Photography 189: As one door closes!
Well, Riverview will soon be a memory. As we prepare to move this may well be my last video from this location (or not, we shall see). Ten years worth of memories will go along with me on my next adventure. Stay tuned.

Well, a little news, a few sample shots and the required gear component. I did not attempt to fix the opening 12 seconds of terrible audio so please for give me. It is a very busy time right now. I hope you enjoy the video. Oh, and I am now a member of the 6MP Club again... Some things never go away!
Photography 187: Projects and "What's in my Camera Bag? (Clickbait)"
zhlédnutí 361Před 4 měsíci
Well, it seems that loosing my office (packing up to move in a few months but that space needs a thorough culling) I am back to square 1 on audio. This episode I shall loosely refer to as the clickbait episode, just as a test. Be sure to comment if you have anything to add to this discussion on how gear attracts more views than photos do.
Sunday Seisiun : A Project
zhlédnutí 228Před 4 měsíci
For the past five years I have been involved in a project that I didn't even recognize as a project until these past few months. The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada has a Sunday tradition through much of the year, an Acadian jam session. Traditional Acadian French music (along with other pieces) played by a large group of musicians for fun (and some tips). The musi...

Well, it seems I am pumping out videos pretty fast but... It may be a symptom of the winter blahs. It isn't Seasonal Affective Disorder, that term is reserved for people who truly need help in dealing with the stress of winter. No, it is just that mild lethargy that comes with short cold days and long colder nights. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy my little talk on this common photographic ailment.
Oh Dear, It's Gear 14: A tour of what I laughingly call a "Studio"

Well, I have almost gotten sound figured out, the next challenge is making the video from my two cameras look alike. The older VG10 gives a somewhat cool muted effect while the NEX 5N is warm and punchy. I have two purposes with my videos, the first is the enjoyment of presenting to an audience (40 years of teaching is hard to give up cold turkey), and the second is learning (for its own sake)....

Well, it was a project but just started as a fun vacation idea. I have done a couple of other "stories" based on my little LEGO character, and if there is enough response I will do a future video about his exploits. Enjoy. Well, when some photography friends suggested a road trip, it seemed like a fine way to at least get some more incentive to photograph. I've settled on a older dell workstation with 32 gBs of RAM, does everything I need and more and I've always been a Windows user, so i feel at home. Gear wise, I've not been shooting much because of lack of time, but when I do its usually my pentax DSLR or ricoh GR3, not my mirrorless fuji that's getting used. I've also started printing out $1 of instant 4*6 prints at my local camera store from pictures i am taking on my phone - cheap way to keep the creative embers stoked. Nice to see you again and looking forward to the next one

More gear! I knew it! Just kidding. Have you ever considered buying vintage lenses? They are mostly full frame, but will work on your 4/3 using the center and best part of the lens. They have sometimes a very interesting bokeh and a "je ne sais quoi" only old lenses got. Should I mentioned they are very cheap? They are not fast lenses, but for landscapes it works, they are compact, light, small and often got a very nice metal finish. Good luck for your move.

I have some M series and K series Pentax lenses which date from the 1970s but that’s about it for vintage glass. Manual focus can be a challenge for me, in spite of over 20 years experience with MF SLRs.

Hi Ira, I always enjoy your rambling videos. Also enjoy the fact you continue to embrace great cameras that are not recent releases. A good camera in 2015 is still a good camera. I did have the 12-50 but it rarely focussed accurately (despite which camera body it was attached to) must have been a duff copy. However I was lucky enough to have obtained the Oly 12-45 f4 which for me is ideal.

Thanks, I really enjoy your videos as well and (here we go with gear again) because I also primarily shoot m4/3 and enjoy wandering streets with a camera. Except for a 12MP E-PM1 all of my cameras are 16MP OM-D models. I often use the lenses in this video for walk about where larger, heavier, more expensive glass would give little advantage. For my musician shots it was mostly the Lumix 25mm f1.7 (non-Leica). Hope the leg is feeling better.

Good presentation about the FOV for new comers. I would add that what makes a good portrait lens, is not the 85 mm forced distance or shallow DOF, but it is psychological distance that a person memorized a someone's face. And that is 4.5-5 meters. When we recall or we are asked to explain someone's look as their face, we remember that as we saw them from 4.5-5 meters. Not how we saw them at 2-3 meters or 1-2 meters. This is a key for portraiture photography, we should use this psychological event in human minds to create better portraits. For thst we need to know what a "portrait" means, and that is a bust... So from chest to little above head. That is about 50x70 cm framing IIRC. And to get that from 4.5 meters... We need 8-9° vertical FOV. And focal length to offer this on small format (35mm), is 200mm. At 450 cm the 200mm lens offers a - Framing size as 810x540 mm, so you have space to crop later better. - Lens set to f/4 a DOF as 112 mm. That covers just tip of the nose to corner of eye, but ears are out of focus, so you need about f/6.3 to have a 177mm DOF, and now you have ears too in focus, especially if head turned slightly. But you want f/3.5-4 to have totally out of focus background, that is unrecognizable. - You have best perspective to facial structure and form. Get good distance from the person, make lighting easier and you get to more freedom to control background by choosing perspective and camera angle. With small movement you can change background Bokeh completely, but you can as well include foreground Bokeh as well by shooting through some objects etc. for a 4/3" format the equivalent lens is 100mm f/2-2.8. Closest is really a 40-150mm f/2.8 @ 100mm and f/2.8 or 75mm f/1.8 @ f/2. For APS-C it is 135mm @ f/2.8-4 lens. For portraits one needs to include the face, the character (dress, hairstyle etc) and it needs really about 15-20 cm DOF (150-200 mm). So more and not less... The focal length doesn't change DOF, as on same format the same F-stop will produce identical DOF when subject magnification is same (subject fills same size in frame). So 24mm f/5.6 has same DOF as 200mm f/5.6 when person face is same size in frame. But 200mm will produce far blurrier background because it crops the background far more and enlarged it compare to 24mm. Why one should shoot with longer focal length to get blurrier background, but use higher F-stop to get deeper DOF to get whole face in focus. Superior compared to 50mm or 85mm f/1.2 lenses...

I have been having fun with it and my plan is to follow along ... not jump around, (much ), and just do the page as I come to it. Some will be shot digital. Some have been shot on film. I am also old. My74th is coming soon. Most of my cameras are also old. I have looked ahead so I know which camera I want for certain pages and I have an idea of where a few shots might taken. This book has helped with my attitude this past month.

Hi Ira, Yes, sorting, editing is key to have a chance to browse our pictures later. Since a decade or so, I have decided to not limit myself in shooting, but I commit to keep only 10-15 pictures max per site we visited during our trips. This is an average of 40-60 pics per day. It seems hard to do, but it is not after all. Of course I keep all original pics on two 5TB drive in case of.I need to go back to them. What do i do with the pics I have selected? I watch them on a high resolution digital frame I could share with friends/family. Actually the device is running sometimes all day on our kitchen counter. Thank you Ira!
