5 COSTS of a Porsche 718 GTS 4.0 - How much my daily driver costs to run per year
5 Things about bills and running costs on my Porsche 718 Cayman GTS 4.0. Here is a video detailing the the 5 main costs that could be due per year on a top level Porsche 718.
The costs are insurance, road tax (uk), servicing, fuel and new tyres.
Insurance cost is personal to my situation based on the GTS cayman that I own. They can vary as can the road tax based on where you live. Servicing comes direct from a Porsche Dealer along with tyre prices based on the brand suitable for the car.
Fuel costs on this car are based mostly on my commuting drive as that is the main driving I do daily which amounts to mostly urban style figures. This is based on my use of the 718 and may vary.
My Porsche 718 cayman gts 4.0 is my own daily driver.

Big mistake. Second hand 992 closer to original cost these days😭
This thing will be a rattle box in 10 years.
2020 992 can't find a way to simply reset the trip mileage? Porsche keeps showing how to change on other models and suggesting it works on the 992/911 - it does not.
PSE is very irritating. Standard exhaust sounds better. The quad on 992.1 c2s looks a lot better too.
Hi. I have a 24 GTS. I’m in bc in Canada. Here the car is brutal. Mine was 112 k Canadian plus about 21 k in taxes and 6700 for plastic film and ceramic wax. About 141 total. Ins is 2000 , gas is 2.25 a liter and everything is very expensive. But I’m old , have some $ and just can’t get excited about the cost. Simply put , I’d rather suffer the horrible cost than sit at home and count the dollars I saved. If you worry , buy a tesla , I hear they are cheap to run. Every red light I get some person on a mission to show they can out accurate my GTS. I love it. Too funny
Thanks for the measurements! I'm picking up my 992.1 in Stuttgart at the end of August and need to know the luggage space. I went to the Porsche dealer here yesterday with a tape measure. Stuffy sales staff wouldn't even let me open the door on a 992.1 in their showroom. Your measurements is EXACTLY all I needed.
How is the chrome trim inside the cabin holding up? (Over the cup holders, in center console, and on doors) I ordered mine with the stock chrome trim versus the carbon fiber etc…
Turbo motor need the variable vein turbo IMO. Base is too unresponsive at lower RPMs. 4.0 GTS is great but expensive. On the used market there are deals on the turbo models but not so much on the 4.0 GTS
What you have posted is actually a demonstration of “Gliding Mode” not “Coasting Mode”. Coasting mode only works with the cruise control active and actually disengages the transmission allowing the engine to drop to idle while at speed. The 991 did not require cruise control to enable coasting mode so this is a change for the 992. No idea why Porsche changed it.
That’s exactly what does. Disengages to idle revs until it kicks back in. My 718 does exactly the same things. It’s was described as coasting mode in the 992 user manual through the app when I owned the car. That is was how I found out how to do it.
The best I can tell from comments online what you are describing as gliding mode is the same as coasting mode by function. I have no cruise control on my 718 PDK or my my previous 992 PDK. As long as you are not in sport/sport + coasting mode works the same on both cars.
@@Get10YardsHmm. I rewatched your video and you are probably correct. I’ll try it. My 991.2 went into coasting mode by just lifting off of the accelerator, so I thought there might be a problem with the 992. Now it looks like it is working as Porsche designed it. I don’t understand why they added manual intervention to initiate coasting. The only thing I can think of is there are states, Colorado, where coasting is illegal so Porsche made it a manual process. Thanks for the video.
You can’t eliminate the two outside dials from the steering wheel setting.
Can I somehow remove the two outer gauges?
Can someone please explain me (@3:33) what does it actually mean to „clear the value“? What does actually happen to final payment if I don’t plan to purchase? Someone explain to me please
You either need to make the final payment to purchase the vehicle or you give it back to the finance company and you give up any value left in the car. So you could either pay the payment in full, find a way to refinance with the existing lender/new lender or you could do a deal to trade the car for another one before your deal ends. The last one would be similar to trading in you old phone for a new contract where they give you any value in your old phone towards the new contract.
A really nice red! Kind of a burnt brown~ reddish-brown.
What about the rear wiper? It's really useful but does it destroy the whole look?
Im not a fan of it. I didn’t order it. It doesnt cause that much of an issue not being there. The ones I have seen with one visually don’t look right. But that’s just my opinion.
@@Get10Yards Thanks, I must admit that it doesn't look right.
