with heel brakes. It was alway a handful.
Fix tho video, Bro. Let a couple seconds go before starting the video. It's hard to even pause on the text.
Why didn't he use the whole ramp? Looks like he has no clue what he is doing.
It’s Lake Isabella. Forgot the A at the end
The real crazy part is he could probably taxi it to the hanger like that. Talk about a short field landing. Holy Moly. Those airframes are tough.
Must have really small feet
Holy crap, that pilot is seriously lucky that when he got flipped around, the rear fuselage took most of the impact and crumpled.
right rudder.... Hope it had shoulder harnesses... WAS a, nice plane.
One more piece of history gone
The dummy panicked and didnt pop out more flaps at Vr. I did that many times as Bush pilot and CFI.
First I thought the pedestrian caused the crash, but no, the pilot was hunting the poor daywalker... 😆 Years ago we had a similar accident on our little airstrip with a C172 where a new licensed pilot lost control during landing, gaved full throttle, flew in a few feets above our heads, after that stalled and crashed on the end of the runway. The three occupants inside where only slightly injured, but the C172 was a total...
Wasted a perfectly good airplane.
Back in the 70's and 80"s my small town airfield had a flight school, sailplanes and tow aircraft, as well as a state funded aviation and technical college. There was a cafeteria, dormitory and students from around the world including a Saudi Prince(Faisel) who had a helicopter painted like the one on Magnum P.I., and he had a habit of flying and landing where ever he wanted. It was not only uncontrolled, it was out of control. However, I don't recall a single fatal mishap during that time, or since. There have been plenty of ground loops, hard landings, near misses and the occasional midnight drug trafficking drop off for the mayor, but that's about it.
Occasional you say?
Fancy flying buddy. Might wanna find a new hobby?
Dead calm, the wind sock was pointing straight to the earths core so he must have tried really hard to screw things up!
Had a perfectly good lake right there to take off from. This doesn't make sense. ?
What can you say,,,l would suggest try a different hobbie
Best quality videoing I have ever seen, Vaseline on the lens doesn't help.
