The Mighty Mac | Crossing the Mackinac Bridge
A quick drive over the "Mightly Mac" , otherwise known as the Mackinac Bridge. The fare/toll for our truck/trailer combo (2 axles on the truck, and 2 on the trailer) came out to $8 USD in June 2023. The website says $5 per axle for motorhomes. And if you're towing a car behind that, it'll be charged at the auto rate of 2$ per axle.
The following information can be found on the Mackinac Bridge Authority website, www.mackinacbridge.org/
The Mackinac Bridge is currently the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world. In 1998, the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge in Japan became the longest with a total suspension of 12,826 feet. The Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the western hemisphere.

    You might want to consider not getting your tow vehicle and trailer in to much of an angle causing side loading on your axles. Just watch your tires how much they scuff when you turn to tight. If you bend a piece of metal back and forth it will break. Side loading your axles back and forth is going to do damage.

    On the back side of your "rim/wheel", there will be a "max air pressure" value. You must not exceed that pressure. Example: My travel trailer came with 225/75r-15 "D" load range tires (max psi is 80). The wheels are marked, 80 psi max air pressure. I am upgrading to a "F" load range tire with a max psi of 95. Although I can inflate the tires to 95 psi, I have to stay within the limit of the wheel, which is 80 psi.

    So you installed a new transfer switch. Without first reading the manual? And you call yourself an, Engineer? What? You're not an engineer? I see. Of course. I am. I will not install, anything. Anything. Before I read the manual completely through. At least once if not twice. Sometimes three times. And then have it handy. And all of my test gear. While I am doing the install. So as not to get anything wrong. Right out of the gate. I like things to work properly. Right from the get go. So I always read and study the manual well, first. Sometimes it will even take me, 10 minutes! LMAO. I had to use a Digital Audio Console for NBC-TV News in Washington DC. This thing was so sophisticated. They gave us an entire Looseleaf Notebook Manual. And it took us about 3 months. To get this digital beast under our belts. We did mock TV shows. Before we ever did a real one from that control room. They were full blown TV shows. As if we were on the air. Every day. Until everything became Muscle Memory. Only then. After being well-versed with the manuals and the operation of the gear. Did we head out, On Air, again. From that New Control Room. As this would happen every couple of years. At the upper echelon level. I got to be a part of for a couple of decades. So I guess it's almost like being in the military? Though. I was never in the military. But working for a Major Television Network. I think is kind of like that. When the Productions come together, Multiple Times, Daily. Along with the live shots out in the field and all that. Satellite feeds from elsewhere in the world. And elsewhere in the USA. It can get hectic. And you don't want to crash and burn in front of hundreds of thousands if not millions of people. So you best be the, best. And I was one of those Best's's's. I joke about that but it's really no joke. When I got hired by NBC. They were still owned by RCA. Another prominent American, Contractor. Of some of the world's greatest,, Broadcast Equipment. And they owned, NBC. And they only hired. The Best Engineers, in the World. Somehow they hired me? I don't know how I slipped through? They must have been desperate? As they must've desperately needed me. To keep me around for 20 years. And give me an open-ended contract. But after 20. I figured.. That was long enough. I wanted to do my own thing, still. I already had been doing it as a side hustle. And side hustle overlapped,, day job by 10 years. That was good enough. Working 2 jobs for, 10 years. Never really having a weekend of my own. Nor vacation. No time for that. What do I want to vacation from? I'm doing everything I always wanted to do. In my Professional Life. It was so cool! Now I'm supposed to be retired. I'm bored out of my mind! And now my husband of 22 years has passed. I'll never be the same again. I don't know what to do with myself? I don't know where to go? But I have to leave. I now become House Less. And no more permanent Address. Which I have to reestablish yet. I have a lot to do after I move out at the end of the month. Because that's it. I can get to the end of August. I need to put a push on. I'm not sure that I can? I'm disabled. I'm handicap. I'm old. I'm all alone. My stamina is gone. I'm not sure what's next? I am not currently having a good time of any sort. I'm going through misery. RemyRAD

