Greenville Farm Power of the Past 2024 gas engines
Highlights of the annual Farm Power of the Past show in Greenville, OH featuring engines made in Ohio. All 6 known examples of Wogaman gearless gas engines made in Greenville were displayed at the show. Other Ohio engines in the video include Benninghofen, Foos, Gearless, Hamilton, and Saint Mary's. Other engines on display; but not caught on video include Buckeye, Callahan Junior, Foos Junior, and Springfield Type A. This is truly one of the finest engine shows in Ohio. Next year's show will be July 10-13, 2025.

A very unusual Callahan Junior gas engine made by the W.P. Callahan Co. of Dayton, Ohio. These were built in three sizes: 4, 8, and 15 horsepower. These are hit and miss governed with the governor mounted in the flywheel and a pushrod to actuate the exhaust valve. 2nd video of my 100mm Heinrici hot air engine. I now have a small propane burner underneath and enough heat to drive the water pump. The clanking in the background is the dolly the engine is sitting on rocking on the garage floor. Next step is to get a water tank plumbed to the engine for longer runs.

First run of a 10cm Heinrici type HL Stirling cycle engine. This engine is equipped with an Allweiler semi-rotary pump. This engine has been unused for approximately 80 years. 90hp National Transit Klein model B 2 cylinder gas engine. This is one of only a couple surviving examples of the 2 cylinder model. First public run after completing a multi-year restoration. Ran beautifully after some fine tuning and getting a little heat in the cylinders.

Do you happen to have any information or pictures of the original fly ball governor setup?
I don't; but you may be able to find pictures on the Coolspring Power Museum website. They have a couple of JC engines on display and at least one has the governor on it.

Thank you very much for posting this video. I particularly enjoyed hearing the exhaust beat, and wanted to know what it sounded like outside. Was any use made of the engine cooling water? Like to heat domestic hot water within the building or space heating in wintertime. Facinating, and great that you have recorded a piece of history for posterity.

None of the Brownwall/Holland engines I've seen have a choke. Check your fuel line and check ball to be sure they aren't gummed up with old gas. I usually plug the intake with my thumb for one stroke. With the needle valve opened 1/2 a turn it should be gushing gasoline. Visit smokstak.com if you still don't have luck pulling up fuel with your engine.

It looks like 10387 when I pause it at 0:35 in the video. The tag is not original to the engine, so it's hard to say what the real number was.

I don't know how much it varies, but I would guess it stays within 10 rpm of its set speed. This particular engine ran as smooth and steady as a fine watch the entire weekend of the show.

Well it sure is a neat little thing! I have a little steam engine which kind of looks like a big Lister with the big flywheel I put on it. They are great because you can buy as many as you like and then they slot together to make multi cylinder units. Might buy a couple of kits and make a big twin cylinder one....
@steamwally I purchased the little vacuum engine at the NTA show in Wauseon, Ohio several years ago. I think a little more mass on the flywheels would help it run better. A little more flame wouldn't hurt either!

Very interesting engine, it's alot quieter mechanicaly compared to a similar engine using a gear govenor, usualy staight cut gears so noisy!

Ah right, many thanks. Being a hit and miss though it will tend to stay cooler than a throttle goverend engine.
@steamwally I wouldn't that it runs hotter than a water cooled engine, but it does get to operating temperature more quickly.
Runs very niceley. I find these old air cooled hit and miss engines very interesting, do they getting much hotter than their water cooled versions?
