If you've been plugging away at your game for a while now and you feel like it sucks or you can't even tell if it's fun anymore, you're not alone.
Trust me, it happens to the all of us, and it’s a crucial stage where many people feel like giving up. Even big names like Eric Barone, creator of Stardew Valley went through similar feelings.
The reality is, when you're too close to something, you lose perspective. You might feel overly critical or worry that your game is just a mess under the hood, even if players would actually enjoy it.
In this video, we discuss how you can power through and not only finish your game but find the joy in creating it again.
Remember, game development is a roller coaster, and the good feelings will come back. These negative feelings are temporary and there are many ways to get past them.

4 Ways to MOVE (Pros and Cons) in Unity
Ive actually been thinking about this a lot. Tutorial hell isn't just a thing for game developers but gamers too. I may do a detailed video on it but even myself in games we all go to tutorials first unstead of using our brains. Even when it comes to simple things like figuring out ui instead of uding oyr eyes.
hey man did you consider what Chris Zukowski says about genre? i was looking at your games on vginsights and they didnt generate much interest in wishlists. maybe its about genre that people are not interested in? what do you think about doing steam market research to have realistic goals and expectations?
love your content, keep it up!
Another quote that I love that fits the theme of the video is; Every defeat is psychological, except death. A year and a half after the video: 35k subscribers.
Thank you for the video! I plan to stream a one month challenge starting today. I know basically nothing, so I've been watching a few of your videos. I appreciate the positive thoughts and general attitude you have. Thanks again <3
Just do some drugs and play your game 😅
Hey could you play my game , Bounty Hunters is up on steam, its a mining bullet hell roguelike 🤙
My goal is to build up a CZcams audience through a gamedev vlog (devlog) -- Not even focused on selling it, will be focused on providing behind the scenes, about the process of making a game from start-to-finish - I guess my only question is how can I do a devlog without having some decent visuals first. I get it, make your game first, when you have visuals then do videos -- Got several things at play here 1) showing from start to finish (except the story I had come up with years before but even going to share the story), 2) people commenting on just start and worry about getting views and improving later, 3) I kind of need to start now, because just waiting means that I won't getting anything financially out of this until later (creatively is fine, but I want to support myself with this stuff to, and if I don't have anything out, it will still take a long time from when I do start posting, so if it takes me a year to get a decent number of views/subscribers, then it takes me a year from that initial video, which means if I'm posting 3 months later, then it's a year and 3 months to get views from it. A lot of variables here. Also deciding whether to unlist my previous attempt at a devlog.
The million memes being forced into the video are extremely distracting and not cool. Otherwise I appreciate the advice.
says its easy and here I am 3 hours later finding out that this sht aint working for me and just quit!
Nice tutorial!
If I hate my game, I wouldn't do it. If I hate doing something related to my game, seems it's because I'm tired or lazy.
I unfortunately have yet to find the fun in game design, but it probably revolves around my inability to understand code. It bothers me constantly that I cannot do what I want to do because I cannot comprehend programming even after trying for years to figure it out. Not sure how to resolve this either, which just makes it all the more painful mentally. I have technically made one game, but it doesn't reflect were I should be based on the amount of time I have spent trying to figure out code and it annoys me.
Did anyone run into the problem where the unity 2d urp template isn’t listed as an available template?
Thank you so much !
"They are not open source that means more stable" Debian developers get heartattacks...
This is why it’s so important to prototype the main game loop, the core mechanic, to test how fun it is. All this way before putting any time/effort into story, art, music, etc
"...I'm not sure if the length of this video is going to make people run for the hills or not" he says, to the type of nut jobs who sit through 10 hour tutorials. 😀
Only make a game if that game idea has been germinating in your mind it still feels good.
I would add "still feels good after 1 year". :)
I have two cameras. One follows the player on both the x and y axes, while the other only follows on the x axis. When transitioning from the camera that follows on both axes to the one that follows only on the x axis, the camera first moves downwards but then moves upwards. What could be the reason?
what is this 'time off' you speak of? Is it a game or IDE I haven't heard of? I don't understand.
This is just the motivation I need to keep working on my game. Thanks! Gotta say this feeling really hits you if you're building an online multiplayer game only because there has to be so much development made before you can even have something worth testing out, whereas local games can start testing with a player controller and some sprites.