    OK… OK… So you didn't know anything about automatic transfer switches. And you didn't know how to control your, drinking. Gotcha. Check. I understand, fully. You were distracted in school. So was I. I know how it feels. I did have a problem with alcohol. They gave me Ritalin. Starting when I was 10 years old. Or was it 11? I forget? I'm almost 69. I survived that episode. And so I never, Speed. In my Motorhome. I'm a, Speed Free RV. Though I do get a little caffeine from mine, Unsweet Iced teas. Which I love. And if I have more than one big one per day. I can be driving all night. Because there will be no sleeping for me. I'm very sensitive to caffeine and speed. Speed feels miserable. I don't know what the attraction is? Why don't people get more sleep? Are they having too much fun daily? Everybody needs a lot of speed and caffeine? I don't get it? I don't want it. I don't need it. I am a Speed Free RV. I really used to love all kinds of coffees. From around the world. But they are high in caffeine. And decaffeinated coffee sort of taste like, coffee. So when I need that coffee flavor. I go for the Decaf. Now alcohol I don't have any problems with. A 6 pack of beer. Might take me a week, to get through. I like it was my steak dinner. I like it with my spaghetti dinner. I like it with my chili dinner. One beer. With dinner. It makes me feel young. Like I just started out in Broadcasting, again. Because you can't slur your words when trying to read the weather. And that's where, POT. Works, so much better. So, I'm a, Free High RV. And you never go too fast. Because you stayed nice and low and laid-back. The Free Laid-back RV… Even though it cost me $25,000. Chicken feed! I got a great deal. From an old retired couple. I will be just like in 20 years. She was 85 he was 88. It was time to hang up the, old RV. They had a beautiful home. It was beautiful inside and out. So I know they took good care of it. Even though they were not the original purchaser. They said they could have been the second or more? They purchased it from a retired couple. So they were at least second. Perhaps more? They weren't certain they said. But everything is so new and so stock to the manual. I asked about their grandchildren? They said they had 14. And the motorhome was not for them. It was only for the two of them. They told me. I guess so they could get away from their 14 grandchildren? I understand perfectly. I never had any children. So I will never be burdened like that. That's, far too many grandchildren. For old folks in their 80s to contend with. As it really only sleeps, 2 more than them. So yeah, no. LOL. I've never heard such things from a grandparent before. But I haven't known any that had 14. LMAO. RemyRAD

    Alcohol Free RV? I'll be right over! What kind of beer you got? No? You ain't got no beer? I thought it said, alcohol Free RV. Is the RV Free? No? What are you selling here? An RV with no alcohol? What's the matter with you man? Are they still letting you drive? Yes I can understand with an, Alcohol Free RV. Having trouble with your automatic Transfer Switch. It can be very difficult. It's always a work in progress. Yours switch. Will never be recovered. And it is prone to, Intermittency. But not to worry. Just don't be driving when you do that. Let her drive it. She can see over the wheel just fine. Plenty of small people drive great big trucks. That are over at least,, 5 foot 3. I'm just saying… I know some. They are very nice and they smell good. Unlike yourself. Because you only have a 6 gallon hot water tank on your RV. Bummer! I use one of those water restrictive showerheads. It works really good. I can still take a, 20 minute shower if I want to. With nice hot water. Good and hot, water. And that's with an electrically heated,, hot water tank. I don't like running propane. Propane should not be used in flammable vehicles. Electrical fires a lot easier, to deal with. Mostly they only smelled bad at first. Then you have to find out. What is going up? And switch that off as fast as you can. Pull the master breaker. Shut down the generator. Grab your fire extinguisher. And start Troubleshooting. I have had said, occurrences. Outside that of Motorhomes. And managed, to save, the gear. With a quick shutdown. Then I found what smoked. It was an electric motor. Let your nostrils, be your guide. And you can get the show back on the road. Or engineer yourself around it. Until you get to a proper city. With, services, available. You limp in if you have to. That's why they are usually secondary roads to the Interstate Highway. We're 35 mph is no big deal. If you have to. Because you don't want to be doing that on the interstate with your flashers on. If, you don't have to. So don't. Not everybody is paying full attention. You could be impeding a person who is not paying attention. Which doesn't usually happen the same way on secondary roads. Pull off and quickly check, clearance fights. Before you continue on. Otherwise you could find yourself backtracking for quite a distance. And having to turn around. Always a significant, annoyance. I've not had anything like that happen to me. I sort of fancied becoming a Trucker. In my much earlier life. As I knew a guy who was. I traveled with him locally a couple times. I almost went for it. But I stayed in Broadcasting, mostly. And drove different kinds of trucks. Packed full of audio and video gear. As it later turned into a Control Room On Wheels. Both straight box trucks and semi-tractor trailer, versions. I personally owned a box truck version. For over 30 years. It's sort of like a Super Class-C. On the outside but no windows on the box. And on the inside. But only one couch. The rest are, Captains, office chairs. No bed and no bathroom. Just a Micro Kitchen. With, mini fridge/freezer,, induction cooktop, Microwave. All necessary ingredients. For an, Audio & Video Crew. Or just a single person. As the coach also folds out to a double bed. And is great at, Truck Stops. As I have batteries and inverter. To still power up the control rooms. With the audio and video playback system. So truly stellar at Truck Stops. And all the comforts of home. Like showers and restaurants, service centers and minimart. And frequently a hotel on premises. So I think I have it down. With my new used diesel pusher motorhome. As a single old widow. Packing heat. RemyRAD