Your tyre costs were similar to mine (although I changed to Michelin PS4S), insurance also was similar. I haven’t had to have a big service yet though! 😬
What tyres came on yours? Did you swap based on price or just what you could get?
Pirelli P zeros came on the car. They were fine overall but I switched to Michelin as they also have a great reputation and I previously had them on my GR Yaris and they were mighty on that thing! Price was about the same
Thanks for watching! If you would like to see the costs video covering the same items on a Porsche 992 Carrera 2 you can find that video here czcams.com/video/wyhLOI0ld8E/video.html
Really helpful video! Always a big fan on the 718 GTS 4.0 myself. I actually have a video going out on my channel tomorrow afternoon with an owner of a 718 Cayman GT4 sharing his ownership of the car. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on that video if you do get the chance to check it out with a bit of a comparison to your GT4 4.0. Keep up the great content 👍👍
Cheers Sam! Thanks for the heads up I’ll look out for it.
The central large physical tachometer is better to have if you are driving a manual car. If Porsche was to get rid of the manual transmission they could replace it with a smaller all digital tac.
They don´t make it anymore :(
Great video and info 👌👌👌👌
Great advice 👍👍👍
Hello great insight. I need some advice please, I’m looking to get a new car (used version) tempted by a 911 and in particular a 992. Currently looking at a car around 2019-20 to get cheapest price. Would you recommend buying one now? Also how would you best advise going about purchasing in terms of paying for it. Finance? Bank loan? Thanks
To be honest I am not the best person to ask about that. But from what I am seeing with my 718 GTS at the moment second hand it may still be too early. They are still charging high prices used but paying far less on buying back. Other people on CZcams that analyse the used market expected the used market to drop. So I am unsure if will go further or not, the 911 is going hybrid so no idea how that will affect older cars. If you are going to keep it for a long time then I’m not sure market prices dropping would be a huge issue for you. Only if you wanted to keep it a year or two then move on. In terms of finance dealers if you go to Porsche don’t do favourable rates so you may be better off getting finance through a bank or broker for lower interest rates. But check it out with the dealer and check the market. The comparison sites as a start will give you a good indication on the percentage available from lenders. But special high end car finance brokers may be worth a call.
@@Get10Yards so in terms of your 992 that you had, any chance I could chat to you regarding finance routes and your advice on the car. Have you got an email I can get you on? Thanks
I never explored finance outside of the VW offered new car option at the dealer. So unfortunately I cant really point you to anything else. What I have suggested is just the options I would look at myself if I were to look down the used route. In terms of the car buying it used I would just look for something with the most included options that were paid for at the time. Depreciation on cars usually follows the base value of the car not it’s paid extras. So my only thoughts I could offer there is don’t over pay for a lower additional optioned car. Unfortunately my cars have always been new, so I don’t have a lot of experience finding and buying used.
@@Get10Yards so in terms of buying new, what did you give as a deposit and what were your monthlies?
I put these all on videos actually you can find them on the finance play lists. Gives all the figures for both finance on the 718 and 992 in different videos
Are there any anchor points in the back seat area to attach bungee cords? Like if you put the back part down and you put a cooler or some other bag in there can you hold them in place with bungees?
Not that I remember. I think they just fold down and become a shelf for extra storage.
WOW! A lot wrong already with 4K only on the vehicle. I’m very surprised especially with the German engineering pride thing Porsche has too. Just shows me that nothing is perfect but a car of that expense should wait to have more miles on it to start the rattling, noise and other things going wrong with it.
Looking forward to more videos in the new year!
Don’t think that would save fuel as it’s a very short distance where the engine is at tick-over burning a small amount of fuel. In gear on the overrun the engine is burning no fuel whatsoever as the momentum of the car is turning the engine over!! The only way this coasting mode would save fuel is on a long slight decline where the lack of resistance from the engine would allow the car to maintain momentum longer versus the overrun where you would eventually have to use the gas to maintain speed.
I use it mostly going down hills or coming to a stop at red lights. It does move the average mpg on the display up if used but not so much you would notice. Only issue is that you loose engine breaking so if you are going down hill doing it you have to gently ride the break to combat the speed. If you brake too hard it kicks back out and drops a gear bringing the engine revs back. I try my best to use on familiar roads on the commute to help the mpg where i can.
Hey Steve regarding your Cayman GTS, keep an eye on the oil pressure. One of our club members had his oil pump fail and had to get the engine replaced under warranty. Take care and Happy Holidays.