First
Private variables don't need to start with an underscore. It isn't "proper naming convention". It's a relic. Do it if you want but don't call it "proper" as it's redundant.
This is the best video ever for any indie gamedev its just perfect for getting a framework in our minds and start doing work on our game
thanks for the video. i knew before that it's normal not to enjoy your own game. but to hear it from someone else is weirdly positive :D. keep up the good work
"Familiarity breeds contempt." I felt this way with the most-recent video on my alt channel where I'd been working on it for two weeks straight, wondering if it was any good, seeing every minor flaw, getting bored hearing the same points over and over again, hating myself for even making it, wondering if I should just pack it in and quit ... and three days after publishing, it went on to be my #1 video by a mile. This is why external feedback is so important because we often tend to be horrible judges of ourselves and our own work.
that is exactly how i'm feeling right now... but nope, i tried all your suggestions and still feeling down. its so weird how the vision of my game shifted from fun to boring in just 6 months.
Thank you, i needed this
But I love my game... can I still watch the video?
Of course not. :)
Bugs push you to get a better programer. Your art looks bad? Don't give up and you will be a good artist. You don't know how to make music/sounds? Try it out and you will eventually learn how to. So many young devs (me included) tried to jump on the top of the mountain in one go, but the true path is way longer and harder than you think. But if you don't give up everybody can do it. Never ever hide behind the excuse of "talent". Talent is just something your learned throughout your life and you can learn talent trust me.
meanwhile my special ctnl + c line: if you can't solve a bug make it has a feature
Thank you for this video. You really helping me out
this is good advice
The background noise (music) is way too loud. Can't watch it at the speed I want.
speed?
@@Ashiiru I'd like to watch it at 1.5x the normal speed. But the music is too loud and has strong beats so it is hard to listen. Can barely hear what Brandon is saying at normal speed.
For this situation, i normally will lower down the volume so it will be less anoy for me to listen to the video. Hope this helps!
dude doesn't even reply to comments, I doubt he even reads them.
That’s just like, your opinion, man. Or you’ve got something weird going on with your audio settings. The mix is fine and Brandon’s voice is perfectly clear. Sounds like you just don’t like hearing and sounds or music at all while someone is talking. I also watch videos at 1.5x and I have no issue at all hearing and understanding his voice at that speed.
My game and I (vids under channel ) have a love hate relationship. It loves to hate me and I hate that I love it.
"Make your game good" Well thank you 🙃
Nice Video
"Tutorial Hell" home sweet home 😅
Hi, I've seen JOB system when I started using Unity but i thought it was way too advance for me (i still do). All in all, Does this mean i cant implement JOB system into AI bots? or is there another way to optimize? Currently, I reach 20fps after spawning nearly 100 AI bots, equipped with Movement(patrol, chase many more), Combat etc. I get 15 fps with 350+ bots with their main AI script disabled. Would be greatly helpful if someone could lead me into a direction
Thanks for the amazing video! I just wanted to add something to the turnaround function using leantween If you change direction quickly and rapidly with it it will start becoming jerky and snappy which is very disorientating You could put a delay on turning around or invoke to fix it but that doesn't feel good I just added LeanTween.cancelAll() before the leantween and it fixed it
I hope your game end up as a great success.
I just started working with unity this week and this took me 2 attempts to follow. It was extremely frustrating at parts making me feel like this was his fault for moving too fast. I got stuck making the scoring work for hours until I figured out you have to add the pipe move script to the pipe prefab and not the individual pipes. But in the end I figured everything out, learned a lot about unity, and have some code to reference for other projects so I’d say it’s a solid tutorial.
Thanks for the great video. 👏🏻 I do hope you get rich from your game. 💥
CodeMonkey has an incredible channel! I'm so grateful for all the tutorials over the years Also, had no idea what he looked like until now
Great Advice! I will take a lot of it under consideration when I start working on a game release, Thank you!
Great video, man!
Great video! It's really helped me get a better view of what you've got into. When hobby developers say they want to quit their jobs to make their games full time, it's always about making the game and never those other activities.
How can i try this?
Lol yep tried to make my first ever 3d game Celestial Impact Invasion aimed for 1 year took a whole whopping 2 years quite literally double lmao
