Transform your Door with Gold Leaf Gilding
Hi there friends, in today’s video we are going to rebuild our old side garage door. We’re going to give this door a much needed upgrade and even learn a new skill of reverse gold leaf gilding. I start off this project by disassembling the old door and had to make the decision of whether or not to rebuild the same style door or try and find a door that I could modify. I made a field trip to Habitat for Humanity and found a door for $40. I later found out that door required a lot more time and effort than I had expected or wanted to do for this project. My friend Marylou from @MadeByMarylou stopped by to help assist me in cutting down the door to fit. We ran it through the table, saw to cut it down to the right width and used her track saw to cut a section of the bottom off, making the new door size 22 inches wide by 72 inches tall. This definitely is a custom door. Once I got all the paint removed and a good sanding done. I repainted the door in a flat exterior white paint. Once all the hard work of getting the door prepped, it was time for the fun part of adding the gold leaf guild. I made a design in adobe illustrator and then sent it to my @Cricut Design space where I cut out a vinyl sticker for the door and I’ll add the gold leaf gilding to the negative spaces. I made sure to mirror the design so that I could add the vinyl sticker to the inside of the door, but it would be visible to read from the outside. I definitely learned a lot while gold leaf gilding. since this was my first shot at it. I went a little too heavy on the gelatin, which was the adhesive and learned the hard way that it was extremely hard to remove the excess gold leafing so I started all over again and removed the entire thing and started from scratch. All in all it was definitely a longer project than I had expected to work on but well worth it in the end. I’m so proud of the outcome and I learned a new skill while I was at it. I’ll probably still remake this door at a later time and point but at least now I have something to keep the garage weatherproof. Thank you for sticking around and watching today’s video. I would love to hear your thoughts and ways that you’ve done this differently. Let me know in the comments.

Impressive no bubbles
Thanks friend!
Did you work out how the water was getting in?
Pretty sure the top hatch is hitting the fiber optic handle by an 1/16 of an inch keeping it from fully sealing…
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
What are the dimensions of your garaga and what size wood did you use to support the rafters? Did you have a problem getting them in place? I saw someone use 2x6x20ft but had to remove part of the roof to slide them in. Im also in so cal and cant find 20ft length
So my garage is 20 x 20 and yes, I did have to replace one of the beams in the rafters. I did a 2 x 4 x 20 I was able to get it at Ganahl lumber in Torrance. I had it delivered to me. It definitely wasn’t easy. I cut notches out of the corner and had a second person help me lift it up into place and then hammered it till it was wedged into its spot.
I hope that was helpful. Feel free to reach out with any other questions you may have.
You should put rubber seal on it like on watches and break oil tanks on cars
The rubber ring thingy. I forgor what it's called but that one.
Thank you for that suggestion that super helpful
Thanks
Nice work and video.
Thank you very much!
That is amazingly beautiful. The squid design works so well with the fibre optics.
Thank you so much!
cool tool
Thanks friend
Even though the board wasn't 100% waterproof at least it had structural integrity!
I owe 100% of the structural integrity to the TotalBoat products! Couldn’t have built this board without you guys!
Despite the seal not working, this is one of my favorite projects that you've ever made. It's an awesome concept and a stunning final piece. Great job!
Thank you so much friend! That really means a lot!
I see the rails to a Onefinity CNC to the right of your Laser. I have one but it is still in the box 3+ years later due to living alone and unable to make the bench for it.
You spotted correctly! It’s a great machine! Highly recommend setting it up when you do finally getting around to it put it on wheels so that you can move it around!
I have fishing lures that do the same thing. Be careful
Interesting, what do they do?
Such a awesome project. I was waiting for this video. I’m so jealous. It’s gotta be incredible at night. Nice getting to see Eric surf. You can make a more robust seal too and maybe adding some grease to the seal may help. Put it on thick and make a wooden tool to tighten it a little more
That’s a great idea!!!!
Thanks friend!!! Love all these ideas!!! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
Right!

I’m so in love with your channel! Just watched a bunch of your videos! Love your shed makeover too! Do you mind sharing what those led lights in the ceiling are? I NEED those in my life!!
Ahhh thank you so much! That makes my day! The lights are from American Green lights… if you chat with Jim he’s super helpful on getting you set up for the right lighting you need for your space.
I appreciate your humility. The lights worked to the end - that's a win! Thanks for the fun project!
Thanks friend! Appreciate you!
This is insane. People are so creative!
Thank you so much friend!
The graphics are stunning and the lights look awesome! Too bad it didn't stay watertight to keep using it to surf with. But it is a fun piece of art. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much friend means a lot
That simply took my breath away. Art doesn't often have a development phase where you iron out the unforeseen obstacles but this thing is spellbinding so I suggest consulting an engineer and making more of them, each one different, and selling them for maybe a hundred thousand dollars to well heeled surfers and art aficionados. I'm not kidding. Just be prepared for Chinese companies to be inspired and come out with something mass produced for much less money. That's OK though because yours will still be art and the authentic, original. Just do it. 😊
Wow, thank you so much for those words of encouragement. Really appreciate it. Also thank you so much for watching it. It really means a lot to me.
I totally agree with you!
Not a failure. It's absolutely beautiful!
Thank you friend🫶🏼

Yes! Thank you!
What are the panels you mounted to the ceiling called? Trying to figure out how to look them up/ask for them at the store!
Thin osb board
@@wood_brain Thank you!
Blow in insulation later. Cut a 4-inch hole in each wall bay, blow it in. Companies do this for retrofits. Yeah, you gotta hear it again: You did everything else right, and you shoulda’ put in the insulation. Great remodel though. Beautiful.
Good to know
Wait.. does your husband know how to do this? Looks like you’re doing it all. I’m absolutely so happy to see a woman doing this. Your father would be so proud of you. Was your husband surfing the whole time 😂.
Something like that! 🤣🫶🏼
