Carbon MTB wheels are cheaper than ever - but are they really worth it?
With the falling prices from a bicycle industry in decline, is now the time to upgrade to carbon fiber wheels?
Yes they are still expensive, but they happen to be the cheapest they've ever been.
Moving from aluminum to carbon means talking about weight, compliance and ride feel. Are they faster? Yeah they might be.
Join me as I install and take a set of Stan's CB7 carbon wheels for a ride, and talk about why now might be the right time for you to upgrade.

i could imagine being beat to death with a carbon hardtail on carbon wheels.. but i'd rather not. my aggressive geo aluminum HT has aluminum rims and it's super fun to rip down dark blues and blacks. anyway, i have carbon wheelsets on my DC, enduro, and freeride rigs. all carbon frames. 2 of which have coil shocks. here's a little experiment you can perform in just a few moments.. take an old, fiberglass or aluminum fishing rod, use it for a couple minutes at your favorite hole, then switch to a full boron/carbon rod and report back.

I won’t go into the details bc most of you have already did your own research. I will put in a plug for Spoke X. I went with their enduro set with I9 Hydra hubs (not the lightest or the heaviest) 1350 was well worth the cost. I’ve put lots of miles and jumps on this wheel set and still trued.

Your impressions are pretty similar to mine when I made the switch from aluminum to carbon rims. I probably wouldn't have bothered with such an expensive upgrade, but after a year of moderate/aggressive riding I had actually caused several micro-hairline cracks in my aluminum rims! I was surprised because I'm really not all that much of a gonzo-gnar-jumpline rider. Anyway, after installing the carbon rims I noticed right away the lighter, snappier, stiffer feel of the bike. Plus they do seem pretty bombproof though I realize they certainly are not, lol! After well over a year of heavy use, they are sadly dinged up a bit but that comes with the territory. They still feel as good as the first day they were installed. Hope I get MANY more years out of them!

With the tapered axle part being so short, it is likely that it bottoms out and starts to press against the bolt too early. No amount of torque will then help, because any extra torque will not cause the tapered surfaces to move - they've already bottomed out! That extra torque will only tension the bolt threads.

The biggest explanation is Chinesium "metal", Be worth going for a torque up without grease though. Theres 2 torque settings, wet torque and dry torque. Wet torque is normally lower than dry due to increased pressure from the grease/oil/fluid medium. Admittedly they still shouldnt have snapped so easily
