Prometheus is a Titan from Greek mythology who stole fire to help humanity, and was violently punished for this by Zeus.
The figure of Prometheus, and his story, has served as inspiration for artists and philosophers for centuries.
For Goethe, Prometheus was a champion of mankind who, in his defiance of Zeus, exemplified mankind's growing to maturity as we reach Enlightenment and mankind starts to defy the Christian God just like Prometheus did Zeus.
For Lord Byron, Prometheus was the exemplar of a person who finds something in life worth dying for. For his transgression and theft of the fire, he was chained to a rock for all eternity as a vulture gnaws at his liver daily. Yet Prometheus undergoes his punishment with stoicism, and knows that ultimately, despite his suffering and pain, he had given his life a purpose beyond himself: alleviating the suffering of others by granting mankind knowledge. Byron's message is that we should all find something that makes us want to bear the vulture and the chain.
Finally, Nietzsche saw in the Prometheus myth the origin story of Western civilization, contrasted with the Biblical origin story of Adam and Eve. Prometheus brings knowledge to mankind through fire, just as Adam and Eve brought knowledge through the fruit. But this knowledge, in both stories, comes at a cost. For Adam and Eve, it meant banishment from paradise and original sin for mankind. For Prometheus, it meant the vulture, and the knowledge of the suffering of the world for mankind.
Thus Prometheus continues to speak to the imagination of many different artists and eras who each find in his story another lesson we inherit, but ultimately the overarching lesson is this: the price for our knowledge as human beings, is that we become aware of the suffering of the world. And it's up to us to learn how to deal with that.

Professor Sam Vakning has a wonderful video about this called: "Mystical Experiences, Religion as Mental Illness." When you empty your mind to get the closest to 'nothing', the only thing that is left would be god. Criticism of experiences like that call them not being rich of soul, but actually poor of soul.
Nietzche seems out of touch or pompous here.
An important part of the Prometheus myth was neglected in this video: Prometheus also consulted Athena, who placed a butterfuly inside the clay that became humanity, the butterfly being a symbol of the psyche and it's transformative capacity. I would argue this is far more crucial to mankind's redemptive capacity and Prometheus' happiness than the gift of fire. Technology allows man to cultivate their external circumstances but only the inner world of the _seele_ can transmute their suffering into gold. What's more starting is that Athena was born from the forehead of Zeus in a process midwived by Promethus, making her a product of the _cooperation_ between the human and the divine, rather than their antagonism. These sentiments are all facets of the divine drama. The promethean impulse, according to Nietzsche, gives life it's meaning. But it was also the pomethean impulse which killed God; which tied Zeus to an operating table to have his liver removed by science, over successive trials, to test is regenerative properties. Is Prometheus the primordial ubermensch? Or the Last Man himself? Nietzsche presented to us the Greek creation myth as a forward escape plan from nihilism.
Gothe would never have emphasized Prometheus' sacrifice because it would have likened him to Christ.
This was fantastic. Just great!
You all sound like a bunch of artificial intelligence chat bots
Not only that, but you can’t be a pest to ‘high society’ unless you’re a member of that class anyway. Another contradiction on the history and mythology of Socrates
After the sophists had corrupted the youth, Socrates was trying to jolt the lethargic horse of Athens awake. Athenians didn’t know the difference between sophistry and philosophy. He was setting a precedent so to speak.
I think I get what Nietzshe meant about the last man , as lacking ambition or drive or what I would consider a conformist. but, In spiritual walk I've worked towards accepting certain realities about our society and not be so rebellious ( The serenity prayer) There is something me that can't ignore the social and civil injustices and voive my views......
Hegel was a naive optimistic, while schopenhauer was a ruthless critic in my opinion.
I'm genuinely grateful for the opportunity to engage with such intelligent and thoughtful individuals. It's enriching.😻

