ADHD and Narcissism: The Hidden Link You NEED To Know! - Dr Mark Rackley
Alex chats with leading psychologist, Dr Mark Rackley, about all things ADHD & Narcissism.
Topics:
00:00 Trailer
02:28 A broad question and not yet ADHD specific, but, what is a narcissist and is there a difference between a narcissist and someone with NPD?
06:48 Why do you think narcissism is such a big topic in the world at the moment?
08:27 Is genuine Narcissism or NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder for audience members) common and if so, why do you think that is?
10:10 What does a narcissist need to "survive" and what is it they’re looking for in life (and what are they looking for from people around them)?
14:20 How does a narcissist prey on someone and what sort of people are they looking to exploit?
16:30 Is covert narcissism different to the more mainstream narcissism we hear about and why is it particularly dangerous?
18:21 Are narcissists afraid of being alone and what - in general terms - do you think a narcissist thinks of when they are left alone?
20:00 What might the general timeline be for someone dating a narcissist and that dating turning into a serious relationship i.e how might narcissism show itself gradually in a romantic relationship?
22:04 What tricks does a narcissist use to keep you on their hook if they see you as part of their "narcissistic supply”?
24:05 ADHD Item
27:06 Washing machine of woes
33:09 Do narcissists know they’re narcissists?
34:24 At what point would a narcissist begin to become self-aware that they might indeed have a problem?
36:39 I need to voice some worries of my own! I’m on camera, I think I share some of the traits we've been talking about. I don't like being alone. I need praise to rid me of my RSD….do you think I’m a narcissist? How can I tell?!
39:48 How can I be sure that my traits are just ADHD and not narcissism?
43:09 Are there any other similarities someone with ADHD might have that are typical of a Narcissist, but might not be narcissism?
45:07 If someone has an ADHD partner and they are trying to figure out if it's ADHD, or if there is something more sinister at play, what steps can they take to help try to figure it out?
47:51 Is there a known cause for narcissism and if not, what do you think might be a factor that perpetuates it?
49:18 How to spot a narcissist
53:21 Can you ever change a narcissist and is it worth trying?
54:05 Can narcissists be successful professionally?
57:33 Successful narcissists aside, with the lower rungs of narcissism and perhaps the majority of the narcissistic population that aren't particularly high-functioning CEOs, what can that look like? Or to put it another way, what does the "everyday narcissist" look like?
59:40 Is social media causing narcissism, or is it just the perfect tool for someone who already is a narcissist?

Overdiagnosis of autism and ADHD nowadays. I can see how some of her kids can meet the criteria. But her, I don't know. Not so much. Autism and AD HD are very present and persuasive in childhood. Throughout your whole life, it doesn't just start later in your f****** life. Here's an example. I'm diagnosed with ADH. D. And anti-social personality disorder. I was diagnosed with AD HD when I was 8 years old that was over 20 years ago. Later on in life I was diagnosed with a personality disorder. But apart from that I exhibited signs of autism as a child that never met the full criteria to be diagnosed with it. Just because you have some sensory issues. Etc doesn't mean you're f****** autistic!!!! I am so sick of this trend and if anyone wants to come at me and say it's not a trend, it's a trend. I appreciate this channel But can we please get some people on here? That were diagnosed 20 plus years ago when clinicians weren't overdiagnosing. And all these people project this disorder like it. 's some badge of honor it's not the disorders. I have are not fun. It's not cute z. I'm just flaunted around on TikTok. Like it's some kind of identity. It's not. It's made my life whole lot harder than the average person because of my brain.

  • @hurricane_valence
    @hurricane_valence Před 11 hodinami

It's interesting. They cover the trend topic. As a person diagnosed with AD. H. D. It's interesting. She would go about saying that about how people must believe it's not real. Oh I think it's real. That's the thing I just think a lot of people are being overdiagnosed with this when they don't actually fit the criteria. I was diagnosed when I was 8 years automatication for it. I think what's irritating about the overdiagnosis of persons nowadays is it's gonna become so common to where when people who actually have it need help, they won't be able to Receive help. Like clinicians will see. Oh, there's a trend going on on tik. Tok now and I'm not gonna take. My client seriously because they saw TikTok. And now they think they have a disorder. It will take longer for that person to seek a diagnosis if they have it or get medication.

Oh great. These people the ones that make ADHD their identity. I was diagnosed with ADHD over 20 years ago. That was under the DSM 4 I believe. I think there is over statuation of diagnosis happening nowadays Of people that don't really have these disorders. I think it's become a trend. I feel like clinicians have become lazy and more likely to slap a label on people not spending time with their clients. Not to mention, this is a whole new generation of people who are making their mental illnesses their identities it's bizarre. Yes, there was a time where mental illness was so stigmatized. We couldn't even talk about it, but I feel like its swinging the other direction now. She seems to have maybe have something else. It's just with a d h d and autism And all those other disorders are very present in child hood and young adult hood , it's not Something that is caught on in your late 30s. All these people saying that they're autistic and oh, they have AD HD, and they didn't realize it. No, you don't because it would have been something so pervasive throughout your whole life. Like, for example, someone would have noticed it. Parents, teachers friend's peers.

