Nine years ago I was in Rome, it was a sunny afternoon, and my friends said “Let’s go see the catacombs.” I said “Sounds fun.” Being young people not too far removed from being poor college students, we took public transit and then continued on foot, an adventure that ended up including about 5 kilometers of walking in the hot sun - along a path I discovered was the Appian Way. This etude is inspired by that road and the centuries of history it has weathered.
Etude #2 from a collection of 8 etudes for the left hand alone; I often have students who come to lessons with an injury to one hand or the other, so I thought it would be nice to write some material that's playable with only one hand. Even though these etudes are short, they are not easy. I wrote them to help the left hand get some practice doing difficult things! :)
