I post all kinds of videos. Probably mostly Jeep videos. I am a hobby mechanic and my goal is to rebuild Jeeps. You will most likely not find Jeeps newer than a 1995 YJ featured in my videos. I like old Jeeps. And I like working on them.
I also do an occasional product review. Not too often though.

I'm working on my 3.4 and I'm about to install the new cam bearings. For the middle 2 bearings do you just tap them all the way through the first slot? It doesn't look like there is any other way to get them where they need to be
Hi - I can't perfectly recall. But I do seem to remember that I had to put the 3rd journal bearing from the rear and the 2nd from the front... Are you having the engine out of vehicle?
That's the smallest little motor I ever did see.😮
Takes me back to my 86 XJ. Had the chrome grill and side mirrors. Vent windows all harvested from the pick n pull. Miss that little 4 banger…
These trucks are so much fun! Every now and again I add another thing or fix another bug... Good little trucks.
Thanks, will keep this in mind. Replacing a timing chain in a 1978 AMC 360 in the next few days. Never understood “why” not just start and finish with the dots facing each other? This timing chain seems to have what you mentioned as an important step (that I am sure most miss). Have a reprint of the 1978 manual but have not read the section for timing chain yet. Will before replacing. The previous owner thinks the chain is off a tooth, but seems it would run like ass if that was the case, and it isn’t doing that bad. Thanks for the video.
Good luck w the project sir! And thank you for checking out the video. Glad you found it useful.

Thank you for the video demonstration. Please keep your targetted audience in mind; I doubt children will search for this video. There's no reason to have a chipmunk voice.
It’s something my video editor used to do. Thanks for the feedback -
Is there a video on you starting it after rebuild?
Currently doing brakes, steering, electrical, dash, etc….. honestly I’m so nervous to start it. I’ll probably hire my mobile mechanic for this start up. I’m in no rush.
What's up with the changing speed of the video? I guess the creator must think that sounding like a mouse or as if he has just breathed in helium is a good and professional sounding effect? BAH!! Look: Just because you can does not mean you should.
Hi - thanks for the feedback!
He sped up the parts that we would fast forward through anyways. How about a thank you for the vid lol

You are a true hot rodder sir. Taki g simething as wild and off the wall stuff like a tornado and making it fit your chasis. Its not run of the mill shit like a sbc or sbf. I commend you sir
Hello Sir - I applaud your comment! Just for clarification the engine and trans/tc are all stock to the Jeep. They just don't make ALL of the parts anymore so I must be creative.
Hey could you go through and do a quick timing video of your 230 tornado on your jeep I've been struggling for months. It could be wear on my engine but could you make a video so I can see if I'm doing it right? Please
Hi - I did do a video. Search for ‘timing for jeep 230 tornado’ and it should come up.
Hi, is it possible to convert power steering to manual steering gear box? Tired of leaking steering oil. (not rack & pinion)
I believe there is always a way. Some creative thought and hard work can get it done.
Thanks for the video. I have got two Vegaboxes on my rods. As the looks of it the internals are pretty simular. One of my boxes has way over 70000 km under her belt. now I want to rebuild it but I cannot find partnumbers for the ballbearings, I hope you can put me in the right direction, regards from the Netherlands.
Hi - Check out Midwest steering - They might have some parts or know more.
thanks @@stardog16
Interesting...thanks for sharing!
Thanks for stopping by
basically what did with the longer lower control arm was, you increased your positive caster angle, thats why it feels for comfortable driving. i have the same Zone lift on my 96 XJ cherokee, but i went a different route. i installed front control arm drop brackets and adjustable upper control arms. the drop brackets correct the control arm angles, and the adjustable uppers to add caster. stock spec for caster is around +3°-+8°. on a lifted solid axle jeep you want to be on the high side of that +7°-+10° caster.
Thank you for the comment - that makes sense. I bet mine is close to +4-+5* with the different lower control arms.
I stumbled upon this by accident. Great video. I've always been interested in this stuff, even if I have never done this kind of work myself and even if I'll never own a vehicle that requires me to know about such things. In my quest to understand these things, though, I've come to appreciate those old-fashioned closed knuckles because of exactly what you illustrate here. Every bit of disassembly and re-assembly can be done using ordinary tools that everybody owns. In contrast, the "newer" style (dating back to the late '60s and early '70s, ha-ha) of axles with open knuckles and ball joints require special tools and massive amounts of brute force for disassembly. They are hell to take apart and are very finicky to get properly adjusted during re-assembly (for example, I learned that a whole generation of Dodge pickups were plagued with ball-joint failures while still almost new, because so many of them had the ball-joint adjustments improperly performed at the factory). And it's my understanding that after several years, the adjusting ring on the top ball joint almost always seizes into the top of the knuckle and can't be spun, and since there's very little gripping surface for the tool that turns it, this can ruin the whole knuckle. Modern open knuckles are faster to put together *the first time* using automated equipment in the factory, but nothing about the design is friendly to the truck's future owner. Everyone seems to think that these closed knuckles are more complicated than the new style, but actually they are as simple as can be. I appreciate this clip.
Thank you for the great comment! The more time passes the more i appreciate simplicity in design.
i just got done putting that screw back in! next the pickup tube, head, oil pump and distributor....
Yessir! Onward and upward my friend!
Hi, I have 86 2.8l cherokee... When you ported to 3.4l, where you able to install mechanical fuel pump on probably camaro engine or ported to electric pump? And are you still using original Rochester carb? Cheers, your channel is interesting for me!
The 3.4 blocks do not have a location for the mechanical fuel pump so an inline was selected. I am running the Rochester. It’s a very good combination in my opinion.
Looks like a carpenter hammer to me
Pro-Tip. Hit this twistie driver thingy with this nail driver thingy. But just the tip, mind you.
It worked beautifully! Thanks amigo
Your video would be a lot more helpful if you use the proper name of tools, instead of "tool like this," It's an impact driver, dude.
Thanks Carl. You had a great appearance on Aqua Team Hunger Force. My ‘tool like this’ works just the same as your ‘impact driver’. Have a great day.
its called an impact driver, we all had them back in the day in our tool boxes. not to be confused with an impact wrench, which you now find in everyones tool boxes as well.
I have used it numerous times as well. Very handy and serves a specific purpose.
yes i have used those tools, and they can be a prodject saver
Thanks Phil! These tools are pretty awesome!
That’s a real truck 👍🏼
Yessir! It’s a slow roll on the rebuild. But one day I’ll have it running and I’ll do a video on it.
He leído ese problema. Voy a ver cómo sale este rebuild. Habrá un vídeo cuando pasa.
This is why you don't throw away batteries
Now we know.
Hola, este no es el 2500 VM de culatines verdad?saludos.
No idea señor de lo que hablas. Este motor es el motor de 4 cylinders 2.5L de un Jeep Wrangler 1995.
Can you give a guess at what’s wrong with my 2.5L? When the engine is cold, I have a dull tick when I rev the motor and it turns onto more like a knock if I drive it. Once the engine gets warm the sound goes away. When cold, no sound when idling. It needs load make the sound.
Could be piston slap. As the engine warms the steel expands and everything fits tighter.
@@stardog16 I’ll drop the oil pan and inspect the pistons from below, I’ve seen people unbolt the connecting rod and check piston movement and wrist pin play. I’ll look at the crank runout if I can figure out how to do that with the tools I have. I’ve been eliminating all the engine noises and hoped to do so without doing a complete rebuild but I’m heading that way. The parts are relatively cheap tho so fortunately I’m ok with it this time.
Probably a piston slap!
These boots are dope bro .
The best boots I have ever had. I’m currently moved on to the danner steel yard 8”. They are heavier duty but not as comfortable as the quarry boots.
It's kind of hard to tell the difference in the video- what did you think of it hearing it in person? Is it louder? Deeper? Or about the same?
The sound was a lot easier to stomach in ALL rpm ranges. I since have sold the Jeep. If I ever have a 2.5 w stock muffler it is a swap I’ll do right away.
Which bellhousing/trans bolt pattern did this engine use?
I believe there was only the 1 bell housing. I ended up buying 2 additional bell housings for parts. It is connected to a T89D.

