  • In 1958, a new television series, "Peter Gunn" became so popular that networks raced to have their own jazz-themed detective show. Series such as "Johnny Staccato", "Mr. Lucky", "M Squad" and my favorite, "Shotgun Slade" would debut in 1959. The theme from "Peter Gunn" is now iconic, and the soundtrack lp was a best seller. The Wailers were also fans of the show and the music. Thus, their lp, "The Fabulous Wailers", would include a tribute to the popularity of the series, "Gunnin' for Peter", one of my all time favorites. Most of these cuts from "The Fabulous Wailers" can still give me a chill down my spine when I hear them. The show itself had a dark, film noir atmosphere and starred Craig Stevens in the title role with help from the wonderful Lola Albright as his girl, Edie Hart, a nightclub singer.
