Welcome to Fly with the Guys!
Here we inspire new pilots and help them along the way. Join us on our flights out of Deer Valley Airport in Phoenix, Arizona AND follow us as we rebuild our 1939 J3 Cub that we've affectionately named the Red Rocket, probably the most hated J3 Cub on the internet...
I'm just a pilot sharing my experiences and what I've learned with the world. These videos are not meant to be replace primary instruction or to be advisory in any respect. They are for entertainment and informational purposes only.
Same goes with our rebuild project, I'm not a airplane mechanic, but I do work with one for a lot of the project.

Crazy Bright LED Beacon Install | AEROLEDS Sunbeacon II
My plane had no electrical or lights when I got it. @AeroLEDS decided to help us out with the lighting part. In this video we install the their Sunbeacon II to the back of our plane with some fancy 3D printed airplane parts. But since I'm a bit too large to fit in the back of my plane, I enlisted my 8 year old daughter to help with the install.

I'm going to be honest, installing the @GRTAvionics EIS 4000 was a lot of work. Every sensor, probe, and resistor has to be just right for the system to work properly, and I'm not even going to get started on the wiring. BUT, it's TOTALLY WORTH IT! Not only do I have critical engine information, but It coupled with my iLevel AP from @levilaviation. Now I can see Everything on a single screen. I...

Kudos to your son for his minecrafting skills! Very helpful video for newbies like me
It's best video comparation recoding methods. Thks!
main reason is CFI's milking the crap out of you.
Great stuff mate. I like the idea of getting the written test and student certificate out-of-the-way. Can that be done online? Is there an authoritative source for these written exams?
Damn that's heavy, I'm glad you were able to identify and solve the problem in time. Bet you'll never forget about flaps again after that.
One has to wonder if flying solo and not having the additional responsibility of having your children with you would have resulted in a quicker realization of what you missed. Hopefully, there is a way to factor in the possibility of additional stress when problems occur.
One thing that’s made it *stick* this time (aside from the fact that I have more money than I did in my twenties) is flying as often as I can. Things are going a lot faster, I’m getting better quicker and it’s going to cost less money. Ten years ago, when my instructor said I should be flying at least twice a week, I was like “?!?” But I was funding myself week to week, I didn’t have a lot of money and I was still in the early stages of my career when it required much more time and energy. The key to doing this as cheaply as possible is flying often and studying as much as humanly possible. Study your POH, maneuvering supplement and checklists in between lessons. I had already gone through my ground school material twice, took notes and revisited the difficult bits before showing up on day one at my new flight school. The more you can prepare yourself, the more often you do it, the more things sink into your neurons…you get further along faster.
It wouldn’t be as hard if the mics didn’t sound that bad and they didn’t talk so fast
you should have referred to Garmin Pilot along with fore flight
Shit schools with rip off service is a big one...
The fatal accident rate and trend in general aviation are not good. Many of those lost within the 28-30 GA fatalities per month in this country are as innocent as your children riding along with dad for an airplane ride. Many stories like yours end up tragically. I was lucky to live through my 63 year military and airline career. The first thing that should have occurred to you failing to climb should have been excess drag which would have led you to check flaps. Your shortcomings in that area suggest that you not adequately grounded in the areodynamics and conditions of flight. If I were you (am guessing you're a 750-1000 hour pilot) I would give serious consideration to getting out of general aviation altogether. Otherwise you face decades of close calls and possible a single, unfortunate tragedy that may cost the lives of those closest to you. Recognize that the FAA, the NTSB and the insurance companies are not being helpful in reversing the trend while the GA fleet is aging. Aircraft maintenance is not what it used to be. Think sbout getting out while you are ahead. The comments I expect to see in reply to my thoughts will most likely be short sighted and coming from people lacking decades of experience and without thousands of hours of pilot tirme. Take carecwhat you believe.
No offense dude but you are the spitting image of Jack Black in the 2015 goosebumps movie 😂 Edit: When i read my comment back it sounded quite mean but the video was very informative and thanks so much dude!!
Man, If only I could grow a beard like him...
