On August 19, 1980, Tomales Bay fisherman Al Wilson discovered a great white shark feasting on his net of starry flounder. He knew just what to do: gently squeeze its gills and tap its head to keep it alive as he slowly brought it to shore. Wilson then contacted the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. This catch marked the beginning of an extraordinary week in Bay Area ichthyology. Through met...

Discovered this film via Peter Benchley. He brought it up as an inspiration in later introductions of his novel, Jaws and before that I heard him tell the story of how Blue Water's director co-director and expedition leader Peter Gimbel was approached by Zanuck and Brown to see if he could help them get live shark footage. Gimbel told them he'd rather direct Jaws. The producers were taken aback by this, and turned him down, since they already had Spielberg attached. When the deal with Gimbel fell through he did recommend them to call Ron and Valerie Taylor, both of whom were members of the Blue Water expedition. And the rest is history. But going back to Benchley, he maintained that it was the finest film ever made about sharks, regardless of what else had been done. And, I have to agree with him. It's one of the few films I've seen that presents the ocean as a truly alien place. Plus, the film kinda has a tone or vibe that's similar to Jaws. And Peter Lake's incident with the shark cage with the white shark at the end? Totally the inspiration for Hooper's death scene in the novel. Blue Water truly feels like a prototype to the Jaws story.

Richard Dreyfuss never played Matt Hooper in Piranha 3-D, he played Matt Boyd.

I was so shocked 😱when i saw the movie as a child, i begged my Dad, a passionate sailor and diver, to stay out of the water forevermore. Then i read all books about sharks i could get. Especially those written by Hans Hass💙🦈🌊. It has Helped a lot to understand that sharks are no monsters. I love sharks as much as i love the sea. I watched Jaws a hundred times and read the novels just as often. 😊

It's a fascinating Doco, looking back at it. But I'm so glad attitudes towards Mr.white have changed over the decades. I have this on DVD, and every time I see it now. I just can't work out how much trouble they had finding Great White Sharks in South African waters. Or that Peter Gimbel, intimately familiar with Mr. White, as he was didn't take his team to the Farallon Islands off San Francisco.

(Shrugs) Guess that wasn't known at the time. I could be wrong though. Or maybe that just wouldn't have been as exciting for a film.

@chaoticiannunez2419 "...wouldn't have been as exciting..."? Gimbals had to jump into the water to save the life of a friend, who was being attacked by a 16ft GWS. The story is recounted in the book The Devils Teeth by Susan Casey. And if they'd asked a few more questions in South Africa, of Fishermen or Government Officials. Instead of just following Whaler ships and waiting to see if Mr. White turned up. They might have found themselves at Seal Island or Dyer Island off Cape Town, and the footage the could have got? Leaping Great White Sharks! This is where they first filmed, as I recall, the Air JAWS editions for The History Channel. Now if you thought that footage was extraordinary in the 90s or early 2000s? Imagine how audiences would have reacted in 1971? And as a final point. For over three-quarters of this Film, the Star 🦈 does not make an appearance. With a week of Filming left, they leave South Africa and head to Dangerous Reef off South Australia. And it is their last day, before they get any decent footage. And this is in the company of Rodney Fox. A Man as intimately acquainted with the GWS as anyone on Earth. Aldinga Beach, 1963. He had 363 stitches, I believe it was. From the 9ft 🦈, who attacked him. But in the meantime, a thousand miles to the West, off Cheynes Beach, near Albany. Australia's last Whaling Company was having to hire people to shoot GWS, to stop them from chowing down on Whale carcasses, before they were hauled ashore for processing. One wonders why they didn't visit there, either?

I remember when I first saw Jaws. It was at the Greenbrier Mall near the Atlanta Airport, and I was with fellow students in the master's program in psychology at West Georgia College. The seven o'clock show was sold out, and the line for the next showing was already long. We got in the line and waited. By the time we entered the theater, there were no seats together, so we all found our separate seats. I ended up sitting next to a very attractive young woman. About five minutes into the movie, she grabbed my leg and didn't let go until the end of the movie. I was so engrossed in the movie that I hardly noticed.

A White Shark of 25ft would EASILY weigh more than 6000lbs or 3 tons. Deep Blue which is 20ft is over 5500lbs herself. So yes a 25ft White Shark would be tipping the scales at 11,000lbs or 5 tons which would be massive.

Ok guys let's be honest... the animatronics are masterfully crafted beyond any other mechanical sharks we've seen in shark movies so far but the digital ones are the worst fake sharks from that time. That's why i loved and hated this particular shark movie. I wish that they cut out all the digital ones and replaced them with the lifelike ones. 😊
