- Cheaper short MTB cranks are out there - but there are some things to keep in mind. This is a follow-up video to this: • Upgrade Your Ride With...
Remember, this is just a test. I'm not saying go out and buy $46 cranks and start shredding the mountain... I'm saying you can get these cheaply and easily and give shorter cranks a try without dropping hundreds of dollars on something that might not work for you.
Since moving from a 170mm cranks to a set of AliExpress Goldix 160mm cranks I've learned a thing or two. The most important thing I learned though was get a smaller tooth chainring! Next to the cheapness of the cranks - the number one comment on the previous video was I needed a smaller chainring - and they were right! Going from the 36t to the 30t made a huge difference.
It was a cold day out there but it's better to be freezing on a trail ride than sitting on the couch.

Thanks from India ❤
From the drone shot, you can see that you're not having to rotate your hips. All the movement is in your legs. I feel like I'm moving my hips a lot trying to move my 30" inseam legs around a 170 mm crank circle that came on all my medium bikes.
Yeah it feels like I can spin faster a little easier now.
Awesome stuff. I love tinking like you to see what works best for me.
I'm all about the tinkering and trying things out and between Amazon and AliExpress it's cheaper than ever.
I watched both videos on the goldix cranks, good stuff congrats!
Did you notice any improvements going downhill, your stance width is shorter when standing with horizontal pedals, does that improve riding downhill?
Thanks!
Thanks and good question. You wind up a bit higher in and out of the saddle so it takes some getting used to shifting weight on downhills. It's not something you can't get used to but it will take a ride or two.
8:26 36T sure was massive. For a 26er bike it's fine. But 29er defenitly not not even with 50t.i got 32T x 11-50t. On um 29er enduro bike. Probably could have gone to 30T too. But haven't tried it.
Im thinking on buying that crankset, did you have any issues when it comes to installing the pedals? I dont see any info about being compatible with the 9/16 thread for the Shimano SPD-M250
Well I screwed my Crank Brothers pedals right in there so you should be fine.
Shimano chainrings won't work as they have their own direct mount system.
The 3-bolt is SRAM GXP.
What do you mean? You can get aftermarket chain rings for Shimano for their direct mount too, including ovals. But can get them for both rectangular bcd and square bcd. I keep forgetting the number thus I refer to it like this.
I guess you mean you can't fit Sram 3 bolt standard to Shimano yes you are right.
How do I know which one for my 5010 Santa Cruz? My bb is dub 68/73mm. Any help? Anyone?
Standard size there, the BB I got was BB68 for 68-73mm frame.
Cool test, man. I guess now the question is do you shell out the cash for a stronger more tried and true setup, or do you not even bother since the Goldicks seems to be working well enough? :-) If you're noticing less pedal strikes with no loss in leverage or power then maybe shorter cranks are the way to go.
Yeah that is the question isn't it. I'm on the fence but will update if I get a more expensive set.
@@VisionMTBits probably not really worth it unless you really cant live without that crank tool
i imagine the only real difference is gonna be weight but you dont look like a racer no offence (not like im one either lol)
I hate when my Goldix tool doesn't fit.
Sometimes you have to use more grease
now try some 100s with an 18t lol
these are on ali, id try it myself if i had the spare money for silly experiments and didnt need to choose between food and new tyres lol
Lol, yeah food is the proper choice.