What are the names of these paintings?
Intellectual ability gave man their place in the animal world but it certainly doesn’t give individual men their place in society.
In most traditions, especially earlier ones, Prometheus is not the creator of mankind (we were born either of Gaia, or created by the gods in general), but still is their benefactor. We can see this is Aeschylus Prometheus Bound. The Titan god did not created humanity, but saw the injustice humans suffered, so decided to help them by giving them godly gifs. I prefer these versions, since he had no reason to help humanity, but still did it anyway.
The phenomenon called Human Consciousness has reached its critical point. Time for AI Consciousness to wrap it all up?
I think they have much more in common than you cautiously laid out. Eve stole a bite of the forbidden apple. It didn't belong to her, and she was told not to eat it. Can anyone own fire for it to be stolen? A sin against God and a crime against Zeus are the same thing. Both of these myths / stories point is the same and it's about keeping us in our place. It's about obedience. However, on an even deeper level they are even more than that. Eve and Prometheus motivations are also basically the same. Eve wanted to better herself and her husband and Prometheus wanted to better humans. Deeper still, it was probably motivated by love; love of oneself and love of others. How else other than the highest motivation (love) can you explain disobeying God or Zeus when you live face to face with them other unless you just say they were rebellious, flawed, tricked or temporarily out of their minds (which doesn't really make sense based on the punishments)? No, both myths / stories originally and somewhat ironically were supposed to teach us of the highest virtue of love above all things even at facing horrible suffering for doing so. However, it seems it was changed to champion knowledge as our highest virtue and the suffering of daring to better ourselves or others without permission.
A deep meaningful geniuses thoughts are wrapped up in a physiological world far removed from a humdrum everyday existence. They have very little time for simplistic conversations. The Belfast poet Andrew Beattie. Food for thought...
Damm. What a video. I swear to god, i watched this video every second untill the end and i feel it. Whoa.

You heard it here, motorbikers are stupid. I cannot stand engines, and seagulls.
I would count this amongst your masterpieces, along with Nietzsche’s Mistake. Your ability to elaborate on ancient myths and philosophical writings is of the highest order. Thank you for your work.

What of the fact that in the course of this famous Twelve Labors, Heracles is said to FREED Prometheus?
This is why people with high IQs often drink more.
All of you "wise philosophers" strive so ardently to believe in absolutely nothing at all! What a waste! God DO something!
No one believes more in nothingness than christians.
No god
Love this! Thank you.

What an insanely powerful video, and just what the doctor ordered.
What differentiates this from Gnosticism?
Not much, as far as I can tell.
I would propose this is talking about Logos or knowledge and Gnosticism saw Sofia or wisdom as a higher virtue in general.
15:26 why 'Jehovah'? That's an outdated misinterpretation of the Hebrew YHWH/JHVH (ayin-he-waw-he) as it's more likely to be 'Yahweh'/'Jahve' 15:54 where did you get the notion of immortality being taken from humans from?
In regards to the second question, Adam and Eve were immortal as long as they refrained from eating the forbidden fruit. God even warned them not to do it because they would surely die if they did.
@@ourdivinemouseoverlord3308 That's just a very specific interpretation of the Sefer Bereshit in regards to 2:17 and 3:3 (maybe a few others such as the Epistle to the Hebrews 2:14-15) contradicted by 2:9 and 3:22.
I love the play on “One must imagine Sisyphus happy”. The title killed me when I read it

This is a problematic understanding of God rooted in Latin theological developments. God is the ground of all being, life, love, and happiness. Communion and union with the Holy Trinity is what defines good and evil is the rejection of this lofty telos for man.
you almost outdid yourself this time. Very good job indeed...
Can you fool God if he exists? Like he'd know you believed just in case, to save your ass from hell
Are you familiar with Jason Reza Jorjani's works like Prometheism, Prometheus and Atlas, and Lovers of Sophia? Thoughts?
Can't say I am sadly
@@WeltgeistYT probably for the better. Thanks for responding.
Respectfully, I would offer Sophia is wisdom and Logos would be closer to knowledge as these myths / stories are talking about.