To me this sounds as if every ADHDer were a criminal and, even worse, that neurotypic people hardly ever committed a crime. I find that discriminating even dangerous, especially when it comes to sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is about power and humiliation and sadly differently labeled commonly accepted. Plus needing to help people to boost one's own adrenaline and advocating medication rather unreflected is a concept I don't support. ADHDer, non criminal

I love hearing you talk about positive aspects because so many people focus on the difficulties we have and yes we do, but I’ve started to realize that there are some things I do exceptionally well! Ok so yes I never pay my bills on time or sometimes at all 😮 but I have discovered a fountain of creativity that just pours out of my brain and empathy almost to the point of actually worry more about other people than myself, but I’m learning. And I know the RSD can sometimes get in the way, but intuition… I sometimes think that we can tell what people are thinking before they can even tell what they’re thinking so I’m not only sure that RSD is off the mark.🤔

They don't need a reason to attack. Nothing you do will make them more or less attack you. They always feel the need to attack. Everything makes them feel inadequate. Even with yiur absence, that emptiness needs to be filled and they will stalk you, harassing you endlessly. You just blink and they have already been attacking. Their brain is wired wrong.

From my experience, narcissist needs lots of admiration and is visibly «teacher» vibe. This is a person who consider himself the judge. You will have to chase him. Also depends how you look like (if beautiful) or what you have that he can benefit from ( access to good things in life). You will sense across few dates already they will spit unkind comments but blame you to be unkind. Its intuitive. You will feel it. It will confuse you. Specially if you are adhd or depressed, you will feel guilty and not deserving of him. If you feel some of this, run. Silently.

The way Mine describes her RSD is what I was trying to explain to a friend and work colleague. I even used the phrase “I’m a nice person so don’t deserve it.” I never imagine it or make it up. I have a heightened sense of it. It was podcasts like this that have made me seek a private diagnosis. I don’t lose things either, but I display a lot of other traits. I have submitted my evidence and I am awaiting the appt over the next few weeks. I think I need to know why the last 45 years of my life has been so difficult. Why my working life is plagued by difficulties and why I have had so many jobs and been through so many disciplinaries due to not thinking or behaving the way I am expected to. My only fear now is if I don’t get diagnosed as since investing so much time learning about it, everything that has happened over the last 45 years makes total sense. Freaking out about missing events has lost me many friends too. I absolutely believe I have autism and adhd. It also runs in my family. I really relate to Mine.

Wow - Joseph has described my events of June 2023 exactly. I was in A&E 15 months ago and I had 18 of those deja-vu seizures between 8pm and noon the following day and my BP was through the roof. I had been drinking loads and loads of Diet Coke - of course, again packed with caffeine and I dare say other stuff. They gave me brain scans and found nothing and the neurologist was devoid of explanation and just said it was the start of epilepsy at the age of 69 - I had no idea I had ADHD then, putting down my symptoms to loneliness and depression. I didn't believe him with his vague epilepsy diagnosis which I thought was a lame and unproven guess on his part - I have a bioscience degree and between leaving A&E and seeing the neurologist a week later, I had read a load of scientific papers on deja vu experiences but none linked it to ADHD . But I DID stop drinking Diet Coke and changed my diet and have not had another of those Deja Vu episodes (which were terrifying) since. I don't drink more than 2 mugs of coffee in a day now. The most interesting thing is each episode t was accompanied by having a phantom smell before the deja vu incident and then the head-spinning that lasted about 10 seconds - it was the same in each episode. They seemed to be every 50-70 minutes apart except when I managed to sleep in the A&E waiting room. I also take Amlodipine at a very low dose and I kept asking for a tablet and by noon, they finally relented and the episodes stopped - and of course, I was no longer glugging down Diet Coke cans like there was no tomorrow. They kept me in for another 24 hours and in the end, I self-certified my release after having the MRI scans and said i would happily come back the next day to see an neurologist but again, they were refusing to give me the Amlodipine, my blood thinners and statin - I was worried it might bring on another bout of episodes but it didn't but they finally relented but heck they did their damnedest to keep me in. but I have has no episodes since. I did buy a 2 litre bottle of Diet Coke about a month ago and drank about half the bottle to try ot keep me awake when I was video editing and I felt I had the start of another deja-vu episode but it didn't have any of the disorientation or phantom smell but I knew enough to not drink any more coke and glug down a load of water. So now, I am 99% sure I too and far too responsive to caffeine (95% chance) and possibly even aspartame (5% chance) I had 3 of these episodes in 2004 about 3 weeks apart and then they stopped. I put it down to taking citalopram which I immediately discontinued and didn't get another for for 21 years later, but i will never ever forget the damn phantom smell but generally, I have a highly responsive olfactory system and can normally smell scents at much lower concentrations than other people I know. I also get headaches if I am in a room full of men that are drinking or excitable which I have by trial and error put down to my being affected by inhaling male pheromones. My episodes in 2023 were when it was very warm indeed and I had been eating erratically with an unusually high carb intake. It is only in the past 2 months at the prompting of my CBT therapist during the penultimate session of NHS Talking Therapies did she suggest i seek a diagnosis since she said it would seem I am displaying far too many classic ADHD symptoms incl racing mind and terrible RSD. Since then, watching your podcast, every person on your show, Alex, describes the very same experiences and challenges I have faced all my life and now i am 70. In order to try to keep myself busy since I live alone, I have tried to get my YT channel going but I go into bouts of terrible feelings of failure that are inhibiting me from recording new videos or more often editing videos I have already done. My ADHD was telling me I was going to be immediately successful but that has not been the case and it is hard to re-adjust to having to do it all so darned slowly hahaha.