where did you buy a tensioner
Hi - the tensioner came w the original parts of the engine.
Did you get the swap completed and how does it run compared to the 2.8
Hi - yes I did! It has about 5k on the motor. The output is stark compared to the 2.8. I can lay a 10’ patch from stop in the truck now.
great to see a tornado 230 being brought to life again. very rare and not common to find.
Yes sir! It is yet to start. I’ll do a starting video soon enough.
@@stardog16 Great!!!!👏👏👊
Nice and slow on each step we’ll done. Thanks
Hello Amigo! Thanks for the encouraging words! Have fun out there!
Just bought 2 of these today, not know anything about them because they looked cool. This video confirm my suspension.
Good luck on the adventure. The 230 Tornado crowd is cult at best. Very little info. But when you find another 230 guy then it is a really fun chat.
Nice old Jeep. Very clean body ,must be from California or the desert southwest area. I have a 1966 J-2000 7'-0" body pickup with 7'-6" Meyer snowplow which is still my plow truck in winter. It looks like yours has the Tornado Six engine and 3 speed transmission. Mine has the AMC 232 Six and three speed transmission. Rebuilt mine from the cab back in 1993 with all new frame, springs, gas tank and pickup body from a 1977 Jeep and made my own tailgate. Good luck with your project and hope you get it back on the road soon!
Thanks for tuning in friend - it has been a good adventure. Lot more to get done before this old truck rolls on the highway again.
He looks to be too cold. They won't eat until the weather warms up so he can digest his food. In the summer the dark brown color on his back is almost bleached out to white of a light tan color. I hope you put him back into his hole.
He was a beautiful specimen. He put himself back in his hole.
Did it come with the bell housing dust cover? Mine’s missing and I can’t find one anywhere
The little circular silver metal mesh thing w the 3 retention prongs?
No. The big cover on the bottom that makes an appearance at 5:32 in the video
@@couturc i just saw your reply. Mine did come w one. I actually have 2 extras. Did you still need one?
@@stardog16 I do still need one. Where are you located?
Its going to rely on the oil pump at the other end for stability. Its important that little to no slop is noted at the rotor end otherwise the point gap will be inconsistent and noticeable on a dwell meter.
Hi - once it was installed it was quite solid. I don’t know how to use a dwell meter. It’s on the list of things to do. Thanks for watching!
Can the king pins be replaced without taking everything apart?
Thinking about the procedure I think you can. It’s only 4 bolts per pin then I’m pretty sure the would come right off. I would be more worried about if it should be done. There might be old practices that young builders like me don’t know.
@@stardog16 I should have been more specific, but I think I've found my answer since leaving the original comment, whether or not the king pin bearings/races/etc could be replaced without taking the entire axel apart and I think the answer to that is no.
Sweet. I ended up getting a chromed one from one of the local parts stores. I think it was for a Big Block Chevy if I recall
That’s awesome! Which fuel pump are you selecting?
