Hello everyone! I am Beyonce Frayle Caslib, A Filipina Student and a dreamer. This channel consists everything about me especially my talents like Painting, drawing, dancing, cooking, traveling, gardening, planting and lastly my favorite part is exploring the different tourists spot here in the Philippines. Most of my contents deals about my everyday lives. In additional, I also upload our school event and activities which I often join.
The Hanging Coffins And The Coffin at Lumiang Cave Sagada Philippines #beyoncefraylevlogs
THE PEOPLE OF SAGADA FOLLOW a unique burial ritual. The elderly carve their own coffins out of hollowed logs. If they are too weak or ill, their families prepare their coffins instead. The dead are placed inside their coffins (sometimes breaking their bones in the process of fitting them in), and the coffins are brought to a cave for burial. This is just one of the many ancient rituals and traditions that the people of the Cordillera Administrative Region (collectively known as Igorots) of Northern Philippines have preserved.
This ancient custom starts with a burial gathering led by the deceased’s family and relatives. The burial includes days of mourning, butchering of livestock, and preparing the body for entombment. Thereafter, a family member caries the body to the cave or cliff where the coffin is waiting. It is believed that carrying the dead would transfer luck, blessings, and talents to the family. Instead of being placed into the ground, the coffins are hung either inside the caves or on the face of the cliffs, near the hanging coffins of their ancestors. The Sagada people have been practicing such burials for over 2,000 years, and some of the coffins are well over a century old. Eventually the coffins deteriorate and fall from their precarious positions. Specifically, the coffins are suspended in the rocky cliffs of Sagada’s Echo Valley.
The Lumiang Burial Cave is probably the most visited burial site in Sagada primarily because it is usually bundled with the Sumaguing Cave Tour. Sumaguing Cave is arguably the town’s most popular tourist attraction and those who avail of the tour are given a free side trip to the Lumiang Cave. It is also the start point for the Cave Connection, the more challenging of the spelunking options you may choose from.
The cave is hidden several meters away from the road and one needs to go down a steep - and if you’re unlucky and it’s raining - slippery trail. There are parts that are very difficult to traverse but nowhere near dangerous. You just need to keep your balance by using your arms as your third and fourth legs. Some parts are rocky that you might want to watch your step, while some were littered with soft sticks that make music when stepped on.

An interesting mountain trip, beautiful views, caves. The coffins in the caves and hanging on the rocks look a bit macabre. And when the coffin falls apart, skeletons fall out.