    I recently purchased a wired camera system for my truck and travel trailer. It came with a twist-style connectors which are fine for one-and-done but since I'll need to disconnect it frequently, I'm looking for a more robust plug like yours (pollock plug). Can I cut the existing plug off and install a pollock or would that distort the video feed? I've asked the seller but they are not understanding my question. They keep replying the unit I purchased comes with a plug. I'm looking for something more robust than what came with the unit.

    • @AlcoholFreeAutomotive
      @AlcoholFreeAutomotive Před 2 měsíci

      I would imagine that a new connector would be fine. As woth any electrical connection, make sure you properly isolate/insulate each individual conductor. The individual conductors are extremely thin. If I were changing the plug, I would cut the plugs off that I want to replace. Then individually make up the new connections, working pin 1 on both sides, then pin 2, etc. I would solder the wires to the plug and use heat shrink on each conductor. I hope this helps!

    Please have your future welders audition for the job before you let them weld brackets. That first bracket that you showed repairs is complete dogshit of a weld. Yea, it might be working right now, but I'd be embarrassed to charge you more than $2 for that workmanship.

    That is simply not thick enough metal for that leaf spring bracket.

    We had a DRV Mobile Suites, we had made an appointment with Moryde to replace the bearings to the new ones I have heard a lot about, I forgot the name of those bearings. When we arrived at the Moryde Facility in Elkhart Indiana, a tech went under the rig to look at it, he first asked me what was the weight of the rig, he found what the weight was and informed us that one of the rubber springs had broke and the other was about to break. In looking at the part he told us that DRV when they put the axles on, they put the wrong type of rubber springs for the weight of the rig and that caused the break and the uneven wear on the tires. We didn’t know any of this, we brought our rig in for the bearings to be replaced as the rig was 1 year old already. The tech told me to forget the bearings for now, this was a serious issue that needed to be fixed which thank God that part was still under warranty. That part for one was $1500, and they needed to replace all of them. The tech couldn’t believe we never had a serious blow out and accident because of the inferior rubber springs they used. The tech asked if we ever had sway on the rig, we said we had once coming into Kerrville Tx. But blamed it on the road. He said nope, that was the rubber spring failure. Plus he told us they trained the techs at DRV to install the brake lines inside the frame not outside so in case you had a blow out it wouldn’t tear up the brake line because that was the most expensive repair to do. Ours were installed on the outside of the frame which made sense to me. So all we paid for was to move the brake lines inside the frame and new bearings all the way around. We didn’t get the ones I wanted but the expense would’ve been higher had we done them. That was why he told us to not worry too much on those bearings for now and to take care of the most needed repairs that were the rubber springs. Still ended up spending $1900.00 all together out of pocket, for moving break lines inside of frame and new original bearings, one set the tech showed me were already metal on metal.

    I can see buy where it was welded to "edge" of a very thin flange. This was more like a seem weld not a structural weld. You need to "split" a piece of tubular steel, with at least a 3/16" wall thickness, to fit the inside profile of the primary wide flange chassis section so that it extends a minimum of 2/3 the height. And flush with the tubular section reinforcing the beam. Add a tab plate, 3/8 inch thick each side, to attach your spring assembly. Have that tab plate extend at least 6 inches on the reinforcing split tube in the primary support beam and use "fillet" welds, NOT SEEM WELDS. RV axle connections are some of the worst deigns I have ever seen. And will fail over time due to lack of lateral restraint and very thin material. At minimum I can see they added in the form of a tubular (HSS) section to frame at the axles. But I bet they didn't do anything to stiffen the web of the primary load carrying member, the I beam, or wide flange as technically know. Remember, 90% of the weight of your RV is sitting right at these points. This is basic structural steel 101. Thanks for listening.
