    Great video. Framing a hip roof for a gazebo I'm building and this has helped a lot (only had to watch it about 10 times before having all of it really sink in, LOL). Question: I am tackling my tiki bar hip roof next. Want to do a 12" overhang on the back and right side and a 24" overhang on the front and left side. How should I tackle where the 12" and 24" overhangs come together? I was thinking of having the hip rafter stop short where a fascia board would line up (in the horizontal) with the closest jack rafters on each side of the hip. Your thoughts?

    If the wood is not especially prone to splitting, then the predrill can be a little smaller than the shank, which allows the screw to fit tighter and hold stronger.

    Very good video with useful information. However, believe it or not, nothing in this list of fixes solved my problem. My router is an older Porter Cable. It doesn't get tremendous amounts of use, but has always been excellent. Lately I've notice a 1/4" bit may take some force or tapping to get it in before tightening. Then the real problem is extracting the bit later. I have to resort to all sorts of tapping and prying, trying to be as careful as possible with the carbide edges. The router bits are clean and have no residue on the shafts. I just tried cleaner on paper towel wrapped around a thin stick to clean inside the collet. This did not help. I can use the router, I just would like the bits to slide in or out normally, without the difficulties. I even wonder if anyone ever recommends some tapping with a screwdriver or something placed into the open slot of the collet, as if to perhaps expand it open a tiny bit.

    • @TrainingHandsAcademy
      @TrainingHandsAcademy Před dnem

      I talk more about these fixes in my router course, but yes, you can tap on the shank (you have to be careful with that, but it works). I've also used fine sandpaper on the collet, shanks of the bits, and inside the shaft of the router itself. It can also be from over tightening the bit in the collet. However, some older routers/collets do get worse over time... I'm not sure why maybe because of poor milling at the factor. I'm sorry this is happening to you because I know how frustrating that can be.

    Hey! Fix based router - can these also do a flush cut? I am looking for a router that I can use to follow another shape to create the same cut. Or would you need a plunge router? And which one is normally easiery to use?

    • @TrainingHandsAcademy
      @TrainingHandsAcademy Před 3 dny

      A fixed base router can do a flush cut, but only safely on an outside edge because you can't change the depth of the cut while the bit is spinning. You would want to use a plunge router for all other work. They are both about the same to use, but the plunge router just has a few more bells and whistles you need to learn about.

    Guys just start out with a any number that is a multiple of 3. Then however many times 3 goes into that number, multiply 4 and 5 by that same number. At the end, the measurement between the 3 side and the 4 side should equal 5 times whatever the number was you used to multiply with. If you start with 3x4=12. Then multiply the 4 and 5 by 4 also. 16 and then you would get 20 between the first two. It's really really simple if you know the multiplication table.
