I had the pleasure of participating in the building of a wood fired kiln in Jeju Island, South Korea. This project was organised by a Korean potter, Insung Hwang @daebuyo6342 (@daebuyo on instagram). It developed into a hybrid kiln with the fire box (front part of the kiln) being made using round clay bricks (bone dried but unfired) called 'mangdangi or mangsengi' (망댕이 or 망생이) - and the rest of...

Lucky to be in Jeju for a Jeju onggi festival, ‘제주 옹기 굴제’, that included a wood firing in a 12 meter long traditional Jeju stone kiln. I went to watch the end of the 4 day firing. The stoking happens at the side holes (6 holes on each side, so 12 in total) whilst slowly closing the front fire-stoking-hole, as they progressively move from the bottom holes to the top ones. @jejuonggi_com 제주옹기박물관 ...

Is there a reason you didn’t wet the rim of the pot before attaching the new coil this time?
The rim just before was wet enough so it didn’t need more water. I remember making this video in the winter. So you have to make a judgement to wet the rim or not before the next coil. Thank you for watching!
@@leesaewonthank you!
Thank you for this video! I don't really understand what you're doing from 13:30 - 15:00, could you explain the purpose of this technique please?
Thank you for watching. It is to compress the coil and when I thin the coil the top(rim) will not be flapping, so the rim will stay in shape.
Your poor hands with all that grog! Looks amazing, though!
At least, I’m not throwing! Thanks for watching
J'aurais bien aimé pouvoir regarder, malheureusement, il n'y a pas de traduction en français, et j'en suis vraiment désolée

I would use stationary stool for throwing. Possibly use wheeled stool for hand built work.
이런책들이 필요한데 전통도자서적류 소개좀 부탁드립니다 제발😅

Superb! Welldone
Have you tried keeping the paddle in the same position (and dropping it) whilst turning the wheel with your other hand?
You could do it either way I guess :)

Wow. I love your work. The vases are beautiful. May I ask at what temperature or cone you fire them to? Thank you. I'm a potter who is currently experimenting with terracotta and mixed body clay at both high and earthenware temperatures :)
Hello, thanks so much! They were fired at 1240 degrees, oxidisation. Good luck with experimenting!
Thank you so much. I'm assuming you mean celsius, not Fahrenheit. You've got me so interested in Korean ceramics - I want to go and see them in person! @@leesaewon

When I roll out a slab, I start with a block of clay and hit it with a rolling pin to get down to the depth I need, usually one fourth inch. I live in New Mexico, USA. I have never seen the tool you use to get to your slab depth. I would be so grateful if you could tell me the name of the tool you use, and where I might purchase one. This tool seems, to me, to be so immediate and in touch with the clay. You are such an inspiration! Thank you!!!
Thank you for watching! That is an Onggi making tool which I have used in my own way. It is a tool used to thin the walls of jars from the inside. Please see below clip for its original usage. czcams.com/video/YzAD10u4DOY/video.htmlsi=blIDBBh0lIRbWYY4 I made this tool with the Onggi master in the video above. I think it can be bought at Korean pottery suppliers in korea (most Onggi makers make their own) but not sure in the US. If you know, Adam Fields (US potter who learnt Onggi in Korea), he might be able to direct you better. Thank you!!

Thank you for the time and effort it must have taken to film and edit this process.
Thank you so much for your kind comment! The brush was in the kintsugi kit. I think any fine brush with a little bit of tension should work. The bristles part of the brush about 1cm long.
What is the clay tho? Or am i jus suppose to know? If u know u know
Haha. It's called Craft Crank bought from Pot Clays (a UK based supplier)
Will the cylinder inside not blow as you didnt put an air hole in it?
Hello, Please see my replies below on this very question.
Love the beautiful community. Great artists. Buildings and coffee shops 💕
Dzięki za lustro!

This is a little different bearing wise than the traditional Korean wheel, is it not?
I wouldn’t know the answer to that as it was a gift. Hyangjong who gave the wheel said it was custom made for him so it could be slightly different to how it is traditionally made. However, this is a very well made wheel that works really well. Thank you.
@@leesaewon it looks fantastic
Beautifully detailed instructions. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and sense of perfection
Thank you! Good to hear it is useful :)
Impressed on: how quickly it was made, it was strong enough to stand on while mortar still wet..!
Indeed! 6 hours or so of building time here

very interesting. One thing cylinder you added inside, it now stops anyone from putting dried flowers in the vase?
There is space, so it’s still possible to put flowers even with water
What brand is the sprayer where do you find it?

ok, i e finally begun my box! the four pieces were pretty leather hard, but i forgot to add coils and now the box is a … box! do you think it will strong enough? everything else i’ve made has stayed together, so here’s hoping.
Hi Kirstie, great to hear that you had a go! It should fine as long as you have pressed hard on the sides as you were joining. The coil is an extra layer of support. Also, the glaze will further seal the areas so just finish the whole process and see how it comes out. Please let me know how it goes or send me a photo when you finish :) enjoy!!

I don't know English, I hope it is well translated.. I wonder what type of ball bearings the lathe has and do the wheels have to be made of wood for some particular reason or is it better if they were made of cement? I like your videos
Hello Aisha, Thank you for watching. Sorry, it's very difficult to understand the translation. Are you asking about the kick wheel? I have made a video about it. czcams.com/video/2oLxMh6OnDI/video.html
What type of wood is used to make these?
The wood is Oak
What type of clay was used?
craft crank (very grog heavy) from Potclays, a UK supplier. Thank you.
I think it may be harder bc your on a chair with wheels lol
How are you not creating an air pocket when you depress and then fold over the clay at the top edge where you join the next coil. Your clay appears to be very soft and wet, but still, that depression you create and then move clay over it seems like you’d create a air pocket. Please explain why you do this. And thank you for sharing this process, this is a huge pot and it’s beautiful!
Thank you for watching! Sometimes I hear popping sounds when I squeeze the new coil on the one before so that is to remove them. I have never had problems with air pockets with all the coil pots I have made. The reasons to decompress the new coil top are 1) two joints (new coil and one before) to fuse better 2) so the new coil top stay in shape and not change shape as I thin the wall. 3) It offers slight thicker surface for the next coil to sit on as you see my colis are so thick!
