Deserie by Doug Robertson and The Good Guys
"Deserie" was a big hit on the west coast for the Charts in 1957, one of the most cool doo-wops ever. Doug Robertson and The Good Guys of Spokane would record their take on it in 1965. It was an odd choice for a Northwest combo to record, but Doug, with brilliant backing from the band, handled the challenging vocals. The Good Guys did appear at the Spanish Castle, I believe, in 1963. My older brother (always one of my sources) saw them and said they were great. I didn't see them, but, at least, I have their records.

Louie Louie by The Sonics
zhlédnutí 724Před dnem
"Louie Louie" was the b-side of the last Sonic's 45 released by Etiquette, at the start of 1966 ("Cinderella" being the a-side). It was released concurrent with the "Sonic's Boom" LP. If you bought the LP like most fans did, why would you then go out and buy the single? I don't believe Etiquette thought this out. I can't remember "Cinderella" getting much airplay, plus Seattle and the rest of t...
Rampage by The Statesmen

1961 was a great year for rock 'n roll, coming after the down year of 1960 brought on by the powers that be (my opinion). The movement to discourage young people from listening to their favorite music had failed. The rock 'n roll movement was back and stronger than ever. Boise's Statesmen would record this hot instrumental and it immediately became popular locally. I don't believe it was ever p...

I was surprised to see that "Shanghaied" was the "plug" side of this release. "Wailin'" got the most airplay, although "Shanghaied" was a minor hit locally (Note that Golden Crest not only spelled shanghaied wrong, but also Rich Dangel's name). These early Wailers' instrumentals were so incredible. I played the "Fabulous Wailers" so much, that I completely wore down the grooves (playing it on m...

After The Byrds success with Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man", a lot of bands saw this as an avenue to success. Spokane's Mark 5 would record this wild version of "Maggie's Farm" in 1965, and release it on Ned Neltner's own Jani label. Bob Dylan would go electric in 1965, and "Maggie's Farm" was one of the three selections he performed at the Newport Folk Festival with backing from the Paul But...

When I first saw Don and the Goodtimes, it was one of Jim Valley's first appearances with them. I was somewhat disappointed, and felt that he had made a mistake. I have never been more wrong. Dunhill Records would sign them based on their success with "Little Sally Tease" (I still can't believe ...

I can't find a photo of the Sting Rays (from Portland), so instead, I've shown some 1964 Corvette Sting Rays. When this record was released in the summer of 1964, the Sting Rays traveled up to Seattle and appeared at a few of the local dances sponsored by KJR, probably at the behest of Lan Roberts, who was the producer along with Norm Smith of the Sting Rays. The Seaport label was most likely i...

I don't know if the Wailers and the Dynamics ever got together. It would have been one heck of a show. Rockin' Robin's "Rosalie" was one of the highlights of the "Castle" LP. His singing style still enthralls me, even to this day. "Busybody", the Roy Lee Johnson rocker, would become Jimmy Hanna's signature song. The popularity of this song, featured on the Dynamics live at Parker's LP, would in...

In early 1960, Dolton would release the Frantics' latest effort, an ode to the werewolf legend which had taken hold of the country via old horror movies shown on late night television. Early in 1966, Paul Revere and the boys would receive a new song from songwriters, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. They recorded "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone", expecting it to be their next release after the success of "Just Like Me". However, fate would intervene. The original Wailers had some serious talent...I ran out and bought their first album-on the Golden Crest label--that album was actually recorded in NYC!..I remember reading, as to how thrilled the guys were, to hear their version of Louie Louie being played on local radio, when they would be driving around!...I mean, those guys were only 17-18yo when they first broke out. That first album, IMO, did not have a bad cut on it!

When I was with Don Blocker's (former Director of A&R at Liberty Records) TAP ~Talent Artist Productions~ in Hollywood, The Wailers were among our clients (promotions and record distribution for their Etiquette label). We introduced the band to producer/arranger Andy DiMartino ("Rhythm Of The Rain" -The Cascades, etc.) who became their record producer. Don's closest friend was Record Producer Snuff Garrett ("Run To Him"-Bobby Vee, etc.) who had also left Liberty Records and was currently the head of Clint Eastwood's Viva Records...thus, The Wailers eventually found themselves on Viva. Kent Morrell and Buck Ormsby often stopped by our Hollywood office and because I was also from the Pacific Northwest we found lots to BS about. The last time I crossed paths with Buck was at a tribute concert, in Ballard, for NW songwriter Ron Davies ("It's You Alone" -The Wailers, erc ). It was great to have a chance to reminisce with Buck again.

A number of different stories about how Ron Peterson & The Accents evolve into the Bellingham Accents. The one I heard, from the people at Jerden Records, was that their records were released during the "British Music Invasion" and owner/producer Jerry Dennon just felt that "Bellingham" had a British sounding "flavor" to it and people outside of the Northwest wouldn't know the difference & might deduce they were an British band. (Hopefully radio station Music Directors!). The band eventually evolved into the Bellingham band, The Unusuals. The photo at 1:57 includes the blonde Kathi McDonald of The Unusuals. (Check out her later career all over CZcams). The Unusuals had a garage band classic with their "I'm Walking Babe" with many covers by bands in the US and Europe and the inclusion on the soundtrack of 2 different European television series...1 in France and 1 in England.

Always loved this tune and this great teen rock 'n roll band out of Yakima, Washington. (Larry Coryell recently from the Tri-Cities, WA...at the time). If memory serves me right, that Dick Ruthardt on bass (from Grandview, WA) I went to highschool with songwriter and piano player Mike Mandel and we were good friends. Mike was a couple of years younger than I, but we had music in common ... so, we hung out a lot and he'd show me the latest rockin' piano hit he'd mastered. Mike is blind and a remarkable musician. Larry and Mike went on to much success in Larry's jazz-fusion band, The Eleventh House.
