Ableton 12âs new features allow us to take a duration of rhythmic time and transform it into any even or odd grouping.
In this video I try two different ways of using this feature:
First approach - take a colorful vibey chord progression and divide it into a series of unpredictable rhythmic groupings.
Second approach - take three notes and assign each note a prime number as its rhythmic division.
Along the way weâll add kick drums, evolving hi hats, bass lines, ethereal pads, and lyrical synth melodies.
This technique is a great way to add surprise and chaos into any kind of music but works especially well with electronic styles such as House, Hip Hop, Techno, Drum and Bass, and beyond. You can hear aspects of these ideas in the music of artists like Fred Again, Floating Points, Four Tet, Ben Böhmer, Anjunadeep, Flying Lotus, Thundercat, Domi & JD Beck, Kaytranada, and many more.

Insane video. I love Mr.Hands
You can learn music theory in 20 minutes, please stop acting like itâs some obscure ancient knowledge, we donât need any more stigma around it than we already have for no reason. Instead of telling people to cut corners, make the content more accessible. Taking one concept and running with it for a year isnât helping anyone. Youâre not improving, youâre staying stagnant.
Maybe you have a very different idea of what âmusic theoryâ is than me but I donât believe you can learn it in 20 minutes. If by music theory you mean major and minors scales and their diatonic chords then sure, you could learn that in 20 minutes and it would help your music. To me at least, learning music theory is more like learning a language and those basic scales and chords are like spending 20 minutes with an Italian phrase book and then claiming you can speak Italian. I donât think Jaron was trying to convince people to stagnate, rather he was saying that you shouldnât feel like you need to learn every word, idiom, and grammatical rule of Italian before you try speaking it. Instead try to learn a single new concept at a time and spend time working into your practice and see how it fits with the concepts you already know well.
you are extrapolating quite a bit here, theres plenty of ways to think about what 'one thing' could mean here. if that one thing is a concept like say odd time signatures, you would not be stagnant for spending a year exploring that... you could do it for a life time and still discover something new every now and then. the main point however is to prioritize things you actually find interesting and actually get started doing something rather than feel overwhelmed and paralyzed. this creates a positive feedback loop that in most cases will lead to people realizing that it can be fun and exciting to learn more instead of using up your discipline learning about things that don't really directly relate to the music YOU like. and no you cannot learn the entirety of music theory in 20 minutes.
mmmh nice one!
Thanks man :). Actually helped in calming me down about stressing over the same thing. Music theory all at once feels like a lot. Cheers man! Bless ya đ
It takes twenty minutes to learn theory top to bottom, everything youâll ever use as a songwriter or musician. Youâre overcomplicating it.
Thanks man good tip @
This is great and true
Interesting experiment. Might try this soon. đ
Is this a tutorial or an ad?
Necesito la canciĂłn completa por favor!!!!!
Maestrazo you're the best

That swings man!

I was dissecting coldplay - clocks the other day and noticed the only difference in the drums for the entire track is in the cymbals, their intensity and rhythm.
Fire!
This is freeaaking awsome :0
I really appreciate that you didnât blindly commit to the polyrhythm just because it was different and because it was the thesis of the video. The exploration was interesting and worth the coverage even if itâs not the right sound on this one
pure soul!

Holy fuck boys thatâs a clean ass vibe
very nice
Sounds great
Love this, thanks!

has this song been released? Please do if it hasn't been!

This actually sounds not that sophisticated than you explain it. Mainly because of the 4/4 backbeat. But I really don't understand the 11 chord rhythm. Is it changing every three 16th notes?
that bass line is SICK !!!!!!
like your style
this is GODLY man. really aprecciate putting the chord names in the secondary dominant and tritonal sub part. this is textbook. the fat bass layered with synth sounds SICK as well and that dry asf drum kit oh my god
I wonder if something similar can be done in Cubase
why is this like, the best thing ever? :)
So I guess Ableton or yourself need to develop an arpeggiator with programmable time divisions per 1st note , 2nd note etc âŠthat could be great with velocity,poly-aftertouch /mpe đ
