Leather Stitching: Hand Sewing Vs. Machine Sewing - Advantages and Disadvantages
CHAPTERS
00:00 Introduction
02:36 First advantage of hand sewing - simplicity and low cost of tools
03:04 Second advantage of hand sewing - the "handmade look" by using a thick thread
03:50 Third advantage of hand sewing - a more durable product
04:35 One disadvantage of hand sewing - slow
05:25 Fourth advantage of hand sewing - a meditative and relaxing activity for the artisan
06:10 First advantage of machine sewing - fast speed with minimal effort
06:30 Experiment of sewing the same product once by machine and once by hand while timing the process.
07:58 First disadvantage of machine sewing - complexity in finding the right sewing machine for sewing your product.
08:23 Second disadvantage of machine sewing - price of machine can be expensive.
08:47 Rani tells how he had to purchase a stronger sewing machine once he began to use thicker and harder leather.
09:43 Operating a machine requires high skill and practice.
10:20 Rani describes how operating a sewing machine is similar to activities like driving a car
or operating a drill.
12:20 Price of leather vs. Denim. Leather is expensive and has to be sewn more carefully.
14:10 Thickness of thread used by different sewing machines.
16:44 Sewing cardboard as a way to practice operating the sewing machine.

    The problem with this method is you are undervolting it and thus it cannot do thick fabric on low speed. The solution would be to have a motor that has less rng with a gear reduction method of some sort with full throttle and voltage.

    I saw that Schmetz makes a 120/90 needle that works with T90 thread that will fit a Singer. I have a bunch of V92 thread that I have used on my Singer 6680 Heavy Duty with a Jeans needle with ok results. If the 120/90 needle fits my machine shouldn't I theoretically be able to use the V92 thread, if you are saying what limits you to V69 is the needle size of 110/18? I would really like to use the thread I have on hand. I learned more in your video than anything I have seen to date. Thanks for sharing! ps...I have a Granny Wheel on the way, too!

    Thanks for the comparison. As a furniture maker and applying Arborite to plywood for counter tops, when I used contact cement the label instructions were to let both sides dry until they are not tacky to the touch before placing the pieces together. And the strength of the bond is also according to the pressure of the join at time of contact. Which is relevant to this video. A smoother, more even coating on both sides and high pressure at the bond would make the leather extremely difficult to peel off.

    The sailrite is not an industrial machine. Even sailrite calls it a heavy duty sewing machine. For a sewing machine to be called industrial there are parameters that have to be met that the sailrite machine doesn’t even come close to. Now the sailrite fabricator is an industrial sewing machine, but the LS1 and the LZ1 are just heavy duty.

    • @rosemaryabbott1020
      @rosemaryabbott1020 Před 2 měsíci

      If they are just heavy duty then why the $1000 price tag?

    • @gmcxm211
      @gmcxm211 Před 2 měsíci

      Industrial sewing machine - can sew continuously without stopping Heavy duty - has a more powerful motor than sewing machines of the same size and will have better quality parts. But the motor will have a duty cycle of 1 hour of "continuous" sewing with a 20 minute cooling period. Don't let this video confuse you, this is not an accurate comparison. The Sailrite machine is designed to sew and repair sails and is a walking foot machine. Whereas the Singer HD is designed to do home domestic sewing projects, sewing denim jackets would be the max for this machine since it has a 1 amp motor. The Singer HD is comparable to the sewing machines that were made back in the 1960's and 70's. The all metal frame sewing machines, but all those machines came with a 0.3 to 0.5 amp motor. Where the Singer HD gets the rating of "heavy duty", it comes with a 1 amp motor, with everything thing else reaming the same. So think of the Singer HD as a vintage sewing machine but with a 1 amp motor. Now let's compare the portable "walking foot" machines that start out around $370.00. Why the $1,000 price tag for the Sailrite machines. These Sailrite machines have a thicker casting, and the parts on the inside are cast with a steal alloy instead of the cheaper cast iron parts. Now the Sailrite machines are assembled to use aboard sailboats and yachts. They come with everything you need to start sewing. You don't have to buy any accessories, just buy thread and needles and start sewing. It also comes with a lifetime warranty if any part should break. The cheaper portable walking foot machines don't come with any accessories and some of the parts inside need to be upgraded. So when it all said and done for how much money you'll need to spend upgrading the cheaper walking foot machine to match the Sailrite machines, the price will end up being the same.

    I hate my Singer HDuty 4452. I used it gleefully about 3x, and then something went wrong and now it wont sew through thin cotton. I bought an 120 year old Singer treadle machine to use instead I was so upset. The HD4452 just sits and I am thinking of selling it strongly. However, watching you here is kind of mind blowing. I may have to relook at why my Machine went out. Any advice is welcome Sir.

      @@silversprout4586 Thank you. It turns out you are right. I did just that about a week ago, and it works beautifully now, just like the one in this video. I'll admit to feeling extremely fearful, and actually sweating from the process. Turns out its a lot simpler that the scary picture I had created in my mind. I hope that encourages someone else, who like me was intimidated. I also oiled the machine properly and now it runs 80% quieter than when I got it new. I'll still be selling it, as in the last week, I decided to rehab (completely disassemble) a 1903 Singer 27-4 treadle machine, on the back of the success of the HD4452), and though its been a LOT of work, the machine literally.... sings. Its so much quieter and respectable to me than the new machines. So, while its fixed, it will be for sale soon :) Thanks for commenting!

      Depends on the job you're doing wth it. If you have rabbits raiding the blueberry bushes in your garden in the city, see how long it takes for the cops to show up after you take several shots with a 45. Playing COD too much makes *everyone* a special operator, I guess.

    I have the Ultrafeed LSZ model with the monster wheel. I have been doing some leather, but your demo was awesome. One thing I do have is a few sets of feed dogs and presser feet. The set for canvas is serrated, very sharp. It will leave a track on leather and even waxed canvas. So I have another set that is smooth, and another that has a light knurling. Sailrite does say that if you have a special request for feet that you should let them know. They might make it! I am quite happy with Sailrite, their customer service is awesome, great vids on yourtube, and they sell a ton of stuff for sewing.

    Thank you so much for producing this video. I’m a hobbyist leather maker and spending big money on a sailrite is just not justifiable at this time. Really great content that helped out. 👍

    My sewing machine has the same pedal, however I opened it and the machine won’t start near the high end/the start of the slider: it would only start running when the slider reaches near the lower end. I would say only the lower 25% length of the slider actually starts the machine, that gives very little room to control the speed. Any idea why would this be like that? Can it be fixed? I see a potentiometer there inside the pedal, could turning it help on this?

      I know what you mean. I also know about the potentiometer. I did once try to play around with the potentiometer but didn't get any meaningful results. But I didn't really investigate it that much. Concerning the slider, I suspect that if you replace that slider (if it's possible at all) with a more sensitive slider that has a bigger range you might get better results.

      Also, when starting the machine make sure the needle is in the air and not inside the fabric. You want zero resistance at take off.
