- On December 30, 2021, about 1514 central standard time, a J&J Ultralights Seawing, N285SW, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Golden, Missouri. The noncertificated pilot sustained fatal injuries. The aircraft was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight.
The noncertificated pilot departed on his first flight in his recently purchased weight-shift control (WSC) aircraft. After takeoff, the pilot made a steep left bank turn that included a rapid climb and descent. The pilot leveled the aircraft and made a second steep bank turn with a rapid climb, then the aircraft entered a dive and impacted a house. The wings, empennage, and fuselage sustained substantial damage. A postaccident examination revealed no evidence of any mechanical malfunctions or failures that would have precluded normal operation.
The pilot completed two flights in a different WSC aircraft about 6 months before the accident. According to the previous owner, the accident aircraft stalled more abruptly than other WSC aircraft and a substantial amount of altitude was required to recover from a stall.
Although toxicology testing indicated the pilot used cannabis at some point before the accident flight, the detected blood levels could not be used to infer the level of impairment. Based on the circumstances of the accident, the effect of cannabis usage was determined not to be a likely factor in the accident.
Probable Cause: The noncertificated pilot's failure to maintain aircraft control while aggressively maneuvering at low altitude

just looking at that thing is scary
Act like a hot dog, end up as a hot dog.
Just so typical of “what you don’t know” applied to aviation. If it looks simple to the layperson, it’s because the trained pilot is making careful decisions based on an understanding of flight - the ignorant will assume it’s because flying IS simple and will “have a go”. That mentality is very hard to combat through regulation, some of which disproportionately affect pilots with appropriate training.
Stalling is overlooked, so underrespected.
"It's great, you don't even need a pilot's license to fly it."
it required a license, it was not an ultralight
Probable Cause: Idiot Pilot
Sometimes you don't get probation.
For those commenting while being too lazy to read the full accident report at the end:- (a) His pilot's licence had been revoked, due to a non-disclosed DUI, (b) A pilot's licence was not required to fly this part 103 aircraft, (c) He bought the airplane with an agreement to take instruction, (d) he then decided against the instruction and flew it with no instruction or experience, (e) he had cannabis (THC) levels in his blood and urine. (f) this was therefore an accident that was bound to happen.
Sad. I hope this still provides some level of change into not having repeat events.
I hope all who are associated or otherwise knew the person are ok
Ha! Yeah, "Watch this".
You don’t do stuff like that in ultralights that low.. or high for that matter. their not combat aircraft or stunt planes.. the pilot brought that upon their self.
not an ultralight
That dude was an accident waiting to happen. I wonder why his original license was revoked...
@smudent2010 It was revoked for failing to report a 2009 diving license suspension, and what appears to be a 2010 DUI conviction. At 2:10 in the video, you can see the details in the _Summary of Medical Findings_ section of the report.
A non-disclosed DUI. Didn't you read the accident report after the video?
I wanna know who posted this ?!?! This is that pilots son. I just wanna say thank you for fucking with my head . You know ? I’ve had this video hidden from me until I was ready to watch and then all of sudden somehow you guys get your greedy hands on it for “content “ as for all the comments on here . Shame on you !!!!
You can clearly see an anomaly in the rear trailing edge of the left wing, it appears to be bowed up a tad as if the control support cables are shorter (twisted) which would result in less lift in the left wing. Watch the trailing edge left wing.
Prior to the crash he exceeded VNE. Shortly there after exceeded maximum bank angle and lost his vertical component of lift.
He also exceeded THC!! 🌿
@@fistteam you cant exceed THC
To dang low to recover
I so enjoy these vids
There are old pilots and bold pilots but there aren’t any old bold pilots.
That's a new one!
@Aviation Accidents
This just happened a hour or two ago;
JET CRASHES DURING THUNDER OVER MICHIGAN AIR SHOW at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan!
The EMS was talking about Homeland Security being on the scene, and saying radiation levels were ok! 😮
@@CherylPix62 probably won't write about that one until the NTSB preliminary comes out
Wow really poor decision making. Not a go kart.
There was something inherently wrong from takeoff, the craft is constantly rolling left on him, and you can see him actively fighting to the right to get it level. It was disassembled and reassembled, I suspect he got something wrong.
Commenters read the reports first.
Flexwing aircraft are more difficult to fly than they look.
Weight shift, not flex wing.
Fly in the center of the air space...
Where's that? 200,000ft?
Less than 60 seconds from liftoff to crash… flexwing aircraft are neither inherently stable or intuitive to fly. Possible suicide?
Nope , he just can't fly what he bought.
And, he invited his family to watch him. What a jackass.
@@michaelmcclown5593 nope, what he bought just cant be flown, it is a piece of junk and now only one more exists in the world
First off, this video was given to be investigated after MY FATHER crashed .. he was a veteran and flew planes all his life. And hey guess what!? He smoked weed all his life and that wouldn't have changed how he flew.. You don't think I didn't have that though? Well he didn't fucking kill himself, he was a religious and amazing man and was against that full heartedly, it was wind that caught him and sadly he couldn't get control of it.. and my mom was there to watch as he came down. A woman that was with him for over 20 years... this was the third time he took it out.. all of y'all really need to watch wat y'all say and do your research before typing because the family members that didn't even agree to having this up on CZcams are fighting with there minds and are in so much pain from seeing this...I'm his youngest..he was full of life..loved his children and grandchildren , family man.. He was an amazing person and to be seeing ppl talk Abt a man they don't even know, well that's just sad and fuckin pathetic..and quite frankly...all of these comments made by half hearted folk..not all but most, .well you can all go fuck yourselves...
Firstly, only two of these were ever built, for a reason, they are a non flying piece of junk, VNE 45 Stall 40 ??????
Are you kidding me
The cause of the crash is obvious, at 00:31 he realizes he bought a non climbing piece of junk and presses it higher, he is now a low altitude test pilot in search of performance or stall, he got STALL. On reviewing this, I am not even sure that he is conscious at 00:40 or at the very least that he has not lost of vision or spatial awareness at this point.