Thanks for the heads up Gilbert! I will take a look and see if its right
this looks miles better than the sports one.
Thanks mate 👍
Hey Steve. Good hearing from you. The weight in the rear does wear the tires faster. That was true with my Cayman S and my current 911. Why the oil consumption? I never had that issue with my cars. I always followed the break in instructions and tried not to drive it short distances. Most of my driving is around 28 miles round trip and every month the club has a drive of over 100 miles. All the best. Cheers.
Really not sure on the oil. Others said the same in the comments. I didn’t have to put any oil in the 992 at all from what I remember and I did very similar driving although maybe a few more longer drives. Not sure if it’s just that 4.0 engine and it’s needs but it’s a first for me also.
That is very low tyre usage. Worth pointing out to anyone driving enthusiastically, you'll get through tyres far quicker than that. And I am not remotely talking about drifting or anything silly like that. I get through rears in 6-8k miles in my Cayman, 10k miles ish for the fronts.
Seatbelt - Torx bolt. Undo it, turn around, retighten. It'll take you 5 minutes.
It would be my luck that I’d touch it and I wouldn’t get it to go back together for some reason. Then it’s going to cost me. Rather Porsche sorted it under warranty.
Helpful video, i’m six months into ownership of a GT Silver GTS with 3,200 miles. Interesting point on build quality vs the 992, not heard that before but i so also get that sense of quality in depth in the cayman. I did have an issue with a rattling cargo cover on the rear hatch but managed to sort this with rubber washers into which the two screws sit. Aside from that no issues and about 2/3 litre of oil. I’m trying not to count miles too much though and i thoroughly enjoy each drive, even looking forward to the biweekly commute. Thanks for the update
Thanks for telling me about the washers. That wasn’t something I tried on the first one I had. If it starts doing it on this one I’ll give that a go. I always put the noise down to the cover ribs vibrating on the rougher roads.
Which one is better? I’m so close on buying a Cayman but mannn should I not rather get a 911? I don’t knowwwwww!
It’s a hard question to answer that one unless you have driven both. They feel different but I suppose it also depends which shape you prefer. Running cost wise if you get similar size engines it’s about the same from my experience give or take a little.
oh and with the belt can you just untwist the belt at the point of the buckle?
No its coming out flat from the exit point which means its not twisted inside. So if i fold it and flip it through the buckle it will still be twisted at the bottom and the buckle will be pointed the wrong way. If i could spin the mental plate round 360 it would fix the issue but i cant it wont do it
can see that now, just sketched it out!@@Get10Yards
My belt had a twist also and the dealer replaced the entire assembly under warranty.
Im going to see if I can get it sorted.
Thorough well presented video as always - doesn't watching the mileage and limiting your use somewhat curb your enjoyment though?!
Trying to limit my mileage on the boring commute to work so that the fun miles i put on the car aren’t really adding more the car. I was just working it out one day on the drive home and realised it wasnt saving me any time but adding 5 miles each way. So decided to try and keep it down.
Ah, I understand that, great motor and enjoy your analytical approach to the financial considerations around ownership - wish I had your clarity of thought!!@@Get10Yards
Got my GTS on 73 plate beginning of September. So far done 1500 miles with no issues and oil level perfect. My work commute is only 3 miles each way so car does not even get up to temperature ..might use it once a week outside of weekend. But that makes jumping in on Saturday or Sunday feel special and exactly why I bought it.
My Boxster GTS 4.0 is nearly a year old, done 15000kms spirited driving and have used 1.5 ltrs of oil.
My first 3500 miles on this same car I burned about a 3/4 quart of oil but I was driving it pretty hard in hot summer months after break in miles.
I was getting disappointed till i learnt from this video you can change the appearance and get that analogue speedo.I love the 5 gauge cluster of the Porsche.
Well done !
Found your 992 video searching for long term reviews. Picked up a ‘22 yesterday w 8K miles on it and I’ve done 500 miles in the last 24 hours. 😂. 4K miles in a year and calling it a daily? I’d buy something much cheaper :)
I was working very close to my house. My 718 GTS is up to 6k in a year now. Plus I took that 992 March 2020 which meant I was locked down a lot with covid shut downs in the first year. It wasn’t a great time to get a brand new car.
The internals are not even the same I believe.
No they aren’t that was the point of the video. Do you need it.
