this shot to the top of my favorite LiS video essays, and i will definitely be checking out Gone Home i like your point about how choosing to save Chloe goes beyond the game. some arguments for sacrifice Chloe are about morality and pragmatism, but they kind of forget that *that* particular choice just stays in the game. it neatly wraps up the story and is a fitting end to the player experience. but while both endings can be argued for, i could never bring myself to sacrifice chloe. we spend the whole game falling in love with her-for what? only to make her sacrifice sadder? you articulate it so well; in choosing to save Chloe, we're pushing back against the industry's cishet norm. queer people are here, have always been, and stories of our joy deserves to be told just as much as our tragedies. like yeah, LiS *is* the gay game series-what of it? that doesn't mean it's devoid of nuance or that it's empty "pandering". the way it's unafraid to lean into queer themes, instead of making a token show of a few flags and vapid quotes, makes the writing so much better. even if it's sad to hear that queer narratives still need to be fought for (it's 2024, for god's sake) it's a testament to the writers' commitment to their vision for the story and the fanbase's support for queer stories, and honestly a triumph over shitty homophobic executives

Still my favorite isekai anime to this day. It really does feel so much different than the rest, and I value that a lot. Subaru as a protag is fascinating to watch, and it really hits different to rewatch this series when you have the full context of his character and why he acts the way he does. He's incredibly complex, and while some people might not like that, or they think he's annoying or hate-able for some reason, I find him incredibly well written. He's a normal guy put into a world of fantasy. Right away he acts like anyone would expect from an isekai. He thinks he's going to get powers, that he'll unlock some hidden potential or be swept off his feet by a beautiful heroine who falls head over heels for him because he's the main character. But that isn't the case. He comes to realize he truly is just a normal person in a world of magic and fantasy, etc. And he learns the hard way that everyone around him don't exist for his benefit or his happiness. Emilia isn't made for him to flaunt over or to flaunt over him as he originally hoped for, and other characters who he grew close to end up having darker intentions for him than he thought, and so forth. It's a story about a character who learns the world doesn't revolve around him just because he's the protagonist. He has to use his own wits, his emotions, and his intelligence to solve problems and become the hero he wants to be, and to understand the people in his life also have their own stories and motivations that don't have to involve him all the time. He gets stuck in the head space of being some big savior who's going to save the girl he loves and earn her devotion, but the reality of existence hits him pretty hard. He has many flaws, and those flaws come back to bite him. And eventually, it's revealed that a lot of his behavior is just a cover-up for his fears, weakness, and lack of charisma, because he _knows_ he's unlikable. He knows he can't compete with everyone else, he knows he's not as special or worthy of love, and he's not as strong or important as he kept acting or implying. He hates himself. He thinks he's nothing. So when he came into this new world of magic, power, possibilities, etc. he had hoped it would be his chance to make something of himself, to be someone who can be appreciated and actually matter. He thought he had been given a new chance to make something out his character, to start fresh, but he ended up feeling more and more hopeless and lacking of character despite all the effort and work he put in for those he loves. It's an incredibly thought provoking, complex story when you dig into it. Subarau is a very realistic protagonist, and relatable to some people even. I could never hate or dislike him for that, and this anime would absolutely not be the same if he wasn't the way he is 💙

I had watched Serial Experiments Lain on VRV/Crunchy Roll and stumbled onto the 9/11 clip looking for the OP. Seeing the text scroll made me feel... Loss would probably be the most accurate thing. Even though it was almost 23 years ago I can still remember 9/11/01. It's hard to describe how different things were on 9/10/01. I was 10 years old at the time. The best i can describe is I got to experience two different worlds. The world of what came before September 11th, and the world as it was after. I lived in Upstate NY at the time. The picturesque sleepy part of the state that the world ignores. Prior to 9/11 everything felt safe. Safe in a way you can't describe. You would just have to be there and feel it. We knew our neighbors and kids played in the middle of neighborhood streets. Our parents would let us walk to a convenience store or movie rental shop without adult supervision. On weekends it wouldn't be out of the question to stay outside playing hide and seek, capture the flag, or other kids games well after dark. After 9/11 things didn't change immediately. Then there were follow up things that sort of have faded with time. There was a mail anthrax scare, the DC Sniper, the underwear bomber, the shoe bomber, the Times Square Bomber, and half a dozen smaller plots. As the years marched on nothing the scale of 9/11 has happened since. Still, things are not the same. In 2001 things definitely felt like the US was invincible. That nobody could touch us. After 9/11 that illusion shattered. When I graduated in 2009 I joined the US Army and served an 8 year contract where friends of mine died in a country we invaded almost a decade prior. I think it's great that we have a record of the way things were following. But to he honest, I would trade a lot of things to go back to the times before. Maybe that's just nostalgia. Everyone says that you look at the past with rose shaded glasses, but I do think things were legitimately better then. More innocent, or more naive. Either way ignorance is bliss.

