  • I can't find a photo of the Sting Rays (from Portland), so instead, I've shown some 1964 Corvette Sting Rays. When this record was released in the summer of 1964, the Sting Rays traveled up to Seattle and appeared at a few of the local dances sponsored by KJR, probably at the behest of Lan Roberts, who was the producer along with Norm Smith of the Sting Rays. The Seaport label was most likely in deference to the popularity of the Portland music scene at the time. I believe it was a forerunner of the Seacrest label, which featured the Counts (also produced by Lan Roberts). "One Mo' Gin" was a remake of "Mood Dawg", a west coast hit in 1960 by the Gamblers and a precursor to the surf instrumental craze. The Gamblers were studio musicians (Derry Weaver on lead guitar and Sandy Nelson on drums). This was a common practice on some of the instrumentals recorded in Southern California at the time. In fact, the cut on the "Like Long Hair" LP was not Paul Revere and the Raiders at all, but the Gamblers recording.
