They have great appreciation for local Jeju clay which contains high iron and can be fired to high temperature (beyond 1250c) for onggi ware. Most of the work is made with local clay that is not glazed, but smoked fired to a high temperature so that they are functional. The soil they process to make clay is from the west of Jeju, Shin peong-ri (신평리).

Thank you this video. This gives me one more reason why I need to go to Jejudo next year. I'm glad to see that they are firing unglazed vessels since that is in line with Jejudo ceramic traditions. I have traveled many times to the islands of Okinawa, where you find a culture quite distinct from that of the Japanese mainland and an equally distinctive ceramic tradition. These features are found in both Jeju and Okinawa, and I look forward to to exploring the parallels and contrasts of the two island cultures. There are many youtubers showing us their travels on Jejudo, but you are the first I've found that introduced a potter's workshop and wares. DAVID COATES

Thank you for watching and glad to know it is helpful. I am a potter myself so I was keen to check out the local clay and pottery traditions. Okinawa is on my list to visit as I kitesurf and islands do have their own ecosystems, which is always interesting. I would be interested to learn the traditions of both islands once you have visited Jejudo. Please share your findings when you get a chance! Thank you!