  • @gnoogie

5:10 Hard disagree that this is that trope. In time travel fiction, one of the most common tropes is "omg I can't save this person, they're doomed to die because I messed up the timeline. the universe wants them dead!!!". It's really as simple and innocuous as that. It's not some targeted thing. It's plain and simple star-crossed lovers type shit. I think of Steins;Gate as the most similar example. Steins;Gate involves a hetero couple, put in a very similar situation (I would argue vastly more horrible) as Chloe and Max, and it made me feel the exact same way as I did playing Life is Strange. I can relate to characters in horrible situations faced with horrible choices, regardless of their race, sexuality, ethnicity, gender, or whatever. If you write a good character, all of that stuff should be secondary. The inherent tragedy of this trope has very little to do with the gender or sexual orientation of the couple. Sacrificing the one person you deeply love to do the right thing and save the world/the town/whatever is a theme in fiction that has been portrayed about a million times by now, and it's something everyone on the planet can see and relate to. It's powerful. It's supposed to be hard and bittersweet and tragic. That's the whole point! It's not intentionally done at the expense of gay people! Again, I really don't think the whole "I'm sorry, but to save everyone, I have to sacrifice you" trope is as biased and specifically targeted as you say. Life is Strange NEVER paints Chloe as expendable. The game hyper focuses on how important and irreplaceable Chloe is and how big of a deal it is to save her, over and over. There is simply no hidden messaging that tells us Chloe is only destined for tragedy because of her sexuality. I'm sorry, but I have to say I find that absurd! Regardless, I think we as consumers have every right to interpret and rationalize and project our own meaning onto art, even if it is blatantly not the intended message. Personally? I love experiencing a good story & being moved by a narrative & empathizing with the struggles of characters I genuinely care about. All too often, I trick myself into thinking of them as real people (they're real in my head ok LOOOL). I think most fiction enjoyers fall into this category. I'm genuinely sorry if anyone reading this has struggled with their identity because of their sexuality, but that is also not a uniquely queer experience to have either; we are all way more similar than we are different, and usually, experiences that feel so personal & unique to our lives are pretty much universally felt by all of us, even if our relationships, life experience & struggles don't look 1:1 the same at first glance.

I think what makes the video so compelling is what makes Royal Space Force compelling; it's a time where a new technological innovation, in its early stages, hasn't yet revealed or developed into the shape it would become, Honneamise being the advent of human spaceflight during a time of conflict between two nations, and Lain being a look into the social-psychological effects of the internet. The internet of 2001 and the internet of today are two significantly different beasts but Lain remains in its contemplations of how those sucked into the excitement and horror of the internet can affect the way we perceive reality, like Videodrome's relationship to television before it. The quintessence of the fascination of the Lain video stems from the intersection of societal turning points. The development of the internet and the changes 9/11 would bring to the world would be absolute heralds of the end of the era before it, a reminder of just how different the world was at the time, as it was in the process of change. From the point of view of those watching this live, we didn't know what exactly was going to happen next, in that moment, versus us now, viewing it and knowing exactly what happened next. A true, bona-fide piece of history.

9/11 was such a weird day. I was in High School, 9th grade. All we had were rumors in the halls and one teacher with a black and white tiny camping TV with an antenna that barely got a picture. There was this eerie silence and heavy feeling in the air. A lot of people were worried we'd be next, as if this was some nation wide attack. Some kids were crying because they knew people in New York. This was before Cell Phones were really a thing and the internet was basically non existent, so there was no outside communications or live information. I remember coming home and all the channels were playing either clips of the actual planes hitting the buildings or just were just blank. Some channels were playing normal things but had a scrolling text like the Lain clip. It was such a bizarre time that would only ever be rivaled by the VERY early stages of the lockdown during the Pandemic in 2020.

It’s for these reasons, that I so sincerely hope that Double Exposure doesn’t kill Chloe off OR break her and Max up. I’m not even queer; I’m as heterosexual as they come. But I also believe in a better world, one that doesn’t discriminate against people based solely on their ethnicity, country of origin, gender, sex, culture or sexual orientation. And the world we live in as of now is an absolutely sinister one, and I’m absolutely sick and fed the fuck up with seeing most same-sex couples across pop culture either die or break up/get divorced, almost always ending in tragedy. Double Exposure has some MIGHTY thin ice to tread across. Because if they break it, they’ll be undoing that act of rebellion you talked so passionately about in this video. And now, knowing all these details not only about the structure of the original game that I never noticed before, but ALSO what went on behind the scenes of True Colors? In case it wasn’t clear, I genuinely have some concerns about Double Exposure.

One of the best recommendations I've ever received from a small channel. Regarding anime and 9/11, here in Brazil there was one of the biggest cases of the Mandela Effect that has ever happened. In 2001, Dragon Ball Z was broadcast on the largest Brazilian channel, TV Globo, in a time slot aimed at young people and pre-teens, in this case in the morning. For decades, there was talk that the episode of Goku's fight against Frieza, a climax, was interrupted by the news broadcast showing the attack on the twin towers. For two decades, this Mandela effect took over Brazilian imagination, with people swearing up and down that they were watching Dragon Ball at the time of the attacks. In 2023, the TV network itself denied in an article about what happened, saying that the anime wasn't even broadcast that day and another program for children was playing at the time, which could have caused this confusion.
