Learning 200 pages of music in a month (I knew it would be hard!)

    Wow 30 years - so what do you recommend for a beginner - well I am beginning again playing harp - I had a harp and played but stopped and now I am starting again? Do you have any recommends for starting? I think my biggest challenge is the rhythm. I only play lever harp for now. LOL.

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen Před 20 dny

      My biggest recommendation for adults who are learning harp is to play lots of easy music. Most adults dive into pieces that are too challenging at first. For rhythm, my favorite trick is to count out loud. 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and - etc. It's a lot of effort at first but it pays of big time in the long run.

    As usual brilliant. This is really helpful, now I just need to know how to stop my brain from playing my pieces ALL the time, most of the night my fingers are moving with difficult passages and I hear both hands in my mind. It’s actually nice as I learn pieces quickly, but it’s also tiring as I don’t sleep 😂. Do you have that too ??? Thanks again 🙏

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen Před měsícem

      That only happens when I’m learning orchestra music actually-it plays on repeat especially at night. But for me a piece only seems to play in my head for a week or so. After that it’s as if my brain has digested it enough to move on. Unfortunately I don’t have any tips on how to speed up that process!

    @SharonCullenArt Před měsícem

    Holy cow Stephanie. I can’t even imagine! Thank you for sharing this. When you said it was zero degrees, I had to go back and check your posted date on this video! I thought dang I thought it was cool here today but we made it to 67! 😂 I’m curious, since I used to play in orchestras with flute, I noticed certain conductors would omit certain instruments for whatever reason, whether it be budget, or he just couldn’t find an available instrumentalist. It was actually quite rare I’d see a harpist. I wondered if maybe these were just scores without harp parts, or are there few scores that contain them? Now that I’m playing harp I wonder, do you tend to get call backs quite often from the same conductors, who have you in their”Rolodex”😊? Because, you seem to keep quite busy with orchestras. If I could play half as good as you I’d feel like I’m in heaven! The last time I played 200 pages…. Ha, you know I haven’t played 200 pages! But even when I was playing flute I don’t think I prepared anything even close in that short a time. I did have a lot of music thrown at me very late in the game though, and it was very stressful. But I always seemed to get through it. This was terrific. Thanks for sharing Stephanie. I’m sure editing all of this footage for this video took quite a while too.

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen Před měsícem

      I always am surprised by the 0 degrees thing too - I had about 3 hours of footage to condense for this video and it took me forever to cut out all the excess/uninteresting stuff. (But I like editing.) Today it's 83 degrees here in MN. :) To your question, yes, there's a ton of orchestra music that just isn't scored for harp. Pretty much anything before the 1830s for instance has no harp. So even if I'm playing for a specific orchestra concert, usually I'm only playing on 1 or 2 pieces. Since most harp parts take a lot of prep work and marking, and figuring out brackets (i.e. absolutely NOT sight-readable) it's actually pretty nice to have a lighter work load.

    I think the craziest thing I've ever done may have been a 30 page long mass (part of the chorus and that's score not individual part and it turned out we weren't singing ALL of it but I didn't know that and I'd never seen it before so I worked on all of it), plus a motet, plus still working on non-performance music for a recorder group and for the recorder and voice lessons I was taking - in one week. That was last summer. That december was also nuts. There was a concert, a church service, and a special advent spiral thing.The big yearly fundraiser for the church music program, and the other me playing Christmas and advent carols on the recorder solo for half an hour. I only had a few days notice for the carols, but at least the music was simple and I'd played or sung many of the tunes before. I think there may have been the pre-christmas recorder recital I was playing a couple of pieces in a trio, plus one of the telemann solo recorder fantasias, but I'm getting a bit blurred as to how close that was to everything else. At some point that december I did a vocal solo piece in the voice department's concert. And of course there were sunday services every sunday. And Christmas was very tiring. Sunday service christmas eve morning, midnight mass, then christmas morning service. I only got about 5 hours sleep. My voice gave out a stanza or two before the end of the Christmas day service. That December was probably about the craziest I've done so far, and it wasn't on a professional basis, so mistakes are more tolerated. It's a good way to learn where your limits are at that point in time.

    • @StephanieClaussen
      @StephanieClaussen Před měsícem

      Oh wow, a week is a pretty short turn around time for any amount of music! And I've definitely done that where I got the music and learned the whole thing, only to realize we were performing the first half only. Sad day. Your December does sound crazy busy. Having lots of different gigs/deadlines/pieces all adds to the chaos of the preparation. I was thankful that during this month where I was doing the shows, I didn't have any other major gigs or performances.