I didn’t hear the difference between the two engines ( cylinder size etc.) APR has warranty on their tunes. However, in the U.S. you have to take it to get tuned. When looking for one for an Audi RS3 , I would of had to take it to the VW dealer.. Which has me wondering if it will void factory warranty since it has to go to VW to install it, or if it’s allowed.. Either way, their site does say warranty is covered . Just don’t know if it’s from them or the factory.
No idea to be honest. My understanding is that any changes from factory preset voids the warranty on a new vehicle. So that would include the modification of the ECU. But I could be wrong. I wouldn’t have thought a third party would give you their own warranty over parts just anything they have performed. If it was done by a dealer of any type I am not sure if that changes anything.
@@Get10Yards Found out that APR does warranty for the STAGE PLUS tune. But yes, it does void warranty from factory.
Bro thanks for the video You have a button sport exhaust
Not on the c2 when I ordered it. The sports exhaust was extra cost in the UK I didn’t buy it.
Hello I also have a gts 4.0 the used prices have purely gone down due to interest rates. The prices won’t go down any more then this our cars will be still the same price in 2 years second hand. Interest rates wi start coming down end of this year. Next inflation date 20th September uk. 2 more Bank of England meetings this year. Keep your eyes peeled on interest rates and inflation as that affects our cars value
I'd go for the basic color BLACK
I would look at the transactions a little differently, the current GTS 4.0 cost you c£68K and I believe even in this market you'd sell that at £65K, it may take a little time as it is so lightly specified, so that would be one transaction, and the loss is c£3K. What you do then is another transaction and the profit/loss can only be calculated once that has gone through the complete lifecycle. I do believe the market will bounce back, this is just a lull in times of high interest and a cost of living crisis, I feel the depreciation over the next couple of years will be close to nil. Good luck and look forward to hearing how this pans out.
I keep head the used Porsche market is going to crack, I’m sure you’ve seen the CZcams videos? 2024 will be a used car killer.
Think it will be interesting ongoing. Its a supply and demand situation. Much like the housing market and the finance situation there. Keeping an eye on the value of mine as it gets closer to the middle of the agreement.
Mate, your computation is a bit off. The dealer doesn't quote your trade with optional equipment. They provide the trade estimate based on the standard equipment of the model. The options are simply that; options you've chosen to add to the automobile.
Yes they are but I do not see where that makes me off. The trade in value is whatever I am offered based on demand at the time whether it’s just based on the standard equipment or not. My car actually only has options added that now are standard equipment a year later other than the PDK gearbox. So the much higher standard equipment car price now matches my optioned car much closer.
I have commented on your previous posts and asked if you have had any regrets not ordering a 911 rather than the GT4. I have traded my 911 C2 (992-2020) back to Porsche Newcastle and ordered a 911T. It made sense and I did expect a long lead in time, however, we are talking Dec 23/Jan 24 delivery. I am having to finance the same amount as I did when I bought in 2020, even though the replacement is £16/17k more at £114k. Assuming that there is not a price hike. I think my point is that we never gain, but they are lovely cars and consider had we/I bought a beama or merc.
Don’t regret it but I sometimes wonder if I should have held onto it. Although I do really enjoy the 4.0 in this GTS. I don’t think I’d be able to step back up to the 992 if I bought a new one now at the increased price. So the decision is if I hold onto this one for the remaining 2 years. Hopefully no more increases as that was a big revalue on all the models! Hope your replacement comes on time Kevan. You are right though. I’ve had a few new model BMW’s and I feel the same way.
Porsche prices have definitely increased. Porsche said they wanted to make more money and they are. I decided to pass on a new Carrera S and order a new BMW M2 instead. That way I can keep my 2017 Carrera and have money left over. Hope all is well. Cheers. 😎
Greetings, can you share why you sold back your 992? I am in the same predicament. I have had my 992 S for over a year. It looks great but for some strange reason not so much urge to drive it. I was wondering if anyone else had the same feelings. Thanks
@@jhan4915 I am out of the country for several months and wanted to place an order for a new 992. When we discussed options, it made financial sense to sell rather than storing the car.I miss it at the moment.
@@jhan4915 I sold mine purely because it was at that weird market time when you couldn't get new cars and at 18 months old I got back what I paid new for it. So I cashed in and decided to order the 718 GTS. Had that not been the situation I likely would have kept the 992 until the end of the finance. Driving wise I do prefer the 718 as I had a 2.0 before the 992 but I still miss the shape. Wasn't as much of a fan of the inside of the 992 though if I am being honest. I don't think I will end up in another one but never say never.
