The Range of Light - Award Winning Hiking Documentary | 400 Miles in 35 Days
Award Winning Hiking Documentary - The Range of Light - 400+ Miles in 35 Days
The Range of Light is an intimate look into the lives of three hikers as they tackle the high routes in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, covering over 400 miles in around 35 days. The film looks at the addictive nature of long-distance hiking, the creation of high routes, and the threats these wild places face.
The Range of Light was shot by Paul Ingram in 2019 and edited through covid times. With the support of the film's sponsors mentioned below, funding was raised to gather together a post-production team, some US based, some in the UK, and some in Pauls's adopted home country in Finland. Upon completion, the film ran in the adventure film festival circuit, being viewed at 6 different festivals around the globe and winning the award of best cinematography at the Lyons International Film Festival. In the spring of 2023, The Range of Light had its Finnish premiere, where industry professionals, friends, and family could watch the film together before its online release on CZcams.
With the success of his first film Paul received funding and production support from Kendal Film Festival in the UK and RAB to produce a second film. Seasons Lost is currently in production in 2023 and will enter the film festival circuit at the end of the year.

- Elitism in the outdoor community
Key Characters and Interviewees:
Hikers:
1. Josh "Cheesebeard" Tippett - Triple Crowner, Photographer, Baker
Struggle/Story - Moving to Finland, figuring out what to do with his life, excited to fly fish in the Sierra, and to see areas of the Sierra most people don't.
2. Danielle "Sonic" Vilaplana - Long-distance multi-sport lizard based out of a Ford Ranger in Utah and Wyoming
Struggle/Story - She attempts the hike a few months after breaking and dislocating her leg in a skiing accident. Living in her truck to fund the lifestyle. Motivated to hike the high routes in the Sierra and avoid the elitism on the triple crown trails.

its tedious to listen to dixon and skurka discuss how/why the routes were created for 10 minutes (especially Dixon, sorry old man most people dont have the skills to hike off trail on high routes) and its really annoying to listen to pretentious thru hikers complain about all the normies they encounter on non-routes. Besides that I enjoyed this!

I enjoy regular persons in those videos and that it's unscripted when they tell their stories, however if someone is constantly using "like" up to multiple times in one sentence - then better cut it out or give them a prepared script. I stopped after about 1/3 of the video as I couldn't hear it anymore. Sorry.

I hiked a lot in the Sierras in the 80s and the 90s. It is a special place with a special feel. I never felt the need to thru hike anything. Just go and explore in one area, going off trail to find remoteness and beauty, and then do it again in a different place. Now I tend to do it in Southern Utah. I tend to go solo because I like the feel of isolation and no distractions, just me and the creation, experiencing the "it". This was an interesting video and was informative. Thanks for sharing it.

Great video! New subscriber here. There is a scene near the end where you are packing up your camp and you have some light green gloves on that look thin enough to wear while packing up. What brand/model of gloves is that? The hardest thing for me on any backpack trip is that my fingers get very cold in the morning when packing up as I can't find thin enough gloves to wear that also allow me to pack up camp. Thanks!

Openel folding knives fold and lock, just twist the metal ring and lock. Great tool. they come in about tens blade lengths, from paring to butcher size. Where I grew up every kid started carrying a pocket knife to school in the 4th grade, We used them to play games, whittling birds, spoons etc. Just remember a knife is a tool. For safety's sake make sure you are always using the right size tool for the job you are using it for. Being a wee bit older than most, I have never figured out this Light weight obsession hiking thing about counting grams or oz. To me bulk not weight is the real concern.