Never thought I'd see flight training and minecraft be combined but hey, I'm not complaining.
My instructor is 260-280 an hour plus fuel is 40-50 how he want me to fly 2-3 times a week smh
What are you flying a multi engine?
Had no Idea Tom Papa was into aviation. Cool.
I still have more hair...
Great instructions; thank you for sharing on you tube.
Is there a way to achieve your PPL License for free?
this is so helpful! thank you for making this video.
Unless the fuel lines were still intact, I would say that that was not the cause of fuel starvation. Those leaf cutter bees made that after the crash and the lines were left open and accessible. Better keep looking for the cause!
Same happened to me on final. Wind switched from a gusting right quarter head to tail. Plane almost flipped and was heading for the trees. Full power, flaps up and had to climb asap. Scary as heck and will never forget the lesson. Thanks for sharing.
How to record audio from Bose a20 headset using my iPhone ( I want to also record the footage from iPhone so I want to get footage and all audio from iPhone. Is there any way to connect to the headset and plane to work and do this?
I had a bad landing in introductory flight 😅
I'm currently going through ground school and I hate it. The concepts I'm trying to study are just not getting into my head and it makes me feel like an idiot. And then it pushes me further down as I begin to doubt if I'll ever be able to put in any hours in flying.
Even flying night VFR on dark moonless lights over sparsely seattled rural country would REQUIRE the pilot to be able to control the plane entirely by referring to his instrument. And this fact has caused many accidents. I'd recommend about 20 hours of Night-Dual and another 20 hours of Instrument Training before flying at night under such conditions.
Dark night flying is about as close to IFR you're going to get if you live in an area like mine.
I did my first call yesterday, and I went blank. 😅😅
I had to dig to find this. Made it with my instructor. He called the push to talk button a brain disconnect button. czcams.com/video/1bAeMJY_asc/video.htmlsi=zs45wx1upLVMjcw0&t=187
@@flywiththeguys I actually saw that video. 🤣🤣🤣
Ran out of money after getting taken advantage of by a CFI who needed hours and really wasn’t a good instructor… 32 hours with 72 takeoffs and landings and still not even a mention of soloing. I quit for 9 months but always had it in my mind that I would return… now I’m back at it at a different school with much better CFIs.
I'm glad you got back with it. I really hate instructors like your first one there.
@@flywiththeguys he was definitely suspect. Had me practicing flying at different airports and doing cross country’s before soloing.
Now that is a story she will be telling her kids! The time she helped grandpa build his airplane 😎. We’ll done Carl!
Lolz that’s his daughter
He said it right. She'll tell her kids one day, which would be my grandkids. =)
Great video Carl. AeroLEDs are all over my Kitfox. Being seen is Life in aviation and especially in the airspace you will very soon be operating. Great choice of a family owned and operated company. 👍👍 All your sponsors have really stepped up for your project.
Thanks Steve! The next AeroLeds video I do will be with a secret project of theres. =)
I took a Discovery Flight recently and here is a question if you'd be kind to answer. The flight instructor was super nice, but the plane (172s Cessna with G1000) was beat up. The dash material was completely ripped off, right hand tire grooves had dry-rod. The tire on the right did not match the the tire on the left. The HDG on the dash was not working as it had a Red cross mark .The plane was was super dirty inside and out. And, they told me that they only had (1) 172S out of (5) in running order. Should I be concerned?
To me that would be a concern. They don't take pride in their aircraft enough to keep them clean and running. I can get past the dirty beat up plane, but 1/5 working is kinda a red flag for me.
@@flywiththeguys thank you!
Great video on aviation radio! I have used the Plane English once before and I would also strongly reccomend this app!! I will buy again when I am ready to train my brain for cross country radio!
Totally agree!
I guess you’ll need grand kids soon so you can keep maintaining your aircraft lighting
My oldest just graduated high school.... it could be sooner than I expect. YOu never know!
I just went blind!!!!!! Oh yea, what a CUTE lil A&P!!!!! I bet she is just like Rudder.... Getting away with absolute murder because of the cuteness factor..
