For many, particularly those without a tennis background, topspin can seem elusive. Navratil’s approach, however, makes it accessible even to beginners to add this shot to their pickleball playbook, emphasizing simplicity and precision over power or flamboyance.
Zane begins by breaking down the mechanics of topspin, emphasizing the importance of starting with basic motions. He suggests a straightforward drill: placing the ball on top of the net and attempting to hit it off without the paddle touching the net. This drill focuses on getting the paddle below the ball's level and brushing up and over it. The objective is to create a spinning motion as the ball moves end over end.
This fundamental technique helps players develop a feel for topspin without the complexity of full-swing shots. By focusing on the paddle’s motion relative to the ball, players can start to grasp the nuances of generating spin and enhance pickleball performances as a result.
One of Navratil’s key observations is the tendency for players to overcompensate when trying to incorporate topspin. Zane notes that many mimic tennis players, taking large, exaggerated swings that often lead to inaccuracy and missed shots. This is particularly problematic during dink shots, where precision is crucial, and the distance to the opponent is minimal.
Navratil advises against these large swings. Instead, he recommends smaller, controlled motions. By reducing the swing size, players can maintain better control and gradually build their topspin capabilities that enhance pickleball performances for most. This incremental approach ensures that players develop a reliable foundation before attempting more complex shots.
For players looking to advance their topspin skills, Navratil suggests a methodical approach to adding such shots to their pickleball playbook. Start small and build incrementally. As players become comfortable with the basic motion and can consistently apply topspin to their dinks, they can gradually introduce more swing and power.
To practice topspin from the baseline, Navratil points players to additional resources, suggesting drills and exercises that can help transition the skill from close-quarters play to the longer shots required in baseline rallies.
Zane Navratil’s strategies for promoting topspin in pickleball are a testament to the importance of technique over power. By focusing on simple, controlled motions and gradually building on a solid foundation, players of all levels can incorporate topspin into their game. Navratil’s approach demystifies topspin, making it an attainable skill rather than an intimidating challenge. For pickleball enthusiasts eager to enhance their play, his insights offer a clear, actionable path to improvement.

Have you done female pro’s vs male 5.0’s?
Is this satire or a sketch?
Prefer not to see this in split screen
I’m a wrist snapper for the overhead angles and usually keep them in 95% of the time
😂😂😂 great now I need to learn to juggle with my kid sized hands then train to rapid throw 😂😂😂 Great creative drill ❤❤❤
That’s exactly what I need to work on!! Excellent timing!!! Thank you!!
I just joined , trying to learn , thank you
I tried to return one of Zane‘s serves in a 2021 clinic. I didn’t get knocked over, but I missed by about 4 feet or more, the serve was so unbelievably hard and spun away at a crazy angle.
They don't know the simple rules of pickleball! How they were in the kitchen and smashing the ball with out letting it bounce!🤦🏻
Clear, concise, and backed by your clear level of success. Thanks!
is there a discount code for the paddle?
what grip do you use btw zane or is it for all grip
Hey Zane, how do you set up your paddle?
I've been struggling to hit topspin dinks, and something that has helped me is to keep my wrist more locked. Not sure if this is correct but I am seeing a difference for sure.
Hey Zane! I would love to experience your tip for two minutes!
GAY

LMAOO
The “ STaRt YoUR EngiNEsssssS “ caught me off guard 😂
Very helpful video! I have a question is Anyone using Oliver-Sport paddle? Curious to hear your thoughts?
Pros with just their hands vs 3.0’s
I have been using this at the NVZ for a few years, having been taught by Steve Dawson and another pro at Bobby Riggs. It takes some getting used to, but imo the advantages outweigh the negatives. Heavier topspin off the backhand roll volley, more forward contact point along with MUCH increased velo and angles on the punch volley. Defending hand battles is increased as well, because you can hit the forehand with the same grip (The Scorpion), just rolling the paddle from left to right, hitting the ball with the same side of the paddle. Much quicker. No grip change necessary. I change grips to dink or the ball gets too low, which is easy because the ball has to slow down to hit the kitchen (think drop). Not user friendly when ball is much lower than the net. I have seen him teaching very young players (10-12 year olds) this grip before they have have established grips.
Half the time the 5.0's forgot they could go into the kitchen.
Would love to see a pros vs 5.0s training paddle video
Pro's with training paddles vs 5.0s
Poo good idea
How about Pros using training paddles vs 5.0s?
Great drill
I outweigh Zane by almost 100 lbs and I always think in my head when I hit a drive "why does he make my drives look like dinks", I've wanted this tutorial for a long time 😆
Tyra taking detailed notes on this video
Nice!! This actually showed a lot of info in a NOT very long video.. Even showed slo-mo and angle of balls being hit into the court. Good job..
"Personally I'm a big throat guy"
Pickle dog
Do those holes in the wall behind you have good stories?
You are the best!
2 Ernies, 1 ATP and a fake hit in the same point? Wut.
I have to comment that there's a key in this vid I've never heard that has massively helped my drives and it's where he says make contact a little in front and not to your side. It's massively helped my hits go harder and be more accurate
While your drill partner made all the returns, regardless of how your served, the returns on the serves with height seemed slower, providing opportunity for third shot attack. No?
Tip #0: Have a tennis background
🔥
🔥
Ooooh, pros play with ping pong paddles. Or some other kind of object with a handle that would make contact more difficult
What grip tape would you recommend?
Your a Guru!!! Pickleball hitting smoothly explained!!! Thanks
But during any serve a player isn’t standing straight up so the ball will be closer to the belly button than what he’s showing in this video.
Agree that only drop serve should be allowed. I went to drop serve a year ago just to stop the is it or isn't it legal dramas. I do a heavy cut serve and find it very effective.
Proxr needs to release a wooden paddle now 😆
as a 4.0 player, key to our success is hitting returns deep to establish net presence. while we prefer topspin drives, mixing it up on spins should always be factored
Its called wrist pronation
Ok so pickleball instruction is about 20 years behind tennis too.
Great video.
Great Vid!!
Id rather watch wheelchair tennis. At least they have a reason for the game to be so slow
Whatever
....... then just watch that instead.? Nobody woke up today and said "hey guys let's make sure we convince mattmayes7510 to watch the PPA tour"
Pros can only hit backhands.
