Arvo Pärt's music has always filled me with a sense of calm, of stillness, of moving slowly and surely through the world. This is probably one of the harder etudes in the collection due to the odd meters and big stretches. I want students to take their time and let their hands stretch in a relaxed manner.
Etude #8 from a collection of 8 etudes for the left hand alone; I often have students who come to lessons with an injury to one hand or the other, so I thought it would be nice to write some material that's playable with only one hand. Even though these etudes are short, they are not easy. I wrote them to help the left hand get some practice doing difficult things! :)