She can. If my boys ever asked me to help them hid a body I would be all like "you better turn yourself into the police." If she came up to me with the same question, "Let me get the shovel and a tarp."
Awesome work ! your daughter is a true trooper . love that beacon too
Shes killing it. Actually got back in the other day to help me replace the mount. I used the wrong material. We're good now. SO glad I made it serviceable.
Good use of little hands! Also, whenever she see the plane she'll remember the quality time she spent helping dear old dad.
Very true!
As a American new private pilot in Australia, I find it very difficult to understand Australian ATC. I went as far as buying the ATC app to get used to hearing their jargon and how fast they talk, I still struggle, I am sure ATC gets pissed when I ask them to repeat instructions.
Typically, when you add power on a "Go Around", push forward as necessary, the AC instantly goes out of trim. For me, the flaps are my next "to do". For you, that was a "Free-=Be"..! You now have experience that many will never get and you'll likely be an expert at go-arounds, in any AC from here to eternity...:) Thanks for the experience!
LOL! This reminds me of bucking rivets inside the fuselage of my dad’s build when I was her age. (Disclaimer: I had hearing protection!)
I've been doing a bunch of that recently. It's not as fun as I was hoping it would be.
Won’t be long before she will be telling you to move over to the right seat
It's a tandem so she'll be telling me to get in the back. LOL
Bonus points for getting kids involved in aviation. Extra bonus points for putting a wrench in a girls' hands!
She'll help with anything in the plane. She climbed back there again recently and vacuumed the hole thing out.
Aww... Kelsey is adorable. Plane is looking so great! Can't wait to see when it is finished and flying. Hurry up!!! LOL
It's SO close. I'm really behind on videos. In fact, it'll probably be done this week.
@@flywiththeguys Looking forward to it!
The starter you installed is for a 122 tooth ring gear and the one you took off is for a 144 tooth. Did you install the wrong starter or is there womething else you're not telling us?
Someone along the way installed the wrong starter. It's a common problem, enough that Skytec makes a little tool to help you figure out which one you have. We actually made a little video on it here - czcams.com/video/ZRkCLNMPM9E/video.html
Our little Hero!!
I know right! I'm at odd with myself of what I'm going to do if I need to remove that mount and she's grown up!
👍✅ A little helping hand can save the day👏Tks for another video Carl
No problem 👍I still owe you a shirt BTW. I'm just been buried.
@@flywiththeguys And I owe you one too!
Hello, I just want to say thanks. My dad got his private pilot's license for almost $12,000, and I also wanted a private pilot's license. I decided to follow the same strategy shown in the video, even tho my dad was not confident, i managed to save over $5,000. I sold the plane for $1,000 less than the original cost, but I still saved a lot of money. I appreciate the knowledge.
NICE! Well done. Like I said, it can be risky but with the right plane it can really work out. Plane values are going down right now too so it's not as easy to pull this off as it was a few years ago. Back then you could have enough appreciation in 3 months to have it pay for your certificate!
what equipment do yall use to record during flight?
This should help - czcams.com/video/rbE7Lsc9kiY/video.html But I use the GoPro adapter mostly.
If could get a hold of that electric Pipistrel or buy it then you could save even more on fuel.
The fuels not bad. Maybe a 3rd or less of the cost of a wet rental.
I’m thinking of maybe getting my pilot license I just hope I learn everything without giving up
We have videos on the common reason, and TONS on how to get through it all. =) Check the channel page for help.
Does it count if I’m a writer researching so my MC - who’s supposed to be an amazing pilot - at least sounds like he knows what he’s doing? I’ve also had an off and on interest for my whole life, but was never allowed to fly due to having ADHD even though I’ve wanted to fly since I was 10. So I’m stuck with flight simulators. I want to learn, so that I can at least understand what’s going on. :)
You can still fly sport pilot. =) And any reason to learn ATC is a good reason. czcams.com/video/qS6SuxZMlf0/video.html
I found this video to be more confusing
Sorry for that. It's probably the most straight forward video out there. Let me know if you find something better. I'm ready to revamp this stuff!
